2008-04-04 01:15:00 One of Barack Obama?s senior advisers helped arrange public relations help for Trinity United Church as it grappled with tough coverage in the wake of the Jeremiah Wright controversy, according to a new report. Talking Points Memo reports that David Axelrod, Obama?s chief strategist, privately contacted Jim Terman, president of Chicago public relations firm Jasculca-Terman and Associates, after the church put out a call for help after Wright's remarks attracted a media firestorm. The firm specializes in crisis management. "I called Jim Terman and asked if they were interested in helping out and they followed up with the church," Axelrod said in an e-mailed statement to TPM. He added that the phone call was the extent of his assistance. Terman confirmed to the Web site that the firm is now doing pro bono work for the church. How very odd. Let's leave aside whether intolerating intolerance is still intolerance. Is the ad true? Do other churches turn people away? Do they "eject" sinners from their churches? Of course not! I think most traditional churches would love to have even the worst sinners attend their services. After all, most churches, protestant or Catholic, have prison ministries and murder is way up there. The difference is that traditional or "conservative" churches want the imperfect (everybody, no?) to improve their behavior according to Christ's goals for us- to overcome our sinful nature. Apparently the Chicago based church that Obama goes to has caused some controversy in the past and may become a thorn in the presumptive Democratic Nominees side as things move forward. I spent a bit of time googling and researching the Trinity United Church of Christ or TUCC if you will. One of the first sites that came up other than the TUCC site itself was Snopes.com the "urban legend" reference site. I have become increasingly skeptical of Snopes.com when it comes to political questions and I think this one finally put me over the edge. But let's back up here for a second. 2007-06-23 22:46:00 June 23, 2007 - The United Church of Christ General Synod has adopted a balanced resolution regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, reversing the anti-Israel and anti-peace divestment resolution of a previous Synod. This move is similar to the change adopted earlier by Presbyterian Church USA, reversing their own anti-Israel resolution. The most important parts of this resolution are commitment to a two state peaceful solution, rather than liquidation of Israel, commitment to a balanced approach to the causes and history of the conflict, and a call for an end to incitement and violence.However, we can surmise that as in the case of PC-USA, the UCC resolution will be challenged again and again by anti-Israel forces within the church.It has rarely been so clear as it is here that those who insist on boycotting Israel are taking an immoral stance that is against peace and against human rights.
