Megan McArdle on Upstate & Western New York
2008-11-13 05:50:00
As a spinoff from her discussion about the bailout of the big 3, McArdle recounts the hard fall of Rochester's Kodak, and writes this about her mother's native upstate: Syracuse is slightly more fortunate, because it wasn't so heavily dependent on one firm. Nonetheless, its population now stands at ...
Windmills split upstate NY town and families
2008-08-16 20:46:00
Windmills split upstate NY town and families LOWVILLE, N.Y. - “Listen,” John Yancey says, leaning against his truck in a field outside his home. The rhythmic whoosh, whoosh, whoosh of wind turbines echoes through the air. Sleek and white, their long propeller blades rotate in formation, like some otherworldly dance of spindly-armed aliens swaying across ...
Upstate New York is Beautiful
2008-05-19 17:49:00
Upstate New York is BeautifulI grew up in a really beautiful place: Upstate New York in the United States of America. Orchards, fields, and a dark blue sky stretch out as far as the horizon . . . without the slightest vestige of a city or drudgery and frustration of city life. I grew up far out in the countryside, and long lines of sight and clean fresh air have been the rule of my upbringing. I enjoy this environment, and feel most comfortable when I am in places similar to it. I like to look out for miles across agricultural fields and watch the tractors pass over the soil and into the night. This is my home, and I have always known that Upstate New York is beautiful.--------------Wade from Vagabond Journey.com in Upstate New York- May 19, 2008Song of the Open Road -- Travel Photos --------------The view from my homelandWhen I travel I tell people that I am from New York, and they take me for a city dweller. As I sit in my parental home now looking out the window, ...

Countertop Woes And NYC Home Depot Versus Upstate Home Depot
2007-10-26 16:19:00
Countertop shopping makes me…uneasy. They are so frikken expensive…and I’m afraid to make the wrong decision. So, I’ve had my house for, oh, five years…and still have the countertops that the previous owner installed…that I hate. It’s probably the one thing I hate most in the house. Perhaps the only thing that really makes me cringe – and that’s from day one even when the house was wall-to-wall wallpaper! Anyhoo, we’ll get back to the countertops later. Slide One:My bulletin board at work has that calico corners fabric that I love that isn’t appropriate for furniture but they taunt me with it ON a chair. A picture of a nautically upholstered chair with Ralph Lauren fabric, a pretty chair in striped Lee Jofa fabric and last but not least…an un-working magic wand. While I was in LA last week I stopped by the LeSportsac store and picked up this groovy backpack. I love the chicks! They make me giggle. Yesterday, picked MORE tomatoes from the garden. Sure, they wo...

Ugly in the Upstate update
2007-09-27 22:35:00
It’s been more than a month since neighboring GOP groups went to war in the Upstate, and a lot has happened since. John Boyanoski wrote Thursday that the e-mail battle has been heating up of late, with perennial bad boy Rick Beltram — the leader of the Spartanburg County “Socs” — targeting the Greenville ...

2007-08-31 00:18:00
Rule No. 1 when trying to win the South Carolina primary as a Republican presidential candidate: If you do nothing else, you MUST campaign in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties. Even John Cox knows that. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) Thursday released a schedule for his “Three-State Campaign Tour,” during which he plans to announce his intention to run for ...

Islamberg: a compound of radicalism in upstate New York
2007-05-17 15:46:00
A disturbing story that's been virtually ignored by the MSM, Islamberg is a compound in the Catskill Mountains of New York where there appears to be terrorist practices being conducted. There's quite a bit of information about it available on the web, and it's something that certainly needs to be brought to full light.Just recently, the Canada Free Press reported that a blogger received a death threat for writing about the subject. I hope he's getting proper protection, and that the police are investigating, because this is very serious, as is the case of Islamberg itself.(via SliwaNews.)
Unshackle Upstate
2007-03-13 00:00:00
By now, you probably saw this billboard somewhere around town: “We want our economy moving, not our people”. That’s the slogan for “Unshackle Upstate“, which is a group made up mostly of upstate chambers of commerce that have dedicated themselves to work together to accomplish one major goal: a rebound of economic development ...
Upstate Caucus
2007-03-12 00:00:00
If, as they say, there is strength in numbers, this would appear to be a no-brainer. Robin Schimminger (D-Kenmore) mentions that it might hurt, rather than help, if there was no unanimity among the members of the caucus. I think that certain things like economic development, tax relief, Medicaid reform, and others, are ...

State of Upstate
2007-01-28 05:16:03
The York Staters are toying with the whole “upstate secedes” notion, (a notion which, on balance, hurts upstate more than it helps it). But they’re soliciting ideas for an upstate flag. Check it out here. If Canada can have a maple leaf, certainly we should have a snowflake or something?
Happy Upstate Cities
2007-01-04 16:51:05
The Albany-Utica-Syracuse-Rochester--Buffalo axis was evidently quite pleased with what it heard during yesterday’s State of the State address: Mr. Brown, who just started his second year as mayor of Buffalo, rose to his feet several times during Mr. Spitzer?s address. So did Mayors Gerald D. Jennings of Albany and Matthew J. Driscoll of Syracuse, who [...]
Spitzer?s Upstate Agenda
2007-01-03 16:49:01
While posting is relatively light, read about Spitzer’s plan to revive the upstate economy, including: a “significant” increase in state aid to upstate cities, towns and school districts Puts me in the mind of a gold-plated, diamond-encrusted band-aid to stanch the bleeding from a gaping wound. Involving a major artery. reforming the operation of government to [...]
Wierd Creationist Museum in Upstate NY
2006-12-22 04:26:01
I’m not even sure how to tag this post, but I thought it appropriate to acknowledge the wacko creationists, working on their very own museum, here in upstate New York. The Lost World Museum is just NW of Syracuse NY (in Phoenix, NY), and describes itself as: The mission of the Lost World Museum is to present the greatest evidence ever assembled which validates the creation account found in the book of Genesis. We will explore past archeological finds and perhaps offer an alternative explanation as we present: the Giants of the pre-flood world, the remnants of ancient technology, the existence of Noah?s Ark, evidence for a worldwide flood, anomalous fossils and out of place artifacts. These subjects will be the core topics together other resources that will help answer that age-old question: ?Is it Apes, Aliens or Adam?? (more…)
