Twitter Users To Get Voice Calling – Should SNS Officially Support Third
2009-09-18 12:36:00
Twitter has always been a playground for third party companies to integrate their services and thus enhance the user experience. Jajah, a VoIP provider has launched a service in beta which will allow twitter users to make free two mins call to other twitter users. How does the service work? Register for Jajah@call service To call a Twitter user just type “@call @username” – where “username” is someone’s Twitter ID Both the user should follow each other on Twitter and also have accounts at Jajah services. The service is free to use and is expected to work on any Twitter-enabled device, from PCs to smart phones. The call duration in current phase would be for just two minutes and the service being still in beta is available to very few users. The service would help in creating awareness for Jajah products at the same time facilitating twitter users to make short free calls from the twitter interface. Should SNS sites Officially s...

Facebook Crosses 300 Million Users, Makes Money And Also Introduces Protot
2009-09-16 12:39:00
Facebook today announced that its crossed 300 million users across the globe. It also stated in a press release to WATBlog that it has become cashflow positive last quarter even though they expected to achieve the same by 2010. Quite a landmark achievement if you ask us. Finally one can say that social networking is making money! 300 million users are a lot but what’s even more interesting is that its taken just about 300 facebook engineers to reach to that number also less than 4 years in time. Facebook in its release promises that this is just the beginning and there is lots more they plan to offer. We for starters they also announced Prototype which is simple words can be called as Facebook’s Labs (like google labs). So what is Facebook Prototype? Facebook Prototypes let facebook share the experimentation going on inside the walls of Facebook with the rest of the world. Users will be able to test any of the products and features facebook launches as Facebook Prototyp...

Some adware are called spyware because their functions are invasive: They consist of obtaining then ...
20 Million Broadband Users Will Take 5 Years While Govt Approves Broadband
2009-09-15 08:04:00
The Broadband Policy of 2004 stated that India would achieve 20 million broadband users by 2010. Now we are at the end of 2009 (almost) and the TRAI latest numbers suggest that broadband penetration in India has just about managed to reach 6.8 million subscribers! At this rate the target of 20 million broadband subscribers would be reached by 2014 so said Mr Manoj Kohli,Chairman, CII National Committee on Telecom and Broadband and CEO and Joint Managing Director of Bharti AirTel Ltd. Inspite of this slow growth the CII is aiming for 214 million connections by 2014 i.e. in the next 5 years. A tall ask if you ask us. The wire line infrastructure in India is certainly not equipped to provide this growth. What may give it the impetus is the upcoming wimax auctions which may lead to India being connected via Wimax. We have reported earlier on how 20% of the worlds wimax internet connections might be in India by 2012 and that could be the way broadband penetration could grow. There are a...

72% Mobile Internet Users Engage With Ads. Do These Stats Convey The True P
2009-09-14 14:30:00
Can advertisers expect a better engagement level with their target audience on the mobile phones than the wired internet? Possibly so, if a recent study by InMobi, a mobile advertising network is anything to go by. According to this new report, nearly three-fourth of the mobile internet users in India positively engage with the brands that advertise on the mobile phones! But be forewarned, this report is nowhere close to a scientific study. The advertising network surveyed 205 students from Mumbai IIT School of Management. 57% of the respondents had accessed Internet from their mobile phones. Of this 57%,  72.5% agreed to have engaged with the ads in some way or the other. 10% of them had called the advertiser for more info while 17.5% had gone ahead and made a purchase. I cannot digest these numbers for the simple reason that neither are they a diverse sample set nor is the sample set large enough. But it is worth discussing if engagement levels on the mobile phones are in fact b...

WordPress Users Must Upgrade

After reading Mashable’s post about WordPress Attack Underway: WordPress Users Must Upgrade [ALERT] I decided to upgrade immediately. There is a clever worm that registers as a user, makes itself a “hidden” Administrator and inserts hidden spam and malware into old posts. I am managing a
China Has 703 Million Cell Phone Users. The Middle Class Is Rising.
2009-09-06 04:28:00
703 million. (h/t Shanghaiist) Think about that for just a minute. That's about 2.5 times the population of the United States. More than three years ago (gosh, have we really been here that long??!!) I did a post on how China had hit 410 million cell phone users. In that post, I stated the following: I love this sort of hard number because to me it is a very accurate way to measure China's growth and increasing wealth, perhaps even more so than a more standard measure like per capita income, which can be easily manipulated and whose impact is heavily dependent on living costs. The way I see, it, if someone can afford a mobile phone, they are a legitimate potential buyer of Western products and a legitimate potential customer for Western retailers. The comments to that post (and some of our other posts) questioned the validity of the number. I recall someone saying that the number reflected the fact that many users had two phones. One for business and a "black phone" for ...

Nokia Ovi Mail Reaches 1 Million Users in Six Months
2009-08-13 06:55:00
In December 2008, Nokia launched Ovi Mail, a free email service targeted at the developing world where the internet penetration has been traditionally low. Also available on the web, Ovi mail’s core focus however has been on email access through mobile phones. The target audience – people with no PC and hence no means to access email. The strategy has clearly paid off with Nokia recently announcing the registration of its one millionth Ovi mail user. Of this number, over 65% are reported to have registered from a mobile device with a majority of the users coming from India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa. Though this announcement does indicate the importance of going mobile in order for companies to spread their market further in these developing economies, it is in no way a milestone. To put the ‘one million’ in perspective, it is an insignificant number compared to the 196 million handsets shipped by the Finnish giant in just the first half of ...

Orkut Asks Users to Stop Using IE 6: A Very Good Idea
2009-08-11 20:24:00
I don’t have IE 6 on my system so couldn’t really check on this bit, but there’s no reason to doubt Mashable anyway. So in an interesting move, Orkut greeted its visitors suggesting them to upgrade their existing IE 6 browser to something more modern. On Google’s part they did well to not just push Chrome but also IE 8 and Firefox, in fact it put IE 8 as the first choice for users to click on for a better browsing experience. Why this call for upgrade – well for most of us who read (and write at WATBlog) it’s really a no brainer, IE 6 is old and grumpy enough to not doesn’t display sites properly. It’s not just the speed or lack of tabs and apps though. Open any web stylesheet and you will find either a hack, or a patch for IE 6. In other words it makes matters difficult for web designers and developers to experiment on the web without having to make special accommodations for an old browser. Orkut has predominant usage in India and B...

Unsecured Database and Users Log
2009-07-31 15:46:00
When Data Entry or Editing actions are performed on important Tables in Databases a Time-Stamp with User Name is normally saved on each record to mark that event. This is done through the Form's Before Update Event Procedure. A sample procedure is given below:Private Sub Form_BeforeUpdate(Cancel As Integer) Me![EditedBy] = CurrentUser Me![EditedDt] = NowEnd SubThese fields will be added to the Data Entry/Editing Form from the Table but will be kept hidden or disabled to prevent from manual changes. The familiar function =Now() gives the Date/Time Stamp value and the CurrentUser built-in function provides the User's Name from the current instance of the database opened in User's Workstation. We are focusing on the usage of CurrentUser function. The CurrentUser function can return the User Name value correctly from a secured database (from a database that is implemented with Microsoft Access Security features) shared on a Network. Twitter Targets 1 Billion Users by 2013
2009-07-16 11:00:00
We’ve been commenting about Twitter for quite a while. Twitter is oviously one of the most popular social media platforms out there. And obviously, one which is seen having great potential. Everyone was estimating that Twitter would earn a lot in the near future, however, few had the data to estimate how much. Do a search and you’ll understand the speculation over Twitter’s plans to earn money ranging from premium accounts to virtual money. But the revelation is out. Twitter expects its first revenue in Q3. They expected $400,000 (approximately INR 1.95 crore) in this quarter with a robust $4 million (19.5 crores) in Q4. The numbers Twitter are targeting by the end of 2013: 1 billion users, $1.54 billion in revenue, 5,200 employees and $1.1 billion in net earnings. Recently, there was a hack-attack on the email and twitter accounts of Twitter founder Evan Williams, his wife and several other employees. This was back in May. On the 14th of July, Techcrunch announce...

Twitter Users Launch a Stir Against Microsoft After it Brushes Aside Web St
2009-06-24 16:24:00
Social media agitation took a new shape when Campaign Monitor an email marketing software provider started Fixoutlook.org. Now before we talk about the site and the response it generated on Twitter, let’s see what exactly has caused the agitation if one can call it that. The core problem as Campaign Monitor notes on their blog is this: After testing the latest beta of Outlook 2010 and seeing the same poor standards support as 2007, a senior member of the Outlook team confirmed they plan on continuing to use Word to render HTML emails. Not only that, but early tests indicate that HTML support in the Word engine has not been improved in any way. Same bugs. Same quirks. There is a small history to it, Microsoft had originally hurt designer sentiments when it removed its HTML engine and replaced it with Word in 2007. A lot of us were hoping things will turn around in later versions but as this news says it certainly is not the case.Microsoft’s explanation quite simply is t...

Redesigned Google Webmaster Tools available to more users
2009-06-17 12:32:00
In May Google announced a redesign to their Webmaster Tools, but when the first announcement was made the new interface was not available as the default for users visiting the tools, only as a “try the new look Google Webmaster Tools” link once you had signed in. The new Google Webmaster Tools now appear to be the default when logging in.  This is a useful development for webmaster as it provides a slightly easier interface for users, making it a little clearer what you can get out of using their tools. When you select one of your websites from your list of sites within the tools you now see a “dashboard” type landing page with a summary of some of the information available, including the keywords which lead to impressions on your site and a summary of any crawl errors on the site.  The new design also allows you to see sitemaps which have been submitted by any other people who have access to your site, such as your search engine optimisatio...

Twitter Users And 90% Of Them Being Inactive - A Havard Research Report
2009-06-12 07:23:00
A Harvard study conducted recently has brought some very interesting, yet controversial Twitter statistics to the limelight. Keeping that aside for a moment, if you look at the numbers from Compete for the month of May, it gives some very surprising results. It looks as if Twitter has finally crossed its hype cycle, as its phenomenal growth rate (7 million unique visits in February!) finally seems to have come down, yet YouTube and Facebook have been attracting an ever increasing global audience. Coming back to the Harvard study, it has been found that a very tiny fraction of 10% users generate the content for the 90% of its users! The study analysed 300,000 random Twitter profiles. Mikolaja Jan Piskorski, who led the research, states that more than 50% of users post messages on the site less than once every 74 days. Apart from these, Hubspot has also revealed a more extensive study covering 4.5 million accounts and the findings further strengthen the previous conclusions. Here are...

In USA Users Spend Double the Time on Social Networks Now
2009-06-05 06:18:00
Facebook leads the pack here not in only in terms of number of users active but also with regards to the number of hours spent on the site. The total number of minutes spent on Facebook surged 700 percent year-on-year to 13.9 bn in April this year from 1.7 bn. However, it is Twitter who took the cake home really, the time spent on the popular microblog rose by as much as 3700 percent compared to last year. This firmly places the reason why many think Twitter will change the way live, for it is actually gaining momentum in terms of usage, but that’s on a different tangent to this post and so we will talk about it later. These numbers were presented in a Nielsen Report that came out some while back. Some other points to note and social networks mentioned include Blogger, Tagged.com and Myspace. Together these sites formed the 5 most active social networking platforms on the web (though not really in that order).  MySpace came second with 4.71 bn minutes which is a sharp 31 perc...
