New ESL Teacher Starting Private Tutoring
2008-01-29 06:19:00
Andrea from the U.S. writes:Hello! I am a college student majoring in TESOL. I'd like to do private tutoring out of my home after I graduate in December. Do you have any good advice for someone who is interested in doing this? I've been doing an internship in a high school and will be going overseas for student teaching in the summer. I've found I am better at one-on-one instruction. Anyway, I'll be visiting this site more often, as it seems very helpful!Hi Andrea,I'm not sure if you were looking at ESL Tutor or Teaching ESL to Adults . On the ESL Tutor site, you can look at the list or Article Topics for things like "self-employment" or "meeting locations," etc. Incidentally, I don't recommend teaching out of your home; too many horror stories. Check out the Article Topics list and if you have any specific questions, please feel free to write again.Good luck,Debra

Is Online Tutoring a Worthy Investment?
2008-01-05 19:23:00
I've talked about how much I enjoy being a tutor online. But is it a worthy investment from the student's perspective? As of right now the largest portion of the client base connects through Live Homework Help. Many public libraries pay for the service then allow students to log in through their website. Off the top of my head its available throughout Alabama, Brooklyn, and San Diego. Some school districts like Richardson ISD in Dallas, Texas offer students up to 300 free minutes for the semester. These services are obviously a great deal. From my experience the students love it. They log in when they are stuck on a homework problem, studying for a test, or even just to clarify concepts. The one thing I strongly suggest is checking your local library for the free service. If you have access to the free service, there is no question. It's worth it! As a tutor, I'm probably biased. As a tutor, I hear tons of positive feedback from the students. Here is a little bit of bac...

Goodbye to ESL Tutoring for 2007
2008-01-01 02:37:00
I had my last adult ESL student of the year today. What a dedicated student to want to meet on New Year's Eve!Actually, all the students I've had this year have shown great dedication on their journeys to become better English language speakers. This is one of the great things about working with adult ESL students; they are usually there because they want to be. I said goodbye to some students with whom I had worked over a year (and I still miss them!) and said hello to a lot of new students.ESL tutoring, for me, has been one of the more rewarding opportunities I've had over the years. As a private ESL tutor, I don't have the advantages of things like sick leave or health care benefits, but I do have the opportunity every day to interact with wonderful people, and to travel vicariously and cheaply!I look forward to another year of working with dedicated and interesting English language learners.Goodbye 2007.--end--

Tutoring, A Real Money Maker?
2007-12-14 11:57:00
This is a question that really bugged my brains since this early morning because my younger brother is up for a tutor session with a local neighbor of ours and im wondering how much she is making per week with this work. She also offers writing term papers for students for real big bucks. Just how much is she making? On the internet's point of view, we have several sites that offer essay custom for students. Is this really happening?! Well yes! With the advent of the advanced technology that the internet offers, custom research paper is not very hard to find online. One can become an essay writer without anybody knowing that he paid somebody online to do it for him. From this, we can say that there are really alot of ways to make money and you just have to be resourceful enough to use your skills to monetize them. Think of it as blog monetizing. ;)
Tutoring pt.2

I want to start by bragging showing off these amazing results coming from my site meter. Guys, this is intense, I really had no clue it was going like this. Yesterday, I beat my all time record, I had over 190 individual clicks & 250 visits. Damn, that's a whole lotta people! As you can see, it's been a growth over the past few weeks but really took off this week. Hopefully it'll stay!Needless to say, I was surprise, and it brought up a wave of good energy upon me, especially after the disastrous Accouting tutorials. It made me realize how little I know and how much I have to learn in such a short period of time. Exam is Friday, but I work every other day.... damn! Lol, does someone hear the 24hour Second Cup screaming my name & intense cramming? Hehe, well I should be fine, it's all practice and I've been doing the Online Assignments all semester, so I still have a small base.Anyways, let's get to the goss.Let's start with today's big story, the Spice Girl...

Oh dear lord!I went reviewing at Tim Hortons all the stuff the tutor showed me today just to make sure I understood everything and let me tell you, Managerial Accounting is very hard. There's so many income/balance sheets, and so many little exceptions, you gotta read your problems at least 3 times each just to make sure not to have forgotten anything. Then I make tons of calculating mistakes, which makes the whole thing better :p Well, if you look on the good side, I have up until Friday to get my shit together and learn!Ok enough about me, let's do the goss.Let's start with today's big news, Oprah is publicly endorsing Barack Obama, showing up at one of his rallies on stage!“There are times that I even worry about what happens to our country,” Momma O said at a town hall in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday. “That is why for the very first time in my life I feel compelled to stand up and speak out for the man who I believe has a new vision for America.” This is the first...

CELTA or TESOL for Private Tutoring
2007-10-08 04:26:00
Really, anyone can call themselves an ESL tutor or teacher and find private clients. There are no licensing requirements (that I'm aware of) as there are, for example, lawyers. Of course, it is certainly a better selling point to actually have some training in teaching ESL.One way to get training to teach ESL to adults or to children is to take a certification course. When you start to look into certification courses, you find that there are two main certifications: CELTA and TESOL.CELTA stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. TESOL stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Possession of either of these certificates shows that the ESL teacher has been through a certificate training program and has been taught the necessary "tools" to teach English. So which certificate is right for you? Personally, I have a TESOL certificate. Although I had the option of studying for either certificate, I chose the TESOL because that was the ESOL certificate ...
