How Urban Equities saved me from Chicago real estate nightmares
2009-10-22 22:37:00
Me sitting on the front porch of my Missouri apartment in 2002 I've lived in three states within the past decade during my university years. I've gone from dorms to off-campus apartments to the south side of Chicago to the north side of Chicago, and I've had my fair share of real estate company tales.   In Missouri, my real estate company was okay, but they wanted to charge me for utility issues that had nothing to do with me and everything to do with the building being old. But the rent in Jefferson City, Missouri (Lincoln University is my alma mater) was $225 for a one-bedroom apartment in a beautiful neighborhood. No sane person is going to pass that up,...
Section 8: helping the poor, or dispersing urban crime?
2009-10-20 08:48:00
One of the things I like about blogging is the opportunity to engage with other people who have perspectives outside law enforcement.  One of the people I talk with regularly is Megan Cottrell, who writes about public housing issues at One Story Up. Ms. Cottrell recently sent me links to a couple of NPR features:Mixed Results on Mixed-Income Chicago Public HousingChicago Public Housing Plan Marks 10 YearsMegan said that she was building a post around a comment she saw at the NPR site, and asked what I thought about it.  Here's her post:NIMBY: if not in your backyard, then whose? And here's the quote she opens with:EJS, Jackson Park Highlands // Monday, October 05, 2009 @ 11:32 AM Mixed - Income...

80% Urban Indians Plan Holidays Via Travel Portals – Are The Best Day
2009-08-31 07:28:00
When was the last time you booked a ticket using one of the online travel portals like MakeMyTrip or Yatra? Even if you think that was long time back, chances are high that you used them at least to check on the prices or ticket availability. That’s because an overwhelming majority of urban Indians do it that way. A new study by Nielsen shows that nearly 80 percent of Indians plan their holidays using online travel portals. “Indians” is a broad generalization here, because the study covered 842 metro, Internet-savvy Indians who had traveled by air in the past one year. I s**k at statistics, yet I think it is fair to say that this is a very small sample that just accounts for a small minority of the entire sample set. Nevertheless, assuming that we are only talking about metropolitan Internet-savvy people, the study still throws numbers of high significance. Here are some more numbers from the study – 77% of those surveyed had used the travel portals for airl...

Urban Chicken Coops on City Tour
2009-08-26 13:00:00
Have you ever considered raising chickens in your urban backyard? I have, and, fortunately, it’s allowable where I live. I really like the idea of having fresh eggs right outside the door. And, because of my vegetable garden, it would be great to have more manure close by. Then there’s the added bonus of turning ...
Urban Outfitters Introduces A Custom Bike Shop
2009-08-23 05:20:00
As if Urban Outfitters isn't already well on its way to total global domination (within all the limits of human welfare standards and eco-friendly principles of course), they've introduced a new line of products to further expand their business, and these are accessories that can be coordinated with your outfit but won't necessarily be worn out to a dinner party.
Urban Meyer Won't Be Joining The Zooker Fan Club Anytime Soon
2009-08-21 23:32:00
In the "sure to make waves" department, Florida head coach Urban Meyer was quoted today as criticizing the atmosphere around the Gators' football program under the previous coach, namely current Illini head man Ron Zook.  Meyer told David Jones of Florida Today about inheriting an "unbelievable" situation where "you don't win many games, but you beat up freshmen", and went into a great amount of detail about the way underclassmen were treated in the locker room....

Urban Bees at Chicago Garden
2009-08-07 23:31:00
Since attending the urban beekeeping lecture I've been paying more attention to the bees in my garden. I've noticed there have been less honeybees in my garden this year. Maybe there is something to the whole CCD thing. But the news hasn't been all bad. With honeybees, for the most part, absent from the garden it has freed me up some time to observe other urban bees. The photo above is of a bumblebee on the popular annual flower, Zinnia. Not being an entomologist if you know the scientific name for any of these bees feel free to ID these bees in the comments section. ...
Wood Street Urban Farm in Englewood
2009-08-06 20:27:00
The Wood Street Urban Farm is a USDA Certified organic production farm in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. It was started in 1992 by Les Brown, Director of Policy for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, who passed away in 2005, as a training program for the homeless and jobless. Today, the Wood Street Urban Farm employs 30 part-time workers, including ex-offenders, and provides job training while helping to alleviate the food desert problem in the area. They estimated they'd grow about 10,000 lbs of produce this year on just 2/3 of an acre. You can see a photo gallery at the Sun-Times website and a segment from CLTV below that profiles the urban farm.   What are they growing in Chicago...
Urban Foraging
2009-07-24 23:56:00
Recently while grocery shopping I came across a homeless man who was foraging, for lack of a better term, in the produce section of the grocery store. Soon I was following the man as he walked around and ate, heartily, from the displays of fruits and vegetables. Other people in the store didn't register him and those that did, recoiled in disgust at his antics. After what seemed like an eternity I was watching him evade the store's security who must have been summoned by an unhappy customer and eventually get taken down....

Sea Of Shoes for Urban Outfitters
2009-06-25 20:51:00
So, I recently read on Sea of Shoes that Jane Aldridge has a capsule shoe collection coming out with Urban Outfitters. A number of the comments on her post were rather negative -- calling her an "advertising opportunity" and her designs "knock-offs". I am not going to deny that she is indeed a great marketing opportunity for a conglomerate like UO, nor am I going to deny the obvious influences of Margiela and Ann Demeuelemeester in her designs, but can we just step aside for a second and look at things the way they are? First of all, the girl is a mere 17 years old. Yes, she comes from an affluent family. Yes, her mother is an experienced style maven (with...
Turnaround for Urban Outfitters (URBN)?
2009-06-23 06:00:00
"Stocks have struggled lately; still, I continue to see opportunities," says Mark Skousen. In The Turnaround Alert, he says, "I especially like Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ: URBN)." "Urban Outfitters, the apparel retailer, after it beat Wall Street analysts’ estimates. Two years ago, the stock was selling for $37 a share."But today, it's selling for nearly half that. During the deep recession, retailers have seen sales drop as consumers cut back on spending for clothing and other discretionary purchases. As a result, retail apparel stocks fell sharply. "Granted, net income for Urban Outfitters declined 28% on revenues of $1.8 billion, but overall sales fell only 2% for the year. Urban’s brands have held up well compared to their competition (Abercrombie & Fitch, GAP, etc.)."Analysts think that Urban did better than expected because of better margins in its 300 stores, suggesting that the company is controlli...

Urban Delivery Services Could Be Aided By New CarGo

The recent drive to find a more efficient means of urban delivery has spawned many interesting and sometimes awful concept vehicles. The title of this article says it all, first, it’s always cool to see NASCAR turn to country music for someone to rock the prerace Daytona 500 party, last year, they had Brooks & Dunn, this year it was Keith Urban. I’ve got to say that I’ve been a country music fan for a long time and I’ve really gotten into it in 2005 when I was introduced to Carrie Underwood’s music, so to see NASCAR continue that with Keith Urban on stage was good. Nice set by Keith Urban, I believe I heard three songs from him, I might consider getting a couple of those songs.
