Turmeric may help with heart disease.
2008-03-29 15:50:00
Toronto animal study showed "dramatic" results. The spice that gives the kick to many Indian curry dishes might also help prevent the ravages of heart failure, a surprising new Canadian animal study has concluded. This spice is also found in a synergistic combination with Immunotec's Omega 3 daily supplement.Researchers at Toronto's University Health Network found that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, both prevents and dramatically reverses enlargement of the heart in mice.Enlarged hearts can lead to cardiac failure, a common and often fatal condition where the organ is unable to pump enough blood to keep the body functioning properly. If similar results were one day duplicated in humans, the widely available spice could repair heart damage in a way no drug is able to do now, say researchers behind the study, to be published Friday in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Curcumin has the added benefit of causing virtually no toxic side effects in even relatively large...

Turmeric Extract, The Next Miracle Antioxidant? Or Is Curcumin All It's Hyp
2008-02-11 18:07:00
By: Samantha Rangen The turmeric root has been used traditionally in Ayervedic medicine and other Eastern folk remedies. Due to differences in certain diseases between Indian and Western populations, interest was raised in the scientific and medical communities regarding the possible pharmacological activity of turmeric. Turmeric is the yellow spice used to color curry powder. Many ethnic groups the world round use it for adding color to cooked or pickled foods. When turmeric was examined in a laboratory, it was found that the active components were certain chemical compounds, known as curcuminoids. The major curcuminoids are curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. They are commonly referred to generally as curcumin, and are available commercially now as purified extracts of the turmeric root. In the scientific literature there is a good deal of evidence for the antioxidant activity of curcumin. Curcumin has been shown in research to powerfully scavenge fre...
Lasun Parathas (Garlicky Parathas)
2008-01-26 07:12:00
Garlic is part of the onion family and is packed with antibiotic and antifungal properties, Vitamin B, minerals, and flavanoids! It is believed to have several health benefits and is believed to help prevent heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cancer, and even regulate blood sugar levels.Garlic is used extensively in Indian foods. Its sharp, pungent taste adds much flavour and richness to vegetables, lentils, and curries. It is sometimes though rarely incorporated in Indian breads, and I have often wondered why this is the case. I love different kinds of rotis and parathas and am always experimenting with them. Here's my recipe of Lasun Parathas for Think Spice... Turmeric

Turmeric is botanically known as Curcuma longa, derived from the old Arabic name for the kurkum plant we know better as saffron. Yet this spice is a member of the ginger family and unrelated to saffron. Like ginger, it is the root of the turmeric plant that is used as a spice, usually in a dried form. However, in some areas of the Far East, the fresh turmeric root is used and stored much like ginger. The root is generally peeled to expose its bright yellow flesh, then boiled, dried, and ground into a powder. Turmeric gives ball-park yellow mustard its bright color, is a prime ingredient in Worcestershire sauce, and is also used to color other foods such as butter, cheese, and fruit drinks. It is a favorite in Middle East and Asian foods and spice blends such as curry.Turmeric contains curcumin, a proven anti-allergenic. Especially good for the skin and for enhancing resistance to skin allergies. It also helps support healthy liver function, which aids assimilation and energy levels. ...

Turmeric Lower Cholesterol
2007-06-06 12:52:00
The research on turmeric so far appears to be very favorable. It appears that turmeric mainly affects LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) and triglyceride levels. One study conducted on rabbits fed a high-fat diet showed that turmeric appeared to lower LDL cholesterol levels and triglycerides, as well as preventing LDL from being oxidized. Oxidized LDL has been shown to greatly accelerate the formation of atherosclerosis. The cholesterol lowering effects of turmeric have remained consistent in these studies. In fact, one study even concluded that LDL cholesterol was lowered anywhere between one-half and one-third of those subjects consuming turmeric in comparison to those not receiving it.Although this information appears promising, there is one hitch: there are hardly any studies that have looked at the ability or turmeric to lower cholesterol levels in humans. Since it does work in other animals, it may also work in humans. However, the dosage and function of turmeric in hu...
