Ughh! Turkish Investment Copes With The Global Crisis
2008-09-19 12:38:00 With nothing good to talk about these days on the global front, the question needs to be asked, "Who are going to be the last ones standing?" Lehman bankrupt, Merrill Lynch helped out by Bank of America, Morgan Stanley and WAMU looking for buyers, the US bailouts of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae and now AIG - these past weeks have left everyone in awe of the historical proportions. Historic in the sense that the government is stepping in and stewarding companies - historic in the sense that the government has put a hold on all short selling - historic in the sense that people are drawing comparisons and even mentioning the Great Depression! You have to ask yourself, when was the last time any of this happened before? Next we need to ask, "Who is to blame?" Is it the simple prudent investor who couldn't pay his morgage? Is it the lender who kept adding the tightly-wound-up deals to the portfolio? Is it the leveraging of that risk to others that maintained the confidence? Somewhere...

Turkish Fort
2008-07-17 11:23:00 Location - Atlantic : 35 57 N / 028 26 W Now that we have left Europe and Asia behind, I wanted to go back to the main countries that I passed through before coming over here. The one with the best views was of course Turkey with the amazing skyline of Istanbul and the neighboring countryside. This picture is of a fort about five miles north of Istanbul along the straits. Unlike the Indian forts, these forts have a very open feel to them and sometimes go curving into themselves. I can only assume that the purpose of that would be to funnel the attacking army into places where they could be plummeted by rocks, arrows and other such items.
The Turkish Male and the Subservient Woman
2008-07-05 16:34:00 The Mosque Across the RoadAs I sit here in Turkey waiting for my ship to come in, I am asking myself some startling questions! I don?t normally get all ?deep? about religion but sitting here in Turkey it crops up again and again!Last night for example I did not close my window so at four thirty I was violently woken up by a call-to-prayer from the mosque across the road! I didn?t go but I must admit, even with the window closed and the pillow over my head it was hard not to go rushing across to stick my bum in the air! Earlier I had been flicking through the channels of the television in my hotel room whilst sipping a strange mixture of Burgaz Raki (In Turkey, Raki is the unofficial 'national drink') and orange juice when a channel popped up with a skinny white-haired German pounding away at the behind of a maid in some motel in Atlanta ? a full blue movie to say the least! I didn?t stay to watch, to see if the maid got caught or if the manager joined in as punishment, but it all ...
Turkish Court Rules In Favor Of Secularism, Modernity And Feminism
2008-06-10 13:56:00 Turkey’s Constitutional Court overturned one of the ruling AK party’s central “reforms†– an amendment to the Turkish constitution that reintroduced Islamic headscarves in public universities, undermining decades of secularism in this Muslim country that wants to join the European Union. The opposition CHP party sued to block the amendment, and the court sided with ...

Turkish property prices 'could carry on rising'
2008-06-06 02:00:00 People thinking of buying property in Turkey could be making a good investment choice, it has been suggested. With the UK property market suffering a hangover from the credit crunch, some investors are looking overseas for opportunities to profit. Ian Jones of fund manager Cordea Savills believes one place worth investigating is Turkey, where a number of factors are combining to drive prices up, despite the economy starting to slow. "This is a country of some 70 million people with half of the population under 30 and with an average annual population growth of about one per cent," he told Reuters. Property prices have grown rapidly in some parts of Turkey in recent times and one newspaper recently reported that homes in the area surrounding the resort of Bodrum are prohibitively expensive for locals. However, the Turkish Daily News also pointed out that prices were still at a low enough level to attract interest from holiday home buyers and investors from overseas.
Court Annuls Turkish Scarf Reform and the Trial of the AKP
2008-06-06 01:09:00 BBC: Court annuls Turkish scarf reformBackground1918: The Ottoman Empire had crumbled. In its place was a much smaller, much weaker, much poorer state called ?Turkey?. The nation was in chaos. Soon, a strong leader emerged: Ataturk. Cut through the crap and you will find Ataturk pushed through many reforms that westernized Turkey and made the country probably the most successful in the region, but most importantly for us, took Islam out of public life. The caliphate was ended, women were given more rights, and Ataturk even moved the Muslim holy day from Friday to Sunday. In recent years, there has been a burst of political Islam in Turkey. The ruling AK Party is relatively conservative and religious, but no where near the extent as seen in Saudi Arabia, Iran or Iraq. One of the more controversial laws passed under the AK Party was a law that eased the ban on headscarves being worn by women at universities. The government argued that a headscarf ban stops many girls being educated; it...

Turkish resorts offer investment potential
2008-05-30 02:00:00 Overseas property buyers have been encouraged to consider potential investment opportunities in Turkey. According to Dominic Whiting, editor of Buying in Turkey, new flights to the popular holiday resort of Dalaman have recently been launched by easyJet. This means that the region is likely to see a surge in visitor numbers over the next few months, which in turn will push up demand for rental accommodation. As a result, owners of property in Dalaman could be well-placed to earn a profit from the rental yields. Speaking to Homes Worldwide, Mr Whiting said: "The start of low-cost flights into the Turkish resort will be a huge boost to the fledgling holiday lettings market." He added that choosing the right location for a property is very important, particularly if they plan to let it out to holidaymakers. This comes after John Bevan, managing director of Lastminute.com, told the Daily Mail that Turkey has displaced countries such as Spain and France in terms of the nu...

Turkish Prime Minister Defends Actions Towards Court
2008-05-26 08:27:00 Prime Minister Recep Erdogan defended the actions of his Justice and Development Party(AKP in the present conflict with the Constitutional Court of Turkey. He told women delegates to the AKP that his party is not the one responsible for the current crisis over threats by the Constitutional Court to declare the AKP leaders as violating the constitution by their efforts to impose Muslim laws upon the secular nation. Erdogan sharply denied there was any such attempt, and he emphasized his belief in separation of powers and his respect for the “principle of the supremacy of law which applies to everyone.” A court statement released last week charged the Erdogan government of attempting to stack the court system with judges who support their points of view. It also charged his administration is endeavoring to influence the current closure case dealing which seeks to close down the AKP. A spokesperson had responded to the court statement by claiming the behavior of the courts ...

2008-05-20 00:09:00 Doug Farah and I talked about his post on Hezbollah and clarified that Hezbollah might be the premier non-state terrorist threat. After all, Hezbollah's support and the extent of its direction from the current Iranian regime is massive. Two years ago, I wrote here about my discussions with a senior Western intelligence service official, who estimated Iran's direct financial support to Hezbollah at $100 million, and that was when oil was less than half of the current price. Turkish Grand Prix: Massa, imperator of Istanbul.
2008-05-11 15:41:00 The fifth leg of the Formula One championship was run today in Istanbul and Felipe Massa registered his third consecutive pole-victory combination on this circuit.A very exciting race was offered to racing fans today mainly because the configuration of the circuit allows many overtaking chances to the pilots. We saw many position changes and battle throughout the field today.Starting from the third position on the grid, Lewis Hamilton was on a three pit stops strategy while the Ferrari cars were on a two stop strategy. Being lighter than his opponents, Hamilton managed to overtake Felipe Massa before his first stop.In the end, McLaren's strategy allowed the british driver to gain one position overall. The other McLaren driver, Heikki Kovalainen, experienced a front tire puncture after a contact with Kimi Raikkonen's car during the start. The puncture costed Kovalainen dearly as he did not score any points today as he finished in 12th position. But nobody managed to keep Felipe Mass...
