Tweens Hate Blooooogles? Fook!

Fook! Seems the little’ens aren’t diggin’ my bloooogle and others like it [Website - TheLostGirl?s Blog]. According to The NY TImes, tweens are big social networkers, but largely ignore blogs. This flies in the face of the logic I used to establish this blog…. seems the... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]
Sex, Sexism, and Tweens
2008-05-15 06:00:00
It's always interesting to me when I find myself agreeing with a person/group/organization that I would ordinarily be at total odds with.  Take, for example, this article about "Sexualizing Tweens for Profit" on a website that is definitely not on the same page as I am, politically speaking.  I mean, right there in the side column is an article criticizing Ironman for being retrograde and (I assume) sexist.  (Because "retrograde" is one of those words that people use to criticize something popular as being sexist without coming off as a big wet blanket.  Also, I should add that Ironman was a lot of fun, and that I didn't notice anything particularly sexist about it.  Of course, I also don't tend to look for those things, nor do I have a chip on my shoulder about gender roles in entertainment.)  Anyway, as I was saying, despite my political differences with the site, I do applaud the interview's mention of why the trend impacts boys as well as girls:...

This Just In....Teens Are Moody and Tweens Swear!46199740
2008-02-26 21:31:00
From the files of tell me something I don't already know , comes this study. The headline is sure to catch the attention of every parent of a teen, or tween for that matter: Teen Brain May Be Wired for Moodiness . I could have told them that! In fact, they could have videotaped my morning today for a wonderful example. One minute we are happily eating breakfast and the next my 13 year old is grabbing her backpack and huffing out the door as her friend arrived to walk to school. The instigating event: her sister had asked her to move her backpack from the breakfast bar so she could have room to eat, and my 13 year old felt that request was inconvenient . It was a lovely family moment. Softpedia has a great summary of other brain changes in teenagers that explain just about every behavior we've all seen in teens from poor judgment to impulsiveness. The part you'll love the most is this: It is not known exactly what marks the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The end of ...
Tweens Show Up At Palm Springs Film Festival To Worship Zac Efron And Hate
2008-01-08 00:59:00
Zac Efron and his soft, dewy features had tweens flocking to the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Rabid teenage girls lurked around the Palm Spring Convention Center and screamed whenever anyone with messy hair and a lady face came into view. Relax, it's just Tanya the lesbian personal assistant. Teens these days are pretty upfront about what they liked. Bekah Hoesterey, 16 of La Quinta, wanted it to rain because she loves when Zac Efront "gets wet". Ummm, ok. Many girls were relieved of assault rifles, throwing knives, and plastic explosives meant for Vanessa Hudgens. One teenage girl, when apprehended with weaponry, wailed to cops "SHE DOESN"T LOVE HIM LIKE I DO!" Photos: Getty Images/WENN 9 more photos of Zac Efron with Vanessa Hudgens at the Palm Springs International Film Festival are after the jump.

Gossip Tweens Girl's is very popular
2007-12-24 21:40:00
Apparently the biggest following for the new series Gossip Girl isn't the CW network's target audience of 18- to 34-year old women...it's 12- to 17-year-old girls. According to Media Life Magazine, Gossip Girl "was the top-rated new show among teens 12-17..." Now, don't get me wrong, I'm very excited to know that the show is attracting positive attention, because that makes it all the more

Tweens Double Use Of Diabetes Drugs
2007-11-10 08:10:00
America's tweens more than doubled their use of type-2 diabetes medications between 2002 and 2005, with girls between 10 and 14 years of age showing a 166 percent increase. The likely cause: Obesity, which is closely associated with Type 2 diabetes. The finding is included in a study of chronic medication use in children 5 to 19 reported today at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association by researchers from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine and School of Public Health and pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts. In addition to diabetes, utilization patterns for blood pressure, cholesterol, asthma and depression medications were also examined."Across every chronic medication class we examined over this four year period of time, children's use increased, with varying patterns of growth across males and females and age groups," said Emily R. Cox, PhD, RPh, senior director of research at Express Scripts.Click here to see the rest of this article in Medic...
The Tweens/Teens Are at It Again
2007-10-23 21:28:00
I woke up this morning staring down the barrel of a shitload of e-mails informing me that the tweens and teens are back in action on QueerSighted. And I actually had to log completely out of my e-mail account because comments have been coming in literally every minute or so?and I have to get some work done today and watch The People's Court. I can't be sitting around all day, arguing with junior high school students.A chunk of the comments are in regard to JK Rowling's outing of Dumbledore, Harry Potter's headmaster, but the most interesting ones are in response to "Gay Gay Gay Gay Gaaaaaaaaaay; Or, The 'Gay' Reclamation Project." Those comments are sometimes unintentionally funny, sometimes surprisingly insightful, sometimes eye-rollingly infuriating?but, in general, the discourse about the word "gay," about issues of race, and about social movements is really fascinating.Too bad QueerSighted is "in transition." So far it's been a blast to unwittingly encourage young America...
Halloween costumes for teens and tweens have gone from scary to skanky
2007-10-22 10:12:00
So far, the Halloween season is all about looking like you turn tricks as costumes continue to get tighter, shorter and more revealing. The traditional Halloween scare fare is taking a back seat to the ever burgeoning array of ultra-sexy styles -- and not for adults only. Teens and even younger girls are buying into sexy, from belly-baring pirates, cheerleaders and divas, to sultry angels, flirty devils and racy witches. There's even a naughty Hermione, Harry Potter's sidekick. The costume trend has gone from scary to "skanky," says Halloween guru Kurt Perron, and it's definitely creeped down to the tween and teen set. The Teletubbies pic came from 2UP

Angry Tweens Are Good for Something
2007-09-24 06:44:00
Say what you want about angry tween girls, but it's because of them that I am officially launching today on AOL's QueerSighted blog. My first post, "A New Home for Gay Geeks," is shockingly devoid of anything related to High School Musical, but the managing editor did let me run a picture of an almost-naked porn star?so I'm still getting people's blood pumping, just in a different part of the body. Please visit me over there, would you?And since you're surfing the Internet, it's time for you to bookmark QueerSighted because I'll be posting three to seven entries over there every week that are as funny, fascinating, and/or absolutely controversial as anything you've read on Bamboo Nation. Should you want to subscribe to the QueerSighted RSS feed, it's easy to do. If for some reason you can't commit to a whole new blog, then you can bookmark the page that contains just my entries. Keep up with me over there because I'll be quizzing you regularly and I'll only occasionally ...

Young teens and adult supervision
2007-09-13 15:59:00
Busy Boy is finally back at school, he's not totally well, but, seems to be on the mend from bronchitis, or, perhaps pneumonia. He's missed way too much school since the year began (4 days) which isn't good for someone like him in the 6th grade, a huge transition year. Mid-term report card not likely to be pretty. He's also missed way too much football. He'll get to play, but, I'm not sure what it will do to his playing time this weekend, and, I don't know what he's missed in the way of learning new plays, either. It's kind of significant, since they don't have all that many games, and, this year is somewhat formative for the 7th and 8th grade team next year. So sue me, this is the South, football is a big deal. I hope he's well because, much to his dismay, he starts Cotillion this weekend (I said, shut up' this is the South,we do these things, too), and, there's a lot of hand shaking. It'd be all kinds of awkward if the whole group suddenly broke out wit...

The Devil & Tweens
2007-08-16 08:00:00
That little punk Zac. Who does he think he is? In an attempt to gain more recruits, I graciously email him, and tell him that while he may think he’s famous know, I have within my power to take his fame ‘to the next level.’ And his response? That snot-nosed twink’s response? “dear satan, no way, do i want to sell my soul for more fame. i’ve gotten this far without your help, and i can defiantly become more famous without you. your friend, zac efron p.s. be sure to see ‘high school musical 2’ when it comes premieres tomorrow on the disney channel!” Give me a break. He thinks a celebrity can make it in this world without the help of yours truly, The Devil? C’mon. Tori Spelling also thought she was too good to sell her soul to the devil, and look where it’s taken her. Oh I’m sorry, Tori who? So you think Zac, that because a single Rolling Stone cover features you partly shirtless, that you have it made? You probably also think that I had no part in arrangin...
Unlimited nuthin's and u? s
2007-08-10 17:18:00
In some misguided spasm of "she'll use them wisely", I signed Busy Girl's phone up for a measly 200 messages/month. She's had them about a year, and, it's been close to the limit each month, but, it's been OK. Enter: nearly 13 years old. Yes, I know you did just fine without a phone when you were her age (we can debate that later), and, that your darling "messages" you by just calling to the next room because they never leave you, but, the fact is that for many (certainly not all) kids, texting and IM is just the way they communicate. When I was 13, we spent hours on end gabbing on the phone about nothing. Now, fingers fly on the keyboard about nothing, yet everything, to them. At least this way, the phone is still available for my use which is more than my parents could say when I was that age. She's asking to move to unlimited messages, and, she's offering to pay half of it each month. That's fine and dandy, but, she doesn't have a regular income. She could have...
Taking Care of Mom & Bringing Up Tweens: The Meaning of Sandwich Generation
2007-07-17 09:37:00
Just as I thought I can start blogging early (like 9PM) because my husband went to the movie with our friend Eric, and I have already done my motherly love and duties with my kids (they are in bed reading at 9PM)...; just as I thought I have plenty of time to blog before hubby comes home ... I discovered a disaster in our house! Our refrigerator has been leaking in the back for quite a while without us noticing it until tonight :( I went to the garage to look for something when I noticed that my hubby's work bench is flooded. I looked up and the ceiling has bubbles couple with some dripping spots. I called Tatay and he helped me explore. He asked "Isn't that ceiling where your refrigerator is?". Yeah. So I went upstairs to check. Not good. There were some black spots on the floor side of the refrigerator. I asked Tatay's help to pull the refrigerator out - and lo and behold - it's flooded in the back! Actually it's not flooded but the semi-wooden floor is swollen and mo...
Homo Zappiens - Growing up in A Digital Age
2007-06-21 10:54:00
Because we have two tweens in the house (8 and 9 yr olds), I have been reading a lot about tweens. I have been combing the internet on information on tweens. I have already started a folder titled tweens because I had been bookmarking many articles, blogs and websites on tweens. One of these days I would organize them into a blog of it's own. Through reading and observation, one striking fact about tweens is that they are very computer savvy. It's the age when their interest moves from traditional toys (like G.I. Joes and Barbies) to computers, video games and websites. If you're a parent of tweens...or an educator...I want to share this book ith you:The title of the book is Homo Zappiens: Growing up in a Digital Age. It's written by Wim Veen and Ben Vrakking.I was actually on the bookstore that day to buy a DVD that my boss asked me to purchase. While in the bookstore during an office errand, this book caught my eye. I browsed quickly and after browsing I knew I needed to buy t...

Teakwondo Tournament and Tweens Camp
2007-05-29 16:44:00
Saturday, May 26th, was a very hectic day for us as a family. Two very important family events were scheduled on that day. First, the Taekwondo Tournament where my son competed (he won 2 golds and 1 silver medals) and second, the Tweens Family Camp. Before we found out that the Tweens Camp is scheduled that Saturday, my husband already committed himself to helping out in the tournament. He therefore unfortunately missed the Tweens Camp. The location of these two events were so far from each other that I told my husband that that day is probably the day I have driven the longest in one day since I learned how to drive. We went to the Teakwondo tournament early morning and then around 2 PM (after my son's events were done), we bailed out on the tournament and drove to the Tweens Camp and stayed there until 8:15 PM.I will post more details of the Tournament and Tweens Camp in my other blog (All About Tweens - which is still under construction), I just wanted to do this quickie post to ...
Erring on the boy-girl side of caution
2007-05-07 23:12:00
Busy Girl wants to have some friends over for a party after school is out. The proposed party included male guests. My first reaction? Despite the tween dating stuff, it would be fine with me, we'd limit the numbers, and, I know her friends, including the guys, and, they're good kids. They're all friends, and, the "dating" thing really only involves a couple of them. But, even though it sounds like fun, it's going to be girls only. Why? Because I don't want to be "that" parent. You know the one. They "allow boy-girl parties" in the 7th grade, and, their parenting skills are suspect until proven differently, even if they've done nothing wrong. I admit, I had the same bias when Busy Girl went to that party a few months ago. It turned out just fine, but, I still subconsciously think of it as "too advanced". Even though we'd be doing the same thing, I feel like it's be different if we had a party, because, well, it'd be us, and, we all know I have mad chaperoning skil...
One skater, two skater, three skater, four.
2007-05-05 20:42:00
You know the standard movie plot where a kid is home without parents, and, other kids tell everyone there's a party, and, tons of kids show up? That kind of happened to me last night. Only it was me who was the one alone. I don't quite know how it snowballed, but, here's the story: Busy Girl got invited to meet some people at the skating rink last night She admitted there wouldn't be parents there, so, I told her I'd go with her, and, hang out while she skated. Busy Girl asks if we can give a ride to one of her soccer teammates since she would already be there with Busy Girl at the soccer practice right before skating. I said, "OK." Two kids skating. Teammate rides to practice with Another Girl. Busy Girl: "Can we give Another Girl a ride, too?" Me: "Sure." Three girls, no big deal. Busy Girl: "Neighbor is going too, can we pick her up?" Me: "OK, we have room." Four girls, that's OK, but, I really wish this had been planned ahead of time. Right before practice: ...

Tickle me Emo
2007-04-27 17:02:00
So this emo thing? Confusing, no? Just for the record, I'm not overly worried about Busy Boy's hair attempts, it's just that he seriously doesn't have the hair for it, what with the Way Bizarre Busy Hairline he inherited (from his dad's family), he just looks silly. Besides, he goes to private Catholic school, it's not like he can do anything too out there with his hair. Anyway, "Emo" is typically a genre of music (some say derived from "emotional") that pairs with a certain style, and, attitude. Dude, I'm 42 years old, that's all I got about that, and, I probably just made anyone under 25 cringe just because I said the word "emo", so, we will turn to the Internets for our education: - "Emo" via Urban Dictionary - How to dress emo - a video primer: Now, take out your notebooks, there's going to be a test.
The Go-Betweens - Liberty Belle & The Black Diamond Express
2007-02-22 06:00:02
Breezy, jangly, and full of accessible twang, ‘Liberty Belle & The Black Diamond Express’ is one of the best efforts by these Australian indie rock mainstays. Without sacrificing the edge or emotional intensity of the band’s first three records, ‘Liberty Belle & The Black Diamond Express’ lightens the Go-Betweens’ sound to a summery beauty. Although ...
Co-ed Sleepovers for tweens?why are we even having this discussion?
2007-02-18 05:14:01
Ok, so I’m a little late to the party. But you know me. Always fashionably late. A couple of weeks ago there were some rumblings about teens having co-ed sleepovers. Then a few days ago the subject was brought up again when a mother told about her children’s school having a co-ed lock-in. Being that I have a tween and a teenager, I found this very interesting. Hormonal teenagers having sleepovers with the opposite sex. Sounds like a good idea. Lock-ins When I was little I was a Camp Fire Girl, a Blue Bird to be specific. One day all of the Camp Fire Girls in the whole city, and probably surrounding cities, had a lock-in at a local mall. I could be exaggerating because everything seems bigger when you’re a child, but there were thousands of girls hanging out in the mall that night. It was a requirement that a parent accompany you to the lock-in. So my dad went. Now that I think about it, was that appropriate? For a man to be at an overnight event with thousands of g...
