South Indians are the leading Beer guzzlers!
2008-04-28 14:12:00 During my visit to Chennai this January for Proto.in, I was really surprised to know that Chennai does not have restaurants that serve Beer or alcoholic drinks. Not only that, it does not have any pubs or Disco's. If you want to go out and enjoy a couple of drinks, the only place would be 4 or 5 start hotels. Now thats a real dampener for person like me who really enjoys going out and having evening drinks with friends. However, it seems that outside of Chennai, South Indians seems to have a huge appetite for Beer. According to the latest figures released the growth was mainly led by the key guzzlers down south, with the largest market Andhra Pradesh vaulting 15.4%, Tamil Nadu 11.6% and Karnataka 24%. Another big market, Maharashtra, however, witnessed sedate growth of 5-6%, with Mumbai city recording a minor dip.
The end of BJP in UP: Gets 1.35% votes in by-poll
2008-04-18 21:26:00 Amid the blue hue that has swept UP, the humiliating defeat of BJP and its absolute marginalisation in the state has been totally overlooked. In the three Assembly by-polls, the share of votes in Muradnagar, Colonelganj and Bilgram, the party has been extraordinary low. It could get just 1.35%, 3% and 5% votes in the elections, the results for which were announced two days back. The BSP won all the three constituences, as also the two Lok Sabha seats. Surprisingly, the Lotus has wilted in the state where it emerged in the mid-80s pitting Hindus and Muslims against each other. And today it seems both Hindus and Muslims have forgotten this party in India's most populous state. This is shocking for the party that it got such a low vote shate. And it has happened barely two decades after the Ram Mandir movement threw the country into communal flames. Clearly the electorate no longer considers BJP as a political option. It was this state where the BJP had got 57 seats out of 85 at the heig...
On the Yamuna. Mathura. Uttar Pradesh
2008-04-02 21:00:00 Women drying up saris alongside the sacred Yamuna river in Mathura. A long line of picturesque, pink ghats - with their steps leading to the water's edge, arched gateways and a temple, of course pink, extending along the right bank of the River Yamuna, emphasise the sacred character of the town of Mathura. The birth place of Lord Krishna, "the best known, best loved and most complex of Lord Vishnu's manifestations". Mathura is today an important place of pilgrimage. An ancient city, Mathura's strategic location at the crossroads of various trade routes - that went westwards to West Asia and the Roman Empire; northwards, via Taxila, Pushkalavati and Purushapur to Central Asia and the Silk Route and eastwards to China - ensured its position as a centre of trade and a meeting point for many different culturesOn the cover of this book: www.garzantilibri.it/default.ph-p?page=visu_libro&CPID...

Dividing UP: Harit Pradesh, Bundelkhand & Purvanchal
2008-02-17 19:02:00 Uttar Pradesh, the heart of India, and the great landmass with a population of 200 million may get trifurcated into three states (or even four states). And Lucknow may lose its political power that will get divided among Varanasi, Jhansi and Meerut, the capitals of the proposed states. It may take a couple of more years for the states to come into existence, but the growing regional aspirations among people in these regions and the politicians' vested interests will ultimately lead to the division of these states.Though UP is difficult to govern, given its size, the fact remains that smaller states have turned out to be bigger failures. As long as Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand were part of greater Madhya Pradesh and greater Bihar, the situation in these regions was not as bad as today. Both the states that had huge mineral deposits and other natural resources, have become hotbeds of Naxalism. Corruption has grown by leaps and bounds and insurgency has made development impossible. These ...

2008-01-28 14:32:00 The Bachchans - Amitabh Bachchan along with wife Jaya Bachchan, son Abhishek Bachchan and daughter in law Aishwairya Rai Bachchan - were in Daulatpur village in Barabanki disctrict, Uttar Pradesh to lay the foundation stone for a girls' school named after the Bachchan bahu. The school - which is named Shrimati Aishwarya Bachchan Kanya Mahavidyalaya - is the very first in that area, sprawling across 3.5 acres of land bought specifically for this purpose. In her very first public address, Aishwarya said, "I was a little hesitant when the family decided to name the school after me. Since, there are so many other seniors in the family already.I think it would have been more appropriate to name it after them. But now that they have convinced me, my only hope is to ensure that I can live up to their expectations." In addition to the Bachchan family, a number of UNPA leaders including former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister - Mulayam Singh Yadav and Senior SP leader and close friend of the Bach...

Mayawati forgets Muslims: No place in 30% job quota in private sector
2008-01-11 21:34:00 UP Chief Minister Mayawati has announced 30% quota in private sector. The scheme says that any industrial group that seeks land in Uttar Pradesh or any government assistnce in any other form, will have to give voluntary quota. No doubt it is a marvellous idea despite the fact that not many investors are coming to UP. But it is also true that UP is not totally devoid of opportunities. If properly implemented and monitored this scheme can work wonders. But Maya has conveniently forgotten Muslims. The 30% quota would be divided equally among Dalits, Other Backward Castes (OBCs) and Upper Castes. So where are Muslims? After Samajwadi Party, it is BSP that gets most Muslim votes. But Mayawati has had a strange relationship with Muslims. She is never comfortable with the community. And is only reaping the benefits of the work of her mentor Kashi Ram, who had brought the Dalis and Muslims together in heartland, after the failure of Dr Faridi's experiment. From Urdu poet Malikzada Manzoor Ah...
