2007-10-28 16:55:00 Has a new member, Alisher Saipov. Saipov was shot dead outside his office. Of course, there is no evidence connecting the murder of this critic of the Uzbek regime and aforesaid repressive regime. Why only the other week, the European Union was offering Uzbekistan a little carrot, to encourage it to repress a little more lightly [my italics below]: With a view to encouraging the Uzbek authorities to take positive steps to improve the human rights situation and taking into account their commitments, the Council decided that the visa restrictions would not apply for a period of six months, at which point the Council will review if the Uzbek authorities have made progress towards meeting the conditions mentioned in paragraph 4 of these Conclusions. The Council may decide to apply the visa restrictions earlier if necessary, in light of the actions of the Uzbek authorities in the area of human rights. We wouldn’t want to reimpose sanctions because some guy with a three month old daughter...

Uzbek billionaire Usmanov censors critic and many UK MPs' blogs
2007-09-23 17:00:00 by Richard Kastelein A number of U.K. MPs' personal websites and blogs - including London mayoral candidate Boris Johnson - were forced offline earlier today when Alisher Usmanov, an Uzbek billionaire complained about a blog posting by Craig Murray, a former British ambassador to Uzbekistan. Fasthosts - Craig Murray's ISP - pulled the plug on his site, apparently also killing the sites of several other customers including Tim Ireland's Bloggerheads, Bop Piper, and The UK Today. Murray is the author of Murder in Samarkand - A British Ambassador's Controversial Defiance of Tyranny in the War on Terror - A shocking account of the post-USSR Uzbekistan - relaying the problems of living in a brutal dictatorship but also because it shows to what depths the British sunk in its attempts to spin the truth and cover up torture (including boiling people alive). Schillings, the lawyers acting on behalf of Usmanov, was allegedly successful in gett...

ASIA: Solar energy in Uzbekistan
2007-09-19 16:28:00 An era of record-high oil prices topping $80 a barrel has left investors and nations scrambling to develop alternative sources of energy. The theoretical annual potential of solar power is estimated to exceed all fossil fuels reserves by more than 10-20 times. In Central Asia, solar power is receiving renewed attention, particularly in Uzbekistan, with a population of 26 million. Besides a climate suited to solar power, Uzbekistan brings advantages to the table, including a longstanding interest in generating power from sunlight, an advanced industrial base and a highly literate, hard-working population. Since 1965, the Uzbek Academy of Sciences has published the quarterly journal Geliotekhnika ('Applied Solar Energy,') the former Soviet Union`s sole scientific publication devoted to solar power. Topics covered range from solar radiation, photovoltaics and solar materials to direct conversion of solar energy into electrical power. The technical potential of solar energy in Uzbekis...

EU: Drive For Central Asia Strategy Could Shape Uzbekistan Policy
2007-04-21 01:43:00 via www.rferl.orgEU foreign ministers will hold their first debate on the bloc's evolving Central Asian strategy in Luxembourg next week. That blueprint is being pushed by the current holder of the rotating EU Presidency, Germany, and could be adopted at an EU summit in June. But critics in Brussels fear the drive to bring coherence to the EU's approach to energy-rich and strategically important Central Asia could come at a high cost. Some officials say that they specifically fear the EU might be forced to ease the sanctions imposed on Uzbekistan in the wake of a bloody security crackdown in Andijon in 2005. Uzbekistan is the region's most populous country, and its cooperation is vital to the success of the EU's wider Central Asia strategy. All 27 EU member states agree that closer links with Central Asia are desirable. The EU has often recognized the region's enormous potential in contributing to meeting the bloc's energy needs. The EU is also interested in playing a greater role...

View the title page, printed on 36 lbs watermarked 100% organic banana leaf fairtrade paper that costs way to much at Kinkos. You should probably check your hastily reformatted thesis title before handing in your MA thesis paper to your graduate school.  Click on this thumbnail to the left for a laugh. And if you are actually interested in minorities in Afghanistan (or Tajikistan), especially the Uzbeks, this thesis paper may serve as a decent bibliography at the very least. The title is Uzbeks Versus The Center: Mobilization As An Ethnic Minority In The Tajikistan and Afghanistan Civil Wars.  You can download the paper here in pdf.

Ahmed Rashid Versus the Uzbeks
2007-03-29 20:54:00 March 29, 2007. You’ve read Taliban, the influential book by superstar reporter and author Ahmed Rashid, right? Of course you have, everybody has. And everybody seems to have it on their bookshelf, displayed prominently as proof of their interest and expertise in Afghanistan.                - Here’s a fun game to play when you see said book: 1) Pick up book and say “Oooh! What an interesting book! Do you recommend it?” To which the book’s owner says “Of course! It is indispensable.” 2) Go to page 56 and 57, as well as page 149 and read out loud (in a fake Oxbridge British accent) the passages about the Uzbeks. 3) Watch the owner of the book squirm in front of the other people present and hear him/her claim to have missed those parts. So what do those passages contain? Here’s a sample: “The Uzbeks, the roughest and toughest of all the Central Asian nationalities, are noted for their love of marauding and pil...
