2009-06-23 16:25:00
Photo Credit: thegeneration via Flickr If you work downtown then you've probably had the chance to catch the Farmer's Markets at Prudential, Federal, Sears Tower and Daley Plazas....but now we've got some new Farmer's Market's up north!   Just this past week the inaugural Andersonville Farmer's Market kicked off at Clark & Berwyn to a roaring success as well as the seasons first Green Market in Edgewater.   Unlike most Farmer's Markets that occur during "business hours" when you're at work, the new Market in Andersonville is taking place from 4-8PM on Wednesdays.  Giving you plenty of time to get home from work, head on over and grab some delectable delicacies and make some dinner....
Re-acculturation Up North
2008-06-01 05:58:00
Last week, I was able to spend a few days and nights with my family in the Birchwood area (BirchwoodWI.com, Birchwood Area Chamber of Commerce, AnythingWisconsin.com, Wikipedia). We stayed at Janetski's Big Chetac Resort on Big Chetac Lake. We had nice, sunny weather for the entire time we were up there--however, I did have to adjust to the temperature a bit. In Thailand, this would be considered winter!~a view of Big Chetac Lake from our cabin~~ditto~From our cabin, we were able to make a short--30 minute--drive north to Hayward (Hayward Area Chamber of Commerce, HaywardWI.com, HaywardLakes.com, Wikipedia). While in Hayward, we spent our time on Main St. checking out all of the different gift and candy shops. Many of the businesses have been housed on this drag of 2-story buildings for a long time~Grey's Barber Shop since 1892~~mom and I taking a rest~~Tremblay's Sweet Shop has world famous fudge~~been serving candies since 1963~~a couple of workers making fudge in the back~~a f...
A Little Something From Up North
2008-05-24 23:39:00
Flakeouts and hangovers had me surfing solo this morning. So, for those who missed it, here are a few pics I took after the tide had pretty much shut things down. Should tell you how good it was before......Zuma looked amazing on the way back, too.

Buchholz Getting Hit Up North; Blue Jays Led Sox 4-2
2008-04-05 15:54:00
Clay Buchholz already has a no-hitter under his belt from 2007, but he is not having such luck today in Toronto. It's the top of the 6th, and the Red Sox young hurler has given up 3 runs on 6 hits while walking 2 in just 5 innings. His 7 K's proves he has the ability to be a shutdown pitcher, and help fantasy teams in that category. Expect this start to get the kinks out for Buchholz, as I expect him to have a big year for Beantown in 2008. IN PROGRESS: TOP 6th BOS 4 TOR 2
Trying to contact ...... the Up North Combine
2008-03-26 07:34:00
Received an email from Dave Snowdon the other day.Dave is trying to contact fellow Up North Combine members for a possible reunion. He writes:We were based in Thorney Close, Sunderland & played around the Sunderland - Durham - Newcastle area from approx 1965 to 1968. We were originally called The Klik, but changed our name as there were a few other bands with variations on the same name. We played a lot of the WMClubs, but later progressed to Student Union gigs & Night Clubs and added a keyboard player & main vocalist.Ive not managed to trace any of the band members & would be very grateful if you could mention the band in your news & blogs, so that I can hopefully trace some of the former members - and maybe even have a reunion! From left to right - Dave Snowdon (me) on lead guitar/vocals, Bill Johnson on bass & lead vocals, Mick Harrison on drums & Jimmy Scott on rhythm guitar I now live in Gloucestershire and have recently made contact with Roger Smith,...
Up North: Catmon
2008-03-14 06:09:00
Last year, I was invited to be part of a friend?s birthday celebration in Catmon. I disapproved of the idea without even an exact reason. A week after the party, a friend of mine told me about all the fun I had missed and I quite clearly regretted not being there with them. Anyway, ...

Peak Foliage is Over Up North But Still Available South and West VT
2007-10-24 03:43:00
The last two days were beautiful with warm temperatures and clear skies. Today was the opposite with rain and wind all day long. Yesterday we still had a lot of colorful leaves on the trees in north central VT except along the high ridge lines. Today many of those leaves got knocked off. However, I made a trip to Burlington this afternoon and, while the spectacular scenery is gone, there still many spots of bright yellow, gold and orange on the hillsides. This has been the best and longest lasting fall foliage season we have seen in the seven years we have lived in Vermont. I've never seen so many red trees as I did this year. One of our guests drove up to Lake Willoughby a couple of weeks ago and was still stunned and shaking his head the next day as he told us about a huge mountainside that was mostly red. He had never seen anything like it and could not even imagine such a thing if he had not seen it himself. There will be areas of southern Vermont that are at peak now, especia...

Up North
2007-10-03 09:33:00
Tuesday was a busy day. I had an early flight up to Auckland to do some infrastructure upgrades to one of the national offices, and hoped the new SAN switches I'd shipped on Friday had already made it - otherwise it was going to be a short trip. Luckily, they arrived about 15 mins before we did!The Air New Zealand flight out was fine, bit bumpy in parts but quite tame in comparison to others I've seen! The weather was good though, sun was out and it was about 13C. After a couple of hours of unracking the 1st switch, racking and configuring the replacement it was time for lunch. We headed off in one of the company pool cars to good old McDonald's and took in some fresh air playing Pirate Mini Golf.Back at the office, the 2nd switch was racked and setup without a hitch, and then it was off to the airport for some food before the night time flight home. The weather turned just before we left, and the storm clouds and rain set in.I can honestly say that the noodle bar at Auckland airp...
Could The U.S Housing Market Crisis Happen Up North?
2007-09-10 07:53:00
Two articles today had interesting view points:"Here at home(Canada), only about 5% of mortgages are of the sub prime variety (I prefer the more explanatory, "sub credit-worthy"). Experts insist the crisis is simply not as great a threat to Canada. But it's still a threat.Canadian high-ratio mortgages - loans where the purchaser has only made a down- payment of 20% or less of the purchase price - have to be insured for default by the government-backed Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. or one of the private companies that perform this service. The insurance covers the lenders' losses, not the borrowers', which, to say the least, is an important distinction.Using that backup, some lenders, even the big banks, approve mortgages with zero down. In addition, an alarming number of folks almost routinely increase the value of those loans in lockstep with the increasing price of their properties. Instead of basing the maximum loan value on a borrowers' ability to repay, there seems to b...
I have arrived up north!
2007-08-21 08:42:00
Moving was not as difficult as I thought it would be. Of course, I was shocked to find out that my new place is on the 3rd floor of a house, rather than the first floor, and there’s no elevator! I know now that I’ll get some exercise for sure, now! My sister and ...

Up North is Heaven
2007-05-06 15:27:00
Here in Goa, close to 3 weeks since i let me gypsy heart find familiar ground in new territory. 45 kilometres from North Goa, here in Colva sweating it out for the winter. Once winter is here, there will be no looking back ! All the hard earned money shall be invested in the pursuit of enlightenment. What could be a better way to find yourself, yet again, through the trance~dance phenomena ?Life cruising through the by-lanes in Anjuna and Vagator with the chill in the air piercing through the heavily beaten ear drums ( Thank you Lord for all the Madness we cherish )... I could go around in circles forever, yet find something new each time. The sound of an Enfield revving it's way towards you now is a flash of energy: The flying hippy... he is gone ...Everyone seems to come to Goa to break free from the routine they are caught in, however there are some who stay back, because they've realized that the city life and the concrete was not how it was intended to be. We as humans have m...

Driving up north to Pagudpud
2007-03-12 14:35:00
Our long drive up north began yesterday afternoon. We left San Fernando, Pampanga at about 2 p.m. (it was my grandmother's birthday celebration so we had lunch there) and reached San Fernando, La Union at about 6 p.m. We passed by the Ma-cho Temple so that Jiajin could see a local Taoist temple. It was closed when we got there so we were only able to go around the grounds and enjoy the San Fernando Bay sunset from the place which was high on top of a hill. From San Fernando, it was another long drive to Candon, Ilocos Sur where we had dinner. It is a popular stopover because of its local calamay, which are flat like pancakes and covered with a clear celophane. There are two kinds, one made with brown sugar and the other with white sugar. Another product sold there is the Ilocos chichacorn. It took another 45 minutes or so before we finally arrived in Vigan where we decided to stay for the night. Hotels in the heritage area are quite pricey. But after walking around, we found the Viga...
I HATE Living Up North
2007-03-09 21:45:02
Man…I cannot wait till I move! I hate living up here! It stays too damn cold and it is only nice for maybe 3-4 months. I mean it starts getting cold towards the end of September and then it continues to get cold and stay cold from October-March. It doesn’t start to warm up a bit until the end of April, but May is the month when the nice weather actually begins. Then June, July, August and the first weeks of September are nice. The air is too filthy and polluted up here and everyone who lives up here in this state have the worst attitudes on the face of the planet! Everyone is so cold hearted and harsh. I hate it. The only way to survive living up north is to be just as mean because when I used to friendly, people would walk all over me, pick fights with me and be mean because they took my niceness for a weakness. I can’t wait to get away from these people and move down south where the weather is actually as nice as the attitudes of the people. I’m also tired ...

A casualty of our Up North winter
0000-00-00 00:00:00

Up North Mommy movie review: Changeling
