This Day In History - Luna 5 was an unmanned Soviet spacecraft designed
2008-05-13 21:59:00
Luna 5 was an unmanned Soviet spacecraft designed to continue investigations of a lunar soft landing. On May 10, the spacecraft began spinning around its main axis due to a problem in a flotation gyroscope in the I-100 guidance system unit. An attempt to fire the main engine failed because of a ground control error, ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "This Day In History - Luna 5 was an unmanned Soviet spacecraft designed", url: "http://top-dollar-website.com/-articles/this-day-in-history-lu-na-5-was-an-unmanned-soviet-spa-cecraft-designed.html" });

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Mark Robotic First For British Antarctic Survey
2008-03-28 05:20:00
Scientists at British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in collaboration with the Technical University of Braunschweig (TUBS), Germany have completed the first ever series of flights by autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Antarcticaà„€ This is the first time that unpiloted UAVs have been used in the Antarctic and the successful flights open up a major new technique for gathering scientific data in the harshest and remotest environment on Earth.Dr Phil Anderson of BAS says, "This is a huge technological achievement for BAS and TUBS. Apart from take-off and landing, when the UAVs are controlled by radio, the aircraft are completely autonomous, flying on their own according to a pre-programmed flight plan. Each flight lasts for 40 minutes, covering around 45 km and taking 100 measurements a second, so waiting for the UAV to return safely after its research mission was very exciting. Seeing the first UAV come back successfully was a real heart-in-the-mouth moment."Following trials during...

Crusher will be used by the Army and is built by Mellon University Robotics Engineering Center.Crusher is expected to influence future unmanned ground vehicles for the Future Combat System, the Army's modernization program. Among other goals, it's supposed to demonstrate autonomous navigation (thus building on similar DARPA goals for the Grand Challenge).I don't like to see one of there robots on streets.
Sacramento Police Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Program Gaining Altitude
2008-02-07 12:05:00
  If you are in the Sacramento area in the near future you may be looking up wondering what that buzzing noise is. Sacramento will be getting a new eye in the sky to help out law enforcement. Not sure how well it will be received, I can just imagine this thing crashing into a crowd of people buying a hot dog at an outdoor vendor. "The Sacramento, Calif., Police Department announced its Urban Unmanned Aerial (UAV) Vehicle Program and showed off its unique homegrown version of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle at the Versadex Conference in downtown Sacramento. The mini airplane on display was one of two aircraft in the development stage designed to enhance the department’s existing airborne technology program. The current program consists of two helicopters with video downlink communications that stream video to mobile data terminals in police patrol cars and to mobile command vehicles."   Via: Robot Gossip

Boeing Achieves First Submerged Unmanned Undersea Vehicle Recovery by a Sub
2007-11-27 03:46:00
Slashdot It!The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has successfully demonstrated for the first time that an unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) can be recovered by an underway submerged submarine, opening up new possibilities for advanced naval operations.During recent tests, a U.S. Navy attack submarine launched the AN/BLQ-11 UUV from one of its torpedo tubes. The vehicle, formerly called the Long-term Mine Reconnaissance System (LMRS), then returned to the vessel, where the system's robotic arm retrieved it into the submarine. "With this recent success, Boeing has taken another important step in UUV development by demonstrating that the unmanned vehicle can return to the submarine and be recovered by a robotic arm," said Dan Jones, director of Boeing Advanced Information Systems, a division of Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems. "This milestone represents a critical next step for the U.S. Navy and opens the door for a whole new set of advanced submarine missions."The at-sea UUV tests follo...

Navy gears up for unmanned combat aircraft

Navy gears up for unmanned combat aircraftPosted Aug 4th 2007 11:51AM by Darren Murph While the idea of an autonomous flying military bot is far from new, the US Navy has taken a first step toward "developing an unmanned combat aircraft that some advocates say could compete with Lockheed Martin's F-35 joint strike fighter." Northrop Grumman was awarded a $636 million contract to design, build, and fly an Unmanned Combat Air System "that would operate from the decks of the Navy's giant nuclear-powered aircraft carriers," and if things goes as planned, we could see the gunners join our forces "within 10 to 15 years." And considering that we're already deploying land-based mechanical soldiers to fire our weapons, we'd say the full-fledged robotic army is certainly closing in.source : engadget.com

Now founders of a helicopter manufacturer in New Zealand have launched their new project that aimed to establish a self funding aviation medivac and rescue system for the high altitude regions in Nepal. Everest Rescue Trust has a challenge in their mind with the new innovation, design and technology to challenge the science of aviation at extreme altitude and conquer new frontiers on Mt Everest and in Nepal. This UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) code name Alpine Wasp designed by TGR Helicopter will serve all the mountaineers and also any other high altitude medical emergency in Nepal. They also except that with this project they will achieve a lot of useful things such as attract more visitors to Nepal where it will create more job opportunities and also to maximize the potential for pushing the boundaries of long ...
