Smoking linked with aging on skin that usually is not exposed to sunlight
2007-07-03 11:53:00 In classic movies, cigarette smoking was used as shorthand to convey sultriness and beauty. In the real world, the connection between smoking and one's appearance ? as many studies have shown ? has more to do with premature signs of skin aging and less to do with glamour and refinement.A new study from the University of Michigan Health System adds another dimension to the link between cigarette smoking and skin damage. The study suggests that smoking may be associated with a higher degree of aging on areas of skin, such as that of the inside of the upper arm, that are not normally exposed to sunlight."We examined non-facial skin that was protected from the sun, and found that the total number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were linked with the amount of skin damage a person experienced," says Yolanda R. Helfrich, M.D., lead author and assistant professor of dermatology at the U-M Medical School. The study appears in the March issue of ...

Usually a Contrarian Investor, Kerkorian Takes Aim at Bellagio, City Center
2007-05-22 14:42:00 In recent years billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian and his investment company Tracinda Corp. have been focused on potential value in beaten down automobile companies like General Motors (GM) and Chrysler. However, despite a huge upward revaluation in Las Vegas properties during that time, evidently he still sees value in that area.Monday we learned that Kerkorian is interested in acquiring the Bellagio hotel and casino as well as a new development project, City Center, which is set to open in 2009. Kerkorian is the majority owner of MGM Mirage (MGM) with a 56% stake in the gaming giant, worth about $10 billion before his intentions were made public. MGM shares rallied 10 points in after-hours trading Monday to $73 per share on the idea that Tracinda might wind up taking MGM private at some point down the line. The announcement is interesting given Kerkorian's recent foray into domestic car companies at very depressed prices. MGM Mirage is not a cheap stock (about 12 times 2006 cash...

Sandra Bullock Takes Legal Steps Usually Reserved for Deranged Ex-Boyfriend
2007-05-14 14:59:00 After a much-publicized attack was made recently on Sandra Bullock's hubby, Jesse James, Bullock was granted a three-year restraining order against her pedal-happy stalker. This attack, in which Marcia Diana Valentine attempted to run James over in his own driveway, was the final straw in a series of strange and disturbing instances in which Valentine had made her way onto the couple's property, including numerous occasions in which she was found screaming expletives at James, while lying in front of the garage door. The "Miss Congeniality" star told a court in the Orange County city of Westminster that the woman, identified as Marcia Diana Valentine, had left the fronds, complete with "weird signs," and "pieces of animal fur" in her yard on five occasions. I'm not sure if these pix are from Sandy actually leaving the courthouse after hearing the triumphant news, but if they are, I must say that litigation becomes her. Because that is a hot "going to court" ensemble if ever ...

Cola-flavored drinks usually contain considerable amounts of caffeine
2007-04-23 11:05:00 Theophylline, caffeine, and theobromine are three closely related plant alkaloids that are imbibed widely. At least half the population of the world consumes tea (containing caffeine and small amounts of theophylline and theobromine) prepared from the leaves of Thea sinensis, a bush native to southern China and now cultivated extensively in other countries. Cocoa and chocolate, from the seeds of Theobroma cacao, contain theobromine and some caffeine. Coffee, the most popular source of caffeine in the American diet, is extracted from the fruit of Coffea arabica and related species. Cola-flavored drinks usually contain considerable amounts of caffeine in part because of their content of extracts of the nuts of Cola acuminata and in part because caffeine is added during their production. The basis for the popularity of all caffeine-containing beverages is the ancient belief that they have stimulant and antisoporific actions that elevate mood, decrease fatigue, and increase capacity for...

2007-03-29 06:48:00 AirportismI'm usually not a big fan of airport art, which I've dubbed "airportism" in the past, and which is usually generalized by tame, usually abstracted public art that tries really hard to avoid the figure at all costs. The theme of flying is usually a common one -- and that's understandable, and artists can only go so far with it.And yet... at the Philadelphia International Airport, between terminals C and D, on the main concourse there's an installation by Nancy Blum, titled Butterfly Wall (will be there through June 2007) that is a welcome and interesting departure from the usual blah flying geese or paper airplanes sculptures that one sees all over American airports."Butterfly Wall" is a work made up of 80 butterflies cast out of China clay with incised and raised patterns on the wings. The color is painted on the back and it is then reflecting onto the wall space. The pattern of the wings have been adapted from Islamic architecture, adding an interesting and unexpected...

2007-03-14 20:43:00 Usually I spend my days collecting stories and ideas to write about as I walk, run and metro through the city. These are a few little life in Paris anecdotes that I couldn?t quite stretch into full stories on their own.Autobus, ligne 39Last Monday, Ella and I had been waiting at the Richelieu-Quatre Septembre bus stop for about 20 minutes before we saw the notice taped to the glass wall of the stop. Thanks to yet another protest, the bus line we take to the Académie for her dance class each Monday would once again be interrupted. From 18h to 20h that evening, there would be no busses running between Richelieu and Gare du Nord. As it was only 17h20, we were a little confused about why there was no bus. After mulling it over for a few minutes, we decided our best bet was to hike down the few blocks to Palais Royal, where we could catch the bus at an uninterrupted stop, just in case the line had already been disrupted. After about a block and a half, I looked back to see none other...

2007-01-15 06:29:01 (EOPC usually posts very serious articles. However, the below is a HUMOR piece. A tongue-in-cheek look at "online dating." Enjoy! - Fighter) by Aldra Robinson The ball drops. It's officially a new year. Everywhere you look, people are kissing and cheering. You hug friends, grab a few cheek pecks and suck down a couple of mighty swigs of your cocktail. Patronizing friends pat your back and whisper that it's ok to be single on the Big Night and not to worry, because love is just around the corner. Instead of blackening their eyes, you smile and remind them that you rather enjoy the single life. Then the resolve sets in as you say under your breath - by gods, I will not be single again on New Year's Eve. Enter Internet dating. Yes, you swore you'd never do it? again. But you're not going to make the same mistakes as before. Eharmony? Yahoo! Personals? Meeting without first seeing a picture? F*** that. You're not some average doofus. You're special. Smart, even....

2007-01-14 16:37:05 Weekends are usually slow around here since we’re almost always gone somewhere, but we do have some exciting things going on behind the scenes that will be rolled out in the coming weeks. Today we were all out visiting our dad and he shared country music related joke with us that I thought was worth repeating. Stop me if you’ve heard it. There was this preacher who looked like Conway Twitty. He was new to town and was going to go from house to house to introduce himself. The first house he came to there was a woman in the kitchen shucking corn. He knocked and when she came to the door she threw the corn in the air and exclaimed “Oh my gosh, it’s Conway Twitty!” He said “No, no, I’m just the new preacher. I wanted to stop by and introduce myself.” At the next house there was a woman in the kitchen shelling her peas. He knocked and when she opened the door she threw the peas everywhere as she yelled out “Oh my gosh, it’s Con...

2007-01-13 10:10:02 Book charges that news reports usually get things wrong on cannabis coverage (another book of note for policy advocates/analysts)The US mass media regularly misreport stories on cannabis and drug policy, according to a chapter in a new anthology published by Oxford University Press, Pot Politics: Marijuana and the Costs of Prohibition. Bruce Mirken, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington DC, argues in his essay that media reports on cannabis issues too often omit essential context while failing to ask the questions needed to give the public an accurate picture. This isn't necessarily a sign of bias, notes Mirken. He writes that the demand for "clear, involving story lines that can be summed up in just a few words ... almost invariably does violence to the subtleties and uncertainties of science." ....Pot Politics also features chapters by experts on biology, sociology, religion/ ethics, and even a Harvard economist. The book is edited by Mitch Ea...

You see like so many other Mum's out there I still want to be Me! I still want to be considered a person and I still want to prove my worth.I want to start a business and have had a couple of really good ideas lately and yet it seems that everywhere I turn there's a dead end. I havent found one helpful person yet in helping me get off the ground with three very different ideas, and that includes companies whose job it is to help me (WDA, Foothold etc) I know these ideas work successfully in other areas so I know they arnt rubbish, Its not as if I havent ran a business before so what is it??? What am I doing wrong. On another subject a piece of land right next to my house which I have been trying to buy of the council for 5 years has just gone up for sale. They have put it up for sale despite denying to me that they even own it. Wors... |
