New Theme: Twenty Eleven
2011-06-06 20:04:00
Last year on WordPress.com we introduced the world to the first new WordPress default theme in 5 years — the first annual default theme — Twenty Ten. Now it’s our pleasure to introduce you all to its successor, Twenty Eleven. The Twenty Eleven Theme It might look familiar. Yep, Twenty Eleven started life as the Duster theme before it made the theme big leagues. But it’s not just a renamed Duster. There are tons of really cool improvements and features packed into it — more Post Formats, beautiful new header images, alternate color schemes and layouts, even custom link colors. All those features add up to the best part of Twenty Eleven: just how customizable it is. It looks great as a blog, a showcase of all your posts, and even a tumblelog or photoblog. If you want to know more about the cool new features in Twenty Eleven we’ve made a page that outlines them all on the Theme Showcase. You can read up on Twenty Eleven there and check out a l...
Google Overhauling The YouTube Experience With Twenty New Channels
2011-04-08 08:26:00
Google is about to revamp the YouTube experience in the coming months. The videos that we see on the site are uploaded by users. A video is likely to go viral and become popular depending on its content. YouTube’s overall revenue is not dependent on individual videos, rather because it musters a large collection of them. But, a fact that always seems to pop-up is that Google never shares the revenue that it earns from YouTube after spending $1.6 billion to acquire it in 2006. Now, Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is planning to create twenty channels on YouTube which will show professionally created original content unlike user-generated content that the site is now populated with. Google will spend $100 million for creating these premium channels and the content that is going to be aired through them. According to sources, Google is in talks with some production companies for contents to be featured on these channels. WSJ’s report also states that, these progra...

How Bad Is It for Twenty-Something Men?
2011-02-21 13:35:00
Over the weekend, Kay Hymowitz wrote a piece in the The Wall Street Journal suggesting that men in their 20s are living in an extended adolescence, not quite boys, not quite men. They are, according to her article, "pre-adults."On the one hand, this is not bad. It's just a demographic shift made possible by the fact that more 20-somethings than ever before have the incomes required to live on their own, do what they want, and delay marriage/family well into their thirties -- if ever (55% of people 25 to 29 have never been married, vs. 16% in the 1970s). They are taking their time to figure out what they want to do in their careers (as opposed to just...
Thankful: Day twenty-nine
2010-11-30 06:14:00
I have a great many things I could go into tonight for which I am thankful, but I am also plain tuckered out for the Mighty Parenting that I have doled out for the betterment of my wayward children.So I am retiring for the night with a movie, a husband - not any ol' one, I like mine quite a bit - and a class of wine and re-posting something I wrote a year ago.I Guess that Makes me the Angry Elf{thankful for a reservoir of posts to draw from when I'm lazy need a break}
Thankful: Day Twenty-eight
2010-11-29 03:16:00
I lounged around in my pjs until lunchtime today, something I never do. I read half of Stephen King's Full Dark, No Stars (excellent, by the way), addressed Christmas cards and played helper elf to Greg while he strung our outdoor Christmas lights.I'd hoped to *accomplish* more today, after a fun weekend of playing, but it wasn't to be.{thankful for luxury of leisure}
Thankful: Day Twenty-seven
2010-11-28 04:31:00
Zack's best friend came down this weekend, for the last home game at Autzen Stadium. (His dad, Chris, scored tickets for the menfolk; thanks Chris!)I'm too tired right now to give this weekend it's proper due here, but the Miltons' hearts are happy and content after being blessed with so much good company the past three days.{thankful for the love of good friends & family}
Thankful: Day Twenty-six
2010-11-26 16:39:00
I don't do Black Fridays; years spent in retail has left me extremely disinterested in that sort of chaos.I do snails. Or at least the kids do, gathering 'families' of 'Garys', making homes for them in the backyard on Thanksgiving. Well, until Caden accidentally stepped on the mama.(She spent the rest of the afternoon looking through the ads for a replacement shell.)Greg finds these things repulsive, though more dignified than the common slug - at least they have the sense to cover themselves - but then again, who likes a slug?{thankful for the small things & big imaginations}

Thankful: Day twenty-three

We came from a city that really likes to hype up Storm Tracker Snowstorm coverage, commandeering all regular programming when ice or hail or sleet or threat of such weather is in the forecast, so I didn't pay much mind to the mention of possible snow in Eugene.I mean, we do live at 430 feet. Snow seems unlikely.So we were all a little surprised to wake to a blanket of snow...and an official SNOW DAY. Woohoo.Pretty, huh? But the boys weren't the only ones having fun...I think Prissy Pants sorta hates me when I put her little coat on her.Even 7th graders can't resist a day of snowball fights.And Mama Milton?I snapped the pictures, andprepared for Thanksgiving while the kids had a fabulous time playing with the neighbors.{thankful for snow days}
Thankful: Day twenty-two

It's hard when you're first married and getting acquainted with your new family. Not that I'm newly married, hardly so, but I remember how much I wanted to impress Greg's Mom early on. To fit in.I have always been thankful to have a mother-in-law that has always let me be who I am, and do things my own way. I imagine, now that I have a son, how hard it must be to let go of your boy and watch as they ease into a life without you.So, happy birthday to the woman that raised my husband up to be the man he is today: Kind and smart and hard-working.Thank you.My mother-in-law, Marilyn, my sister-in-law, Nikki, & my niece, AdriChristmas 2006{thankful for Marilyn}

?Our absence was my language.? I remember the agonising wait in that muggy basement, feeling increasingly sick as it gets closer to my turn. In the audience I hear my friends laughing at the others. ?For the dawn.? I was trying to escape. I?d set everything on relocating to Canada, perhaps seeking that feeling of home felt when I?d visited Vancouver years before. I even moved home to save money. ?This is a war.? When I quit my job they asked me where I was going to. I replied I was going to write. I received a pitying look in response, as if I hadn?t yet figured out how the world worked. As an unemployed writer I would sleep during the day, working all night ...

I?ve never been an ?office job? person. By 26 I?d grown desperately unhappy, aware of time moving unbearably fast, frantically grabbing at each wasted second. I felt isolated, somehow exiled in London, desperate to escape. I remember once leaving work, inexplicably on the verge of tears, and staring at traffic on Euston Road. The city ...

Twenty five saw the rise of the Canadians. If my life were a drama then this ?season? saw an influx of new characters, none of which I could now comprehend having ever lived without. Graduation was intense; I moved back to London without focus or direction. I started a beautifully destructive and turbulent relationship. We no longer speak. My abiding memory of my 21st birthday was sitting beside a dual-carriageway in Victoria eating soggy overpriced sandwiches as I watched the traffic pass. English Premiership's top twenty to qualify for Champions League next seaso
2009-03-12 13:17:00
NewsBiscuit says,'The allocation of Champions League places to English clubs is to be increased from four to twenty next season it was revealed at a press conference this morning. "We want to maintain this competition's reputation for bringing together the elite in European football." explained a UEFA spokesman "Clearly clubs such as Middlesbrough, Fulham or Hull provide a better test for the top English teams than the likes of Real Madrid or Juventus. Consequently we have taken the decision to phase out the involvement of sides from countries such as Spain, Italy, France and Germany ...and the other European nations." During a heated 'questions and answers' session at the end of the press conference journalists challenged the spokesman over these plans, pointing out that a competition featuring solely the top English clubs would duplicate the Premiership and diminish the appeal of the Champions League. "On the contrary," the spokesman responded "this will continue to be a far m...

Twenty-Five Things I've Actually Stolen
2008-08-07 08:35:00
I borrowed the basis for the following list from something I saw at Elkit in Wonderland. Most of the items on that list were less stolen and more experienced to increase joy. The items on my list? All actually stolen. Because I am a petty thief. Or something.I picked dandelions from my neighbours' lawns and presented them in a bouquet to my mother.I took the stationery from a hotel room in Edmonton, Alberta with no intention of writing letters on it.When I lived with my parents, I pocketed extra packets of raw sugar from restaurants, because my mother only kept white sugar at home for coffee.When I forgot my bag of clothes to bring to a clothing swap, I still managed to leave with a sweater.I secreted into my luggage a vintage greeting card with a baby wearing a sash that read "Happy New Year!" on the front from my grandmother's collection.I took the tiny lightbulb that flashed during fire drills out from under its red glass globe in a girls' dormitory.I took a photograph of...

Here are some everyday, helpful hints to get you started, keep you going, and help you stick to your diet.1. Never leave home "starving." Always have a light snack before eating dinner in a restaurant, such as a piece of fruit, a glass of juice or a carrot.2. Don't go food shopping on an empty stomach! You'll be tempted to buy everything in sight.3. Don't be tempted by treats. Store them out of view, off counter-tops and as out-of-reach as possible.4. Don't eat in front of the TV. Watching the boob tube -- instead of watching your plate -- lulls you into overeating. Also avoid being tempted by food and snack commercials.5. Make it a rule in your house to confine your meals to the dining room or kitchen table! Never eat standing up! This leads to mindless snacking.6. Think before you drink. Alcohol adds lots of calories, but no nutrients. Also, it weakens your willpower to avoid the wrong food choices. Hangovers can cause wicked cravings for fatty or high carbohydrate foods that ...
