Below is the Jay Cutler article from 7 news .    ******************************- Life as Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler once knew it has changed. Cutler was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a Broncos source confirmed. While this is the most serious type of diabetes, making Cutler insulin dependent, the Broncos are confident it will not negatively impact his career performance. Cutler, who could not be reached for comment, has been taking insulin shots since he was diagnosed and has been participating in the Broncos' offseason workout program. Several athletes have enjoyed long professional careers while playing with Type 1 diabetes, including former big-league baseball stars Ron Santo and Jackie Robinson and hockey's Bobby Clarke. Among the former NFL players who played despite Type 1 diabetes were center Jay Leeuwenburg, who starred at the University of Colorado, quarterback Wade Wilson, and defensive back Mike Echols. Gene's Role in Type 1 Diabetes
2007-11-08 02:49:00
Scientists at the University of Virginia Health System have identified an enzyme believed to be an important instigator of the inner-body conflict that causes Type 1 diabetes. A chronic condition that affects nearly three million American children and adults, Type 1 diabetes is more severe than Type 2. Type 1 diabetes, also called autoimmune diabetes, arises when the body's infection-fighting white blood cells start destroying the beta-cells that produce insulin in the pancreas........

Learn how a 25 year old guy that's had Type 1 juvenile diabetes since he was 27 months old lowered his average blood sugar levels by over 50 points and now takes less than half the insulin injections that he used to take!Hi,My name is Curtis McCoy and I've had Type 1 Diabetes since I was a very young kid. I've taken insulin shots for as long as I can remember. I hate taking insulin shots, but that's just something that a lot of diabetics have to live with! When I was a kid, I had a pretty easy time keeping my blood sugar levels under control but as I got older I started to develop insulin resistance.I'm now 25 years old, and I've had diabetes for over 23 years. I was used to taking 5 - 6 insulin shots per day, and figured I'd have to take this many shots forever!I take Diamaxol to lower my blood sugars now, and I've cut the amount of insulin that I have to take by 50%My average blood sugar level is lower, and I feel healthier! Omega 3 fatty acid reduces type 1 diabetes
2007-09-27 09:30:00
U.S. researchers say dietary omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of developing diabetes in children who are genetically at risk for the disease. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found higher consumption of omega-3 fatty acids - found in fish - by children at risk for type 1 diabetes decreased by 55 percent the risk of pancreatic islet autoimmunity, which is linked to development of diabetes.Although it is not yet known what initiates the autoimmune process in diseases such as type 1 diabetes, the study authors believe it is likely that both genetic background and environmental factors such as dietary factors contribute to the disease process. Jill M. Norris of the University of Colorado at Denver led researchers in examining the diets of 1,770 children at increased risk for type 1 diabetes - defined as having either a high diabetes risk human leukocyte antigen genotype or a sibling or parent with type 1 diabetes. Fifty-eight children became...

Do women with fibromyalgia have fathers who were 32 or older when they were born?Genetic Mutations Tied To Father in Most Cases By NATALIE ANGIER Published: May 17, 1994WHEN it comes to parceling out blame for birth defects and genetic disorders, women have historically shouldered most of the burden, particularly older mothers who supposedly risked their offspring's well-being by letting their eggs sit around growing progressively more stale and chromosomally unstable. By contrast, men have been seen as eternally fertile, able to father healthy children well into their dotage. But growing evidence suggests that men, rather than women, may be the source of most new genetic mutations in the population, and thus may be responsible for the majority of cong...

Umbilical cord blood may safely preserve insulin production in children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, as per findings from a small national pilot study presented Monday (June 25) at the American Diabetes Associations 67th Scientific Sessions in Chicago. University of Florida scientists sought to determine whether it is feasible to use a patients own cord blood stem cells to neutralize the bodys autoimmune attack on the pancreas and help restore the organs ability to make insulin, which regulates how the body uses sugar and other nutrients for energy........
Supplement Inhibits Multiple Sclerosis, Type 1 Diabetes
2007-09-06 13:10:00
A glucosamine-like dietary supplement has been found to suppress the damaging autoimmune response seen in multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes mellitus, as per University of California, Irvine health sciences researchers. In studies on mice, Dr. Michael Demetriou and his colleagues with the UC Irvine Center for Immunology observed that N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), which is similar but more effective than the widely available glucosamine, inhibited the growth and function of abnormal T-cells that incorrectly direct the immune system to attack specific tissues in the body, such as brain myelin in MS and insulin-producing cells of the pancreas in diabetes. Findings from the study are published on the online version of the Journal of Biological Chemistry........

Researchers Identify Gene Variant That Indicates Type 1 Diabetes Risk
2007-07-20 08:37:00
A press release issued July 15th, from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, announced that scientists have identified a gene variant that predicts which children may be at risk for type 1 diabetes.Type 1 diabetes affects mainly children. The insulin producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed by the child's immune system. Kids with type 1 are dependent on insulin injections for life.In two separate phases of the trial, scientists not only rechecked four previously discovered type 1 diabetes gene indicators, but discovered another type 1 gene labeled KIAA0350. It appears that KIAA0350 is active in immune cells and is a component of "natural killer" cells that usually protect the body from foreign invaders, but if KIAA0350 experiences a mutation, it may trigger an autoimmune attack of the islet cells in the pancreas, thereby causing permanent destruction of the cells.Constantin Polychronakos, M.D., director of Pediatric Endocrinology at McGill University and senior author of t...

Causes of Type 1 Diabetes
2007-07-12 09:07:00
Type 1 diabetes is an inherited defect of the immune system triggered by an environmental stimuli. The problem may be in the on switch of the immune system in which the viral stimuli do not turn the system on. The virus is then allowed to penetrate the beta cell and cause its destruction. Conversely, ...

Chicago, IL (LifeNews.com) -- Another study has been published showing that adult stem cell research has just as much potential, if not more, than embryonic stem cells to help patients with various diseases. In this cases, researchers at University of Florida founds that stem cells from umbilical cord blood helped children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The study found that stem cell transfusions using the adult stem cells helped the children reduce their disease severity, possibly re-setting the immune system and slowing the destruction of their insulin-producing cells.Michael J. Haller, MD, a professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine and lead author of the study, presented the findings at the American Diabetes Association's 67th Annual Scientific Sessions."After only six months, it is too early to tell how long the children will benefit from this therapy, but early signs indicate that it may have helped enhance blood glucose control and management," Dr. Ha...
