URINARY RETENTION
2008-05-09 10:06:00
Inability to void may develop abruptly, but is usually preceded by a history of diminished size and force of the urinary system, hesitancy, nocturnal urination, and dribbling. Many of these individuals are older men, having developed gradual prostate enlargement, but scarring and stricture from infection in the urinary tract can also produce these symptoms. One of the most important ways of relieving these conditions, short of actual surgical cure, is the use of the urinary catheter. Unless the obstruction is severe this soft, flexible tube with a rounded end can be passed successfully into the bladder in most people. The catheter should be sterilized, the opening of the urethra (meatus) cleansed carefully with antiseptic solution, and with appropriate lubrication the catheter passed gently into the bladder. Usually relief is obtained and this technique is easily learned at home thus allowing either for the necessary time to seek medical care or a chronic relief in older patients dee...
URINARY INFECTION
2008-05-05 09:45:00
Bacterial infections of the urinary tract are extremely common. Some are also notoriously resistant to treatment and thus likely to reoccur. Yet the majority of persons with urinary tract infections are unaware of it. On other occasions, infections take the form of an acute disease usually with characteristic symptoms. The commonest symptoms are pain on urination, urinary frequency, and a strong urge to void. More serious infections may produce fever, pain in the bladder region, or over the kidneys. Many different causes can produce infection. The commonest of these come from the group of gram negative bacteria (such as E. coli) inhabiting the digestive tract. Cultures of the urine can usually pinpoint the exact offender. Most of the time these coliform bacteria gain access to the bladder through the urethra. Under normal circumstances the urine in the bladder is sterile and large numbers of bacteria can be cleared rapidly in both humans and animals. Slight physiologic alterations, h...
URINARY STONES
2008-05-04 09:44:00
Stones in the kidney or ureters may occur at any age, but are more common in the third and fourth decades. These calculi may be single or multiple, firmly lodged or free. Kidney stones often cause pain, produce blood in the urine, and symptoms of vague abdominal distress. Occasionally, even when large, stones may occur without symptoms, while causing serious andinsidious kidney damage.Characteristically, as mentioned above, renal calculi cause severe, sharp flank pain, which is often acute in onset and present intermittently. A small stone being passed in the ureter creates painful colic and the patient usually moves about restlessly, vainly seeking relief. Blood is frequently present in the urine, but at times requires the microscope for its detection. Physical findings may be entirely normal, although tenderness, muscle spasm, or even a lump may be felt in the location. It is important to search for the original cause of the stone, then attempt to correct it. Most stones after blad...

What Cause the Uncontrollable Urinating or Urinary Incontinence
2008-02-17 10:41:00
These are conditions which may caused the urinary incontinence:Bladder infection. Signs of disease such as pain to urinate, often going to the toilet and also could be presence of blood in urine. Anticholinergic Agents For Urinary Incontinence
2008-02-09 11:22:00
Drugs with a combination of anticholinergic and antispasmodic properties, such as oxybutynin chloride and dicyclomine hydrochloride, are among the most widely used agents. Anticholinergic/antispasmodic agents improve urge incontinence by increasing the volume attained before detrusor contraction, decreasing the strength of bladder contractions, and increasing maximal bladder capacity. However, these agents are not able to suppress detrusor contraction or to increase the time between the perceived need to void and detrusor contraction (”warning time”). Therefore, these medications should be used in combination with behavioral interventions. Tolterodine (Detrol) is a recent addition to the anticholinergic class of agents. Three trials comparing tolterodine 1 to 2 mg bid to oxybutynin 5 mg tid found tolterodine to be equally effective as measured by mean number of voids per day and mean number of incontinence episodes per day. Tolterodine exhibits greater selectivity for bl...
Physical Examination For Urinary Incontinence
2008-02-08 02:16:00
A general physical examination should be performed to detect conditions that could contribute incontinence such as edema, arthritis, dementia, neurologic disorders. Special attention should be paid to the rectal examination for perineal sensation, sphincter tone, and rectal mass. Pelvic examination should assess for vaginal atrophy or pelvic prolapse (cystocele, urethrocele, rectocele). Direct observation to detect stress incontinence via the cough stress test can be performed by having the patient cough vigorously while being observed for urine loss from the urethra. This test should preferably be done with the patient’s bladder full, in either the lithotomy position or, if necessary, while standing. Postvoid residual volume should be measured within 5 to 10 min after the patient voids in a comfortable and private setting. The volume can be determined either by inserting a catheter to drain the residual urine or by using pelvic ultrasound to assess bladder volume. Portable ul...

Urinary dysfunction troubles men most after prostate removal
2008-02-01 12:51:00
While most men who have their prostate removed to cure prostate cancer cite sexual dysfunction as the most common side effect after surgery, a University of Florida researcher has now discovered that urinary dysfunction troubles such patients most.   Writing in the journal Urologic Nursing, the researchers have even revealed that many patients are not emotionally prepared to face such complications.   The study findings highlight the need for health-care practitioners to educate their patients about the physical and psychological effects that the surgery may have on their everyday lives.   “The effects of this treatment are quite immediate and can lead to depression and frustration,” said lead author of the study, Bryan Weber, an assistant professor in the UF College of Nursing.   “After an initial diagnosis of prostate cancer, men may be so focused on eradicating the disease that they don’t realize the effects the treatment will have o...

2007-12-24 10:08:00
Three days ago I get the stone that came out when I urinate in the morning. I felt relax and active. What a relief after a week of not urinating well. The pain that I felt that I could concentrate with my job is now okay. My UTI started in 1992 and sometimes I experience it but sometimes I don't feel it. So lately I experience it mostly until I undergo an x-ray and ultra sound which they discovered that I have three little stones in my kidneys and the doctor advice me to drink medicine so they will be dissolved.I drink those drugs and some of the stones went out and lately the hospital told me that they are gone. I drank plenty of water and even drink herbal tea which is Banaba. I don't know which medicines did help me but I suspected that they all help my problem. Right now I stop drinking softdrinks and drink plenty of water everyday.

Maroon Canned Goo Good for Urinary Tract Too
2007-11-14 19:21:00
I thought this would be a good to post on, since Thanksgiving is just around the corner. At the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, a group of researchers from Worcester Polytechnical Institute released information on the effects cranberries on E. Coli. They found that tannins found only in cranberries prevent E. Coli bacteria from attaching to cells within the human body, a necessary step for E. Coli to cause infection.Cranberry prevents infection in a couple of ways. Cranberry juice creates a barrier that keeps the bacteria away from urinary tract lining and causes the tendrils on the bacteria to shrivel, making it harder for the bacteria to attach itself. To further demonstrate the effect of cranberry on E. Coli, bacteria grown in cranberry juice cannot produce biofilm, which is needed for infection.Early results show that the more cranberry products you consume, the stronger their effects are on E. Coli. So, make sure you get an extra serving of the maroon canned...

Urinary System
2007-07-16 23:18:00
The urinary system is the organ system that produces, stores, and eliminates urine. In humans it includes two kidneys, two ureters, the bladder, and the urethra. The analogous organ in invertebrates is the nephridium.KidneyTypically, every human has two kidneys. The kidneys are bean-shaped organs about the size of a bar of soap. The kidneys lie in the abdomen, posterior or retroperitoneal to the organs of digestion, around or just below the ribcage and close to the lumbar spine. The kidneys are surrounded by what is called peri-nephric fat, and situated on the superior pole of each kidney is an adrenal gland. The kidneys receive their blood supply of 1.25 L/min (25% of the cardiac output) from the renal arteries which are fed by the Abdominal aorta. This is important because the kidneys' main role is to filter water soluble waste products from the blood. The other attatchment of the kidneys are at their functional endpoints the ureters, which lies more medial and runs down to the t...
