2009-10-07 22:23:00
In an agreement that could save the Chicago Sun-Times, the paper and the union that represnt editorial employees have reached a tentative deal--yet to be approved by the union membership--that could pave the way for the company's sale and, it is hope, its salvation..Crain's Chicago Business reported the deal....

Steele: short-sighted on same-sex civil unions
2009-02-28 22:51:00
Sometimes the most amusing thing about reading the comments is noting how readily so many of our critics ignore the points we make (frequently misrepresenting them if they address them at all) to wonder why we don’t blog on this or that subject. It’s as if we have all the time in the world and unlimited ...
Now You?re a Racist if you Don?t Support Unions?
2009-02-12 14:57:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Union shill Ron Gettelfinger wants you to know that if you don’t support unions you are a racist. That’s right. If you don’t want the undemocratic card check bill to pass Congress you are exactly like the negro hanging, civil rights denying, Jim Crow enforcers of the 1950s. In one of the most ...

Unions? Incestuous Relationship to Government Means BAD Government
2009-02-08 14:45:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Lisa Jones of the web news site The Examiner has a great piece that exemplifies what I have been saying for a long time: unions are antithetical to good government. Jones details a story of the incestuous relationship between anti-democratic union thugs and the city government in Denver, Colorado. Her sad tale of ...

-By Warner Todd Huston As we reported a few days ago, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported its newest stats on union membership for 2008. These stats show that union membership has increased for the second straight year. But where it has increased is of key importance. The report shows a gain of 428,000 members, the largest ...
What do Obama and Unions Have in Common? Communists!
2009-01-31 14:21:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Michael Richardson of the on-line news group the Examiner wrote recently about some revealing quotes about the modern American Communist Party by a Richard Winger of Ballot Access News. Speaking about how the Communist Party in the US has for the most part ceased trying to run candidates for office, Winger points out ...

Paul Cox wrote a new blog post: Civil Unions/Domestic Partnerships are the same as Marriage....right? First of all, What is Marriage? When people marry, they tend to do so for reasons of love and commitment. But marriage is also a legal status, which comes with rights and responsibilities. Marriage establishes a legal kinship between you and your spouse. It is a relationship that is recognized across cultures, countries and religions. What ...

2009-01-11 13:40:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Unions gave many millions of dollars to elect Democrats and Barack Obama last November. Now they want payback. Obama?s First Gift to Unions
2008-12-26 13:10:00
- By Warner Todd Huston Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of Labor is his first gift to labor unions. A recent Wall Street Journal report ...

In his latest Op-ed, he puts forward ...

Auto Unions Reason for Senate Denial of Bailout
2008-12-15 16:05:00

Congressional Republicans blocked the $14 billion auto bailout on Thursday and one of the main reasons was because of undue union excess of a sort that sees US ...

Welcome, one and all to the most intense nightly read on the ’sphere… BitsBlog’s Nightly Ramble. A cold, cold Monday, today. Buffalo had 14 degrees, this morning. Syracuse had a low of 5. My truck struggled to life this morning, and then after advising me it was 16 outside… (Making my driveway the garden spot in the state).. that there might be ice possible. Always helpful information, that truck. I can’t complain. Years ago, I had one that your name would have to be Petty or something to get it started on a cold morning. Heck, Billy, I called the oil price crumble long before August… both here and at Q&O.  Of course none of the drooling morons who called me out on that… including Erb,  never showed up to point out I was right, either… not that I expected it.  It’d be nice if someone reminded them, though. At the moment, I’ll say I didn’t expect the price to drop quite as low as it has. I figured we&...

Union Group Uses Worker Death to Advertise for Unions
2008-12-05 19:38:00
-By Warner Todd Huston I guess it doesn’t get more cynical than this, but a union advocacy group that has for years been needling Wal-Mart to unionize has used the tragic death of a Wal-Mart worker on Black Friday as a reason to push their union ideas. Even though that worker’s trampling death has nothing whatever ...

-By Warner Todd Huston With the precedent set of a bailout from Washington, the automakers are crawling and sticking their hands out for a new bailout for them. But, will a bailout for the Auto Industry actually go to the Industry or will it be a sop to unions? Unfortunately, it looks like an auto industry ...

And, in keeping with the Times’ ...
Labor Unions: A Brood of Vipers
2008-11-04 13:13:00
-By Thomas E. Brewton Labor unions make us poorer and they prolong recessions. Senator Obama’s short-sighted support for wealth-redistribution taxation and for socialist labor unions is nothing new for Democrat/Socialist politicians. Both in England and in the United States, labor unions led the political assault to overwhelm the individualistic traditions that made those nations great and to impose ...

Has it Come to This? Unions Striking Against Unions?
2008-09-19 23:07:00
-By Warner Todd Huston Unions in America have finally arrived at farce. Yes, they have become a parody of themselves because now we have an example of a union being formed so that it can strike against… its own union. Confused? Don’t blame you. From the Associated Press we get this tale of high comedy, this ...

The Necessity and Benefits of Unions in Capitalism
2008-07-27 07:31:00
Responding to my Unions and Wage - Productivity Increases post, James Schipper notes:You are quite right in arguing that no capitalist will increase wages as long as he can hire more workers at the going wage. That's why it's important to restrict the supply of labor within a country by immigration controls and by convincing workers to limit their offspring. One 19th French economist was once asked what advice he had for the proletariat, and he answered: "Faites moins d'enfants" = make fewer babies. Not bad advice. As long as the proletarians keep increasing their numbers, their chances of prospering are so much smaller. With open borders, the very large number of unskilled workers in the Third World are a huge reserve army of the unemployed. And then some people still wonder why so many capitalists like immigration.I quite agree with you that unions can be very beneficial for their members. However, it is very doubtful that unions can do much for the wage-earning class as a whole.S...
Unions and Wage - Productivity Increases
2008-07-26 06:57:00
James Schipper's comments in the comments section suggest that productivity naturally leads to increased wages in capitalism due to the laws of capital and labor. I argue that productivity increases during conditions of labor surplus normal in most capitalist states probably come mostly due to the militant actions of Organized Labor.James does aver that the replacement of American workers with illegal alien labor did have an effect on the destruction of wages in the construction industry. I argue that there were two stages to the process.First they broke the unions, then they hired the illegals. Those were the two stages. The exact same thing occurred in many manufacturing plants, especially meat processing. Slaughterhouses, poultry-processing and seafood processing plants all used to be good union jobs with high wages as recently as the 1980's.First they took out the unions, then they brought in illegals or other immigrants to the work. Many other fields besides construction have...

How Unions Demonize Opponents
2008-07-11 18:42:00
-By Warner Todd Huston There is an interesting little report about a city Supervisor in Amherst, New York and how the city employee unions have demonized him since being elected as a reformer 2 years ago. It is an object lesson in how unions will demonize instead of work with anyone. When Mohan took office 2 years ...

Teachers Unions Succeed in Ending Scholarships

CT ?Bad Boy Clause? Passes, Unions Oppose Punishing Criminal Public Employe
2008-06-21 07:28:00
-By Warner Todd Huston In an historic decision that I hope is duplicated in other states, Connecticut has finally passed the “bad boy clause,” a law that would find public employees (like elected politicians and state workers) who are convicted of criminal behavior having their pensions denied them as a result of that criminal behavior. Of course, ...
Unite calls on Gordon Brown to turn left.
2008-06-02 14:37:00
Press release: Joint leader of unite calls on Labour to change direction2 Jun 2008In the wake of the Crewe catastrophe, Derek Simpson, joint general secretary of Unite, will warn that: "It is not the differences between Gordon Brown and Tony Blair that are the problem, it is the similarities."Speaking at the union's industrial conferences in Brighton this week, Mr Simpson will call for 'New Labour' to be consigned to the history books, as the union opens up a new front to change the policies of the Labour government to show the electorate that only Labour can deal with inequality, housing shortages, rising fuel costs and the health service.A windfall tax on the billion pound profits of oil companies would redefine Gordon Brown's premiership and win back votes for Labour.Mr Simpson will tell delegates: "For years the labour movement held its breath expecting, hoping, for change after the departure of Tony Blair. While we went blue from the lack of oxygen, the country has gone blu...
Illegals, Unions, TINA and National Sovereignty
2008-05-30 11:19:00
Excellent commenter Uncle Milton notes presciently about illegal immigration. Comments at the end:Uncle Milton: Unions didn't gain any real power in this country until the immigration doors were slammed shut in the 1920s. In the modern era (the last three decades) you don't have to look very far to see how cheap Latino labor has suppressed the wages of meat packers, janitors, construction workers, etc. When critiquing illegal immigration, I find it much more productive (and appealing or at least tolerated) by a wider audience when you bring up what it has done to wages and how employers have profited. Now with the globalization of computer technology many things can be done overseas: accounting, programming, tech support, architecture. In theory, this is done for lower costs, but I know multiple cases were companies brought labor back to the US.We hear all the time about how the US isn't producing enough engineers. What you don't hear as much is that the average engineer only st...

Bahamas Trade Unions Stand Divided
2008-05-24 01:25:00
Unions Still Divided as Labour Day Approaches: By TOSHEENA ROBINSON-BLAIR - Nassau, Bahamas: While nixing the idea that the country?s two umbrella unions would finally unite to stage one major Labour Day march, leaders affiliated with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) unveiled plans on Thursday for their annual Labour Day parade, which is expected to be held under the theme, "The struggle for unity continues. Then, now, forever." As Labour Day approaches, the country?s largest trade union, the Bahamas Hotel Catering and Allied Workers Union, continues to be embroiled in bitter infighting, and differences between the TUC and the National Congress of Trade Unions will apparently prevent them from joining forces on June 6 as originally planned. According to TUC President Obie Ferguson, the lack of recognition for some trade unions in the country, the need for vacation and notice pay in the event a company goes bankrupt or relocates, and the enforcement of court judgments in worker...
