ST Telemedia`s sale of Indosat shares to Qtel "unethical", KPPU
2008-06-10 01:37:00
The Commission for Supervision of Business Competition (KPPU) said the sale of Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT)`s 40.8 percent stake in PT Indosat to Qatar Telecom (Qtel) is an "unethical act and a show of disrespect for an ongoing legal process.""While still involved in the legal case being handled by the Supreme Court, STT has sold its shares. This is tantamount to trampling not only on the KPPU`s but also on the nation`s self-respect," KPPU chief Syamsul Maarif said here Monday.Qtel on Friday (June 6) announced it had bought 40.8 percent of Indosat shares through Asian Mobile Holding which in STT`s structure is the owner of Indonesia Communication Limited (ICL) in whose name the Indosat shares were registered. The Qatari company paid 2.4 billion Singapore dollars or 1.8 billion US dollars for the shares. Not long ago, the KPPU ruled Temasek Holding, STT`s parent company, had violated Indonesia`s anti-monopoly law and ordered the Singaporean group to divest its stakes...
3 Way Link Exchange Being Abused by Unethical SEOs
2008-05-02 15:22:00
A colleague passed me this recent discussion on Webmaster World which discusses how a lot of SEO experts think that 3 Way link exchange can now be detected algorithmically. 3 way links were developed by the SEO industry in order to create an alternate linking strategy when two-way (or reciprocal) links were ‘devalued'. The idea was that by creating a triangular structure, the links were undetectable. The Webmaster World discussion would seem to imply that more recent thinking is that they are still found. What it highlights perhaps more is that three way links were specifically created to ‘game' the search engines, and perhaps that has made them a target for detection. Aside from the fact that the reciprocal link is not as dead as people think, what I have seen more recently is an increase in link exchange requests that are three way, but offer a poor link in exchange for a quality one. e.g. Dear Webmaster   I know you are interested in boosting traff...

Phoenix Short Sale Listings - Unattractive? Maybe. Unethical? Probably not
2008-03-12 20:59:00
If you’ve read this blog for any length of time you know I’m not a fan of short sales for my buyers. The combination of an imaginary list price, fairly minimal motivation on the part of the bank and the extended response periods that can result in unforeseen opportunity costs tend to make a short sale ...

Pre-foreclosure investing: You don?t need to be unethical to profit

People in pre-foreclosure will believe you (and thus sell to you instead of the other guys) if you are sincere, if you are forthright without being pushy, if you explain how you can help, if you give them all their options (including those that will not financially benefit you directly in any way), if you ...
Unethical Advertising is Loaded with Risk
2007-12-13 06:00:00
Advertising is basically about creating a demand for your products or services among prospective customers in a way that is entertaining and does not mislead. This point about ?misleading? is very important as many advertisers in the zeal to boost demand for the products/services they are promoting resort to all kinds of unethical practices, as their primary goal is to get the goods sold. Many ethics-conscious creative graphic design firms, advertising design agencies, branding firms, and firms involved in production of television commercials steer clear of these practices but there are quite a few fly-by-night operators who don?t. Some tom-tom their products as "the best in the market", citing all kinds of dubious statistics, studies and figures in their claims. Some customers are smart enough to see through their game and this strategy does boomerang on the marketers at times creating immense damage to all branding and positioning efforts of the company. However, a large p...

Pharma Companies Conducting Unethical Clinical Trials
2007-11-06 13:59:00
In one of the most shocking stories in modern day India, a BBC investigation has revealed that Pharmaceutical companies have been recruiting patients without their consent for drug trials which has become a big business in India today.According to the BBC, six years ago an experimental drug from the US called M4N was injected into cancer patients in India without being properly tested on animals first. Later it was discovered that several patients had not known they were part of a clinical trial. In almost all cases the poor patients have no idea that experiments were being carried out on them. BBC's Reporter Paul Kenyon tracked down a drug trial being conducted for a major drug company in a psychiatric unit at a hospital in Gujarat to test an anti-psychotic drug developed by the drug pharmaceutical company Johnson and Johnson. But the patient said that he had no idea that he was part of a clinical trial. "I didn't know that experiments were being carried out on me. I was told tha...

Is This AdWords CTR Quality Score Trick Unethical?
2007-08-29 12:24:00
I heard a story last week about how someone has setup an AdWords campaign to advertise a charity website without the charities knowledge. The sole intention of the campaign is to gain a high CTR for non-competitive keywords in order to increase their own account's overall quality score! While this is quite a sneaky black hat technique it's clear how it can be very effective. The charities landing page should have a high quality score anyway and if fairly non-competitive, brand name/relevant keywords are bid upon it's possible that well-known brands will achieve a CTR in the region of 40%+ at a very low CPC. In the long-term the ad spend for this should easily be covered by the overall CPC savings. This does sound unethical but at the same time the charities are benefiting from extra free traffic and this does seem to comply with Google's link policy so is it actually that bad? Personally I think the charities should be made aware of this by the advertiser and if there are no compl...

Link Exchange made unethical in Google
2007-08-13 05:51:00
Link Exchange was a major step in SEO used by many webmasters. Recently Matt Cutss (a google official) announced that extreme link exchanges will result in a Ban of your website from Google. According to him, Upto 20 link exchanges is allowed. More than 30 or 40 will get you in ban from Google search engine. Matt said its a policy of google to make their search result relevant. But do you think this policy of Google is good? I think no. Because Webmasters are the key ones, who make contents in the web world. Google is the most liked and 70% popular search engine in the world, which works on back link algorithm. In order to get listed in Google to drive ethical traffic to website, a webmaster needs to boost his back links. If such a search engine like Google(which works on back links) says," I will ban you for getting more links and link exchanges" what about the poor webmaster who generates contents in web world? Google (though world...

Negative Keywords-Unethical way of Optimization
2007-07-26 10:24:00
One of the prominent problem faced in the arena of Pay Per Click Search Engine Marketing is how the junk traffic can be avoided . And the term Junk Traffic has a direct relationship with keyword bringing traffic. The Keywords can be Negative or Positive keywords Negative keywords are those which are totally irrelevant to the website you are promoting . Negative Keywords are used in keyword advertising to prevent ads from being shown when the search terms contain the negative keywords . For example the keyword “FREE” has a lot of traffic but if you are not giving anything for free then it is an absolute disaster to your website as it will attract Junk Traffic .The conversion of visitors into business leads would be very low and the cost would be tremendously high . But still some sites do promotion on the negative keywords just to attract traffic this is called negative keyword promotion or optimizing negative keyword . Negative keyword promotion has some advantages like , ...

Is asking for blog comments unethical?
2007-07-13 23:21:00
There’s been a good old blogosphere mini-storm brewing over the past few days around Debbie Weil and an email she sent on behalf of a client (GSK and its blog Alliconnect). One of the recipients, David Murray, posted his thoughts on the email that he received: Hi everyone, This is a shameless request. I’m working with GlaxoSmithKline on theofficial corporate blog for alli, the first FDA-approved, OTC weightloss product. You may have seen the TV ads. While traffic to the blog is growing, readers seem shy about leaving Comments. You can help jump start the two-way conversation! Take a peek at theblog at http://www.alliconnect.com. If you’re inspired or provoked, leave a comment on any entry. No needto say that you know me, of course. It really is kind of neat that a Global 100 company is doing a bloglike this. It’s not easy. - D Debbie also posted a similar message on her blog, asking people to check out the new blog and leave a comment if they felt so incline...
Unethical Marketing Practices on Myspace Uncovered
2007-06-26 19:14:00
Ever wonder why you continue to get friend invitations from scantily clad women on your MySpace account? Before you pat yourself on the back for being the next Don Juan, you should know that this is the work of an affiliate marketer using pay per lead as their vehicle to make money. I do not advocate this type of affiliate marketing personally. I find it annoying to have to delete ten to twenty spam friend invitations on a weekly basis. Still, I think that it is always interesting to see and understand other methods of affiliate marketing to possibly vamp (or re-vamp) at a future time. Warning: This might be considered unethical. Once again this is only for informational purposes.
Factors Considered Unethical Or Black Hat SEO
2007-06-12 14:12:00
There are certain factors by implementing of which will be considered as Black Hat techniques.....a.Page cloaking is a BIG one, which basically consists of using server side scripts to determine whether the visitor is a search engine or a human and serving up different pages depending. The script would serve up a keyword rich, totally souped up page to search robots, while giving humans an entirely different page.b. Link farms are considered black hat. Link farms are basically sites which consist of masses of links, for the purpose of getting rankings in search engines and turning a profit (usually off of affiliate program advertisements on the website).c. Duplicate content can keep a page from getting indexed, and some people have even reported trouble with entire websites being duplicated by unethical webmasters, causing problems with their rankings.d. Spamming keywords, in meta tags, title tags, or in your page's content is a black hat SEO trick that used to work well back in th...

Business Ethics and Unethical Practices
2007-05-18 14:42:00
The study of business ethics and its implications for different stakeholders have seen tremendous growth in the past few decades. There has also been a rise in the use and development of codes of ethics and announcements for ethical practices by many firms; however companies are still criticized for their unethical practices at different levels (Papers4you.com, 2006). Business ethics, according to the literature has been entrenched with the philosophical details of Ethics (Trevino & Nelson, 1999). Ethics has been defined as the activity of examining the moral standards of a society, and asking how these standards apply to ones life and whether these standards are reasonable (Velasquez, 1998; p. 11). The literature on business ethics is divided on its views about the motivation and reason for businesses to have an ethical dimension. Drawing upon Harrison (2001), there are two major schools of thoughts, firstly those who suggest that firms are profit generating institutions and theref...

Negligent Consumers vs. Unethical Companies
2007-05-09 13:52:00
Can any company "really expect the average consumer to act with strict prudence" and do companies need to take precautions "with the worst case scenario in mind as to consumer behavior" (Hartley, 33, 2005)?These two questions illustrate one of the most striking ethical issues that face every product-based company in operation. In the particular case of Firestone and Ford, consumers were held partly responsible for their tire blowouts and Explorer roll-overs because they did not check their tire pressures before driving, over-loaded their vehicles, and drove at high speeds for long periods of time. According to Firestone and Ford, the results of this consumer negligence was not something their companies should be held accountable for. Not surprisingly, this stance did not sit well many of their consumers, nor the general public. And although checking tire pressure before driving is commonly recommended in vehicle operation manuals, rarely, if ever, does anyone follow this guideline.B...

Is it ever unethical to force a father to pay child support
2007-03-22 02:28:00
The only time a biological father should be relieved of the support obligation is when he is not married to the mother, and he has unequivocally told the mother that he does not want a child. Otherwise, it is always ethical to force the biological father to pay child support. Many deadbeat dads put their own interest above the interest of the child. Thus, creating a conflict between them and the court system because the latter is only concerned with the best interest of the child. These "fathers" ignore the fact that it takes a lot of money to raise a child. Why should the child be penalized for drawing the losing lottery of a "father" who skips out on an obligation as old as humanity itself? I'm referring to the obligation to provide for the support of a child. The amount of the obligation is a separate matter, and it can legitimately be argued that the court system has some inequity build in. However, that inequity is usually overstated. Those fathers who have been denied visitat...
