Random thoughts about my vacation
2008-07-08 23:38:00 I’m back from our family vaycay to San Diego and trying to adjust to the steamy heat and time change. Getting in at 1:30 this morning doesn’t help any. A big thanks to the fab bitches who blog sat. You girls rock! We had a great time on our trip. It was jam packed and Marigrace was ...
Foreclosed Homes Rise - Senate on Vacation
2008-07-08 14:46:00 From July 4th, the Senate comes back for a fresh start. But still, there will be more than 55,000 new foreclosed homes by then all across the nation. This is not even the whole picture though. There is more calamity predicted with over three million house owners falling under the precarious state of being foreclosed ...
My weenie has a first name, it's B-U-S-Y-M-O-M
2008-07-08 00:24:00 July 7th, really? Seems that the globe-hopping lifestyle I lead cuts down on time to write at this here collection of pixels. Returned home from back to back trips, first to the beach and then to St. Louis for the Fourth of July. Oh, and I had a lovely dinner with the Linsdsay and my new friend, Tori in between trips. We made plans to paint San Francisco chartreuse during BlogHer next week. Next week? Um, yeah. Pack. Buy something to pack... Anyway, our annual visit to (sometimes reader) Fourladsnme's St.Louis home was a blast, as always. We went to a parade and party-hopped on Friday, eating more than our share of, well, everything. Saturday brought hurling (the game, not a consequence of Friday, silly) and a trip to Six Flags. More flags. More fun. More slaps to that guy in the commercial. The kids rode themselves silly on Batman, Mr. Freeze and the Ninja. The adults partook in a few rides, and I was very grateful that there were younger, less puke prone adults (...

Vacation Day Three: "Wal-ligators?"
2008-07-04 11:41:00 You do things on vacation that you would never do sitting at home. That's what vacations are all about, in my mind: getting out and seeing the world and trying new things. I love to do that, even when the world I'm seeing is mostly t-shirt shops and the World's Largest Orange, and the "new things" I'm trying are very very bony alligator ribs.Friday, Day Three of our vacation, promised all sorts of new things. Or at least, a lot of one new thing: Gators. Despite our best efforts, we had not yet seen an actual alligator in Florida -- this despite the fact that I had walked by the lake at the time share several times, and we'd taken the Babies! past the lake at least once, and we'd also driven around a lot and been to Wal-Mart several times. (I expected, at a Super Wal-Mart, that they'd at least have the Wal-Mart version of alligators, like they have the Wal-Mart version of everything else. "Wal-ligators." But no luck.)Florida has a fix for that: Gatorland. Gatorland, according ...
Happy 4th of July - My Vacation Starts Now!
2008-07-02 19:39:00 Yes, I am one of those bloggers who actually have a life and enjoy getting away from the computer at times. I am heading out today and won’t be back until Monday. Yesssss! Time for beer, bikinis, blazing sun, boating, golf cart 4×4-ing, and other crazy shenanigans, because I am cool like that. I hope everyone has ...

The Cure For The Post-Vacation Blues
2008-07-02 13:31:00 Hey, readers. I just got back from vacation, which can mean only one thing: It's time to begin planning the next one! How else am I going to get over those post-vacation blues? This time last week, I was jetting off to sunny Florida. Now, here I am, "working" at my office and reminiscing about the fun I had.The best way to overcome those doldrums is, like I said, start working on the next trip. Since this last vacation was for the kids -- Orlando, theme parks, beaches, pizza buffets-- I'm thinking the next one can be a little more me-oriented. Like taking one of the always popular European river cruises I can book through Cruiselocators.com. They're the one-stop website for worldwide cruising vacations, and they offer th ebest possible pricing on cruises and airfare. They can even get preferred stateroom selection. I'm not sure what that is, but I like to get stuff that's preferred. They offer weekly specials, theme cruises, links to travel insurance -- you won't need to w...
Vacation Part Two: Please Don't Feed McGriddles To the Alligators
2008-07-02 11:58:00 My vacation story continues. To read part one, click here. There's something either very disturbing, or very bothersome, about how long a "McGriddle" can stay fresh sitting in a backpack without any special wrapping whatsoever. We got some "McGriddles" at O'Hare International Airport at one of the 150 McDonald's we passed going from the gate where we arrived to the gate where we would leave. When your flight begins in Madison, Wisconsin, you may develop an unrealistic expectation of airports. We made it to the airport in a reasonable amount of time, and unloaded the Babies! and luggage. I then parked in the long-term parking lot, which is cheaper because it's far enough away from the terminal that you can't actually see the terminal. It's so far away that there's wildlife there; as I walked past a tree, something moved and ran away. I hoped it was a cat, but I thought it might be a raccoon-- maybe even one of the ones we'd displaced.Security at the Madison NonInternational Air...
New Vacation Series Seascape by PMILLER
2008-07-01 19:22:00 Here is my latest painting in the vacation series. I will be discussing the evolution of this series (in addition, later I will be discussing the evolution of my other series Kung Foo Circle Series). Both I originally started 5 years ago as a hobby and now that I am painting full time, all of my paintings have begun to evolve adding more metallics(in different colors), slight changes to the basic feel of the series and more. If you've watched my work for awhile on a casual basis, you are probably nodding your head saying, "Yeah I was wondering why in the series, I see paintings that vary a little in style/feel AND why some of the series is available only in prints". Now you know!(or my customers who follow me are saying, "I knew that!" because they own the original). Mystical MorningBuy or ViewThis series is inspired by my love of taking tropical vacations. Vivid tropical colors with deposits of metallics like gold, silver and copper make these paintings full of light and ene...

Vacation All I Ever Wanted.
2008-06-30 15:27:00 Here is some interesting math for you: My ratio of hours of sleep to alligators in the past 5 days is about 25-1 -- which is to say, I slept 1 hour for every 25 alligators I saw on vacation.I like those numbers. We took 80% of our kids on vacation over the last week. Oldest is 21 now and has important things to do like see her new boyfriend and wait for her tax rebate check, so she opted not to go. She did call us several times to complain that her tax rebate had not arrived and to complain that she wished she'd come, so it was a lot like having her on vacation anyway; complaining is how Oldest blows off steam.I blow off steam by taking two teenagers, two toddlers, and Sweetie on a cross-country trip to Orlando and Tampa, but by "Orlando" I actually mean "Kissimmee," which I pronounce "kiss-im-me" but which The Boy and Middle tell me (repeatedly) is pronounced "kiss-sim-mee." I meant to take us to Orlando, and we actually did go to Orlando -- we just did not stay in Orlando, because...
Home again, home again
2008-06-30 02:27:00 Home from the beach. Yay. Despite a few missteps, a good time was had by all. One of the secrets of grown ups is that a vacation really isn't one when you're the parent, and double that when you're the Sandwich Generation poster child. The fun doesn't end, though, as the house is crawling with non-native children. Summer is exhausting for those of us who aren't teachers or students. Back to work tomorrow, as they are funny about wanting me to you know, be there.

Vacation Reading
2008-06-26 07:32:00 What I read on my summer vacation, by Greg#23 -- "Letters From London" by Julian BarnesBarnes is one of those guys that I've always sort of known I'd like, but I've never bothered picking up any of his books for whatever reason. Maybe because he had some sort of spat with Martin Amis and I used to think Amis was really hot shit before he got kind of crazy, so it was misguided loyalty to Marty. Maybe there was just something that I always wanted to read a little bit more, sort of the same way Iceland is annually my #2 choice for vacation but I never actually get there. But I found this in the travel section of a used bookstore back in Boulder, thought "perhaps this will be good," and since I hadn't spent my usual $400 on books, got it. And it's really, really good. It's a collection of columns from Barnes's time as the London correspondent for the New Yorker -- early '90s, roughly the end of Thatcher's time in office to the ascendancy of Tony Blair. Barnes is quite talented a...

My Idea of a Vacation Home
2008-06-14 00:43:00 What comes to mind when you think of holiday home or a place to spend time after retiring from hustle and bustle of the active life? Some quiet, serene and less crowded corner where one can have peace of mind. Cabo San Lucas villas ? offers you some of the best villas and condos.Personally speaking, beach vacations are close to my own idea of best time in life and beachfront homes in Cabo San Lucas comes closer to what I perceive. Have a look at the properties and you will find views of some of the world's great treasures. The Sea of Cortez is a strategic point from which to embark on a whale-watching adventure or scuba dive the reefs in pristine azure waters. Nature lovers enjoy exploring Land's End, where the famous Arch, or "El Arco," rises majestically from the Pacific Ocean. Explore the site and see what is on the offer.Cabo San lucas real estate, with over 12 years of experience in Mexico market is the best when it comes to buying vacation property in Mexico. Their claim to ...

Diesel's Summer Vacation
2008-06-09 17:34:00 While Diesel is taking a well-deserved break from blogging this week, we present to you a special series of guest posts, lovingly entitled "Meet the Real Diesel."Today's guest blogger is Snuppy, aka "Crazy Aunt Bea," formerly of Central Snark, whose special bond with Diesel has transcended time, space and several restraining orders. Enjoy.Diesel's Summer VacationDiesel was the prettiest little girl I ever did see. Despite her dirty face, impossibly short hair, and the fact she wore dingy dungarees over a torn tee shirt, I could tell from the moment I shoved her inside my car that she was a child worth investing time, money, and bath salts on. And believe you me, I went about doing just that during the summer young Diesel spent with me on the ancestral family farm, located on the outskirts of Pixley, California.Like all children in new surroundings, Diesel -- or Dee Dee, as I preferred to call her -- was initially timid, and just a tad terrified. Truth be told, I was a little surp...

Texan Farmer On Vacation
2008-06-06 12:18:00 A Texan farmer went to Australia for a vacation. There he met an Australian farmer and got talking to him. The Australian farmer showed off his big wheat field and the Texan said, "Oh! We have wheat fields that are at least twice as large."Then they walked around the ranch a little, and the Australian showed off his herd of cattle. The Texan immediately said, "We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cattle."The conversation had, meanwhile, almost died when the Texan saw a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field. He asked the Australian farmer, "And what are those?"The Australian farmer replied with an incredulous look, "Don't you have any grasshoppers in Texas, mate?"

How To Spend Your Summer Vacation
2008-06-05 13:57:00 by Tom Chartier Now that the Indy 500 is under our belts and the kids are getting more rambunctious everyday we know whats coming: Summer vacation! What to do? What to do? Unlike us Plebes, the High and Mighty can do what they what, when they want and where they want. An indoor skiing trip to Dubai? Sounds like a stone groove. Bundle up my overcoat! Theres always the ever-popular family trek to Wally World. Pack up the kids in the Family Truckster and head out across country to the Happiest Place on Earth. Gas prices being what they are this may no longer be an option for the struggling family. I suspect a big family excursion in a rented motor home may be out of the question also. Oh well, both mom and dad are both working stiffs. Each gets only ten days personal leave all year. That has to be saved for that ruptured appendix and the dreaded trip to Grandmas house for Christmas. I like the idea of a Ted Nugent Sunrize Safari. Yes sir! Give little Billy the chance to...

Selling Your Second or Vacation Home
2008-06-04 18:28:00 Almost everyone is affected by something happening within the economy today.Housing prices have taken a dive. Staples such as food and gas are significantly more expensive and still rising. Jobs are being cut throughout many sectors such as construction, education, retail, restaurant, manufacturing, etc. So, the first thing we find ourselves doing is looking to see what we can do without.I?ve been receiving a lot of calls and emails regarding the sale of second or vacation homes. Once a nice luxury and place to retreat, they are more and more becoming a financial strain, or at least an unnecessary part of life for many. When selling a vacation or second home, you can?t enjoy the personal exclusion given to primary residences, nor can you qualify for a 1031 exchange available for investment property. Thus, saving on taxes becomes an even more important issue. If you need to maximize your income, a Self Directed Installment Sale could be an excellent choice. It will basically allow you ...
Foreclosure Prevention Tip: Downsize Summer Vacation
2008-06-04 11:15:00 With summer here, it is only natural for families to think about spending some quality time before another school year begins. But with the rising cost of living and fuel prices, some families have considered downsizing their summer vacation.
New Motorhomes -- and a new style of vacation.
2008-06-03 21:31:00 Think you're getting a break on your vacation because you booked early or have a travel package? By the time you add up airplane ticket costs, hotel room expenses, and eating out 3 meals a day for the entire week or two of your vacation, there's hardly enough left to buy your Orca-hat.Plus, you spend your whole vacation in the hotel or in the line at the airport, or sitting on the runway, never seeing the beauty of America, always moving to someone else's schedule, having to keep taking off your shoes and your belt. Pleh, I say.Why not try something new this year? Get one of the New Motorhomes from MotorhomeRV? They're selling motor home and RVs (that's recreational vehicles) at prices that are lower than most new cars -- and definitely lower than the cost of a bunch of airline tickets and hotel rooms and meals in restaurants.I've been looking into it myself, not just because I like to save money -- I do -- but because of the way I could travel with the family. I don't need t...

GoPets: Vacation Island (for Nintendo DS Lite)
2008-06-02 21:37:00 I have a Nintendo DS Lite and have been trying out some new games on it. One I’ve been playing lately is GoPets Vacation Island. It’s basically a kid-friendly introduction to social networking by way of virtual pets. My toddler is a bit too young to really understand the concept yet but she had fun creating her “pet” with me. We are the proud adopted parents of a purple puppy. In the game, your adopted pet roams around the island and meets other pets and plays games. If you connect using the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection, you can meet other pets on the island and exchange “Iku” messages. These are picture-coded messages that you send back and forth with other virtual pet-owners. A game like this also teaches basic responsibility, because the child needs to care for his or her “pet”, as well as take initiative to care for someone else’s pet. This is a really cute game - perfect for the pre-school to grade school-age kids. ...

Jimmy Takes a Vacation...You Have All the Fun!
2008-06-02 18:26:00 When the language and content of modern TV shows and movies get you down and make you feel dirty (and not in a titilating way), nothing is more cleansing to the psyche than watching a good old fashioned movie from the 50s or 60s. I have my list of favorites, and my most recent addition is the 1962 comedy Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation, starring my favorite classic (and in my opinion, cutest) everyman actor, James Stewart. I requested the movie through my library (the only place, it seems, to get a hold of old movies these days) and liked it so much I watched it twice. There's no f-word, no nudity, and no potty jokes - just good, clean (if a bit slapstick) fun, much of it at the expense of hapless Roger Hobbs, who just wants to spend a quiet vacation with his wife. Those plans are blown up when she insists on inviting their grown children to join them in a rented house on the California coast. There are bratty grandchildren, a cantakerous water pump, and boorish houseguests to contend w...

Orlando Vacation Rentals
2008-06-01 20:50:00 Choosing to rent an Orlando vacation home means you will be right in the heart of all the action Orlando has to offer. From the point you arrive a short 20-30 minute drive from the airport will take you to your home from home for the duration of your stay. Hundreds of vacation rental villas are well within a 30-minute drive to all the main Walt Disney World attractions. Furthermore many of these can actually be found situated a mere 15-20 minute drive away. On the days you wish to explore other Orlando attractions e.g. Universal Studios or Sea World again your vacation villa will have you centrally and conveniently based to access these locations easily. So close to shopping¦No one can visit Orlando and be able to resist the temptation of visiting some fabulous shopping malls. Again, less than half an hours drive away you can find yourself at Belz or the Premium Outlets or the Lake Buena Vista Factory Outlets or the Florida Mall. Let us not forget the more recently built Mall at Mill...

Going to the US on "vacation"
2008-05-30 20:11:00 Last month I posted about my plans for a trip overseas. Almost everything has now been decided and I will be leaving for New York on Monday (June 2nd) and returning on Saturday (June 28th). This trip was being planned for a long time and through various ups and downs its finally going through. Things are not as good as I want it to be (for one I have very littleor should I sayno money) but although a bit nervous I am looking forward to the experience and meeting a few family members for the first time and seeing others I have not seen for a long while. I am still not certain how a steady connection will work out or if Ill have the time to spend my usual 10 hours a day in front a computer working or idling on the internet.
