2008-04-20 04:01:00 In Loving Memory of Valentin Artomov 1933 – 2008 My Father-in-law passed away Thursday morning. We had his funeral today and I gave the eulogy for him. Unfortunately, he had only been in the USA for a month. But he was able to spend his final month with his daughter and granddaughter. I think this was his driving force to getting to the USA and I am happy that he was able to fulfill his final dream of living here in the USA with his children. He was a loving man and a pretty funny guy. We will miss him a lot, but I know he has been suffering for quite some time with numerous health problems to include cancer. I am sure he is in a far better place and wish him well on this new journey. Maybe someday, I will meet up with him again and we can sit down and drink a bottle of vodka. Valentin indicated he feels pain "like someone sticking a knife in you," which causes discomfort to radiate down his right arm. Although the New York Mets haven't committed to sending Valentin to New York, he expects to head there soon to receive an injection of antiinflammatory medication, which did the trick with similar discomfort when he played for the White Sox. Even if that calms the situation and Valentin avoids surgery, he doesn't figure he'll have enough at-bats to be ready to break camp with the team, or to have convinced the team to carry him. Valentin, who is on a minor-league contract, has been willing to begin the season in Triple-A if he's not fully recovered from surgery to repair a torn ACL. At 38 years old, however, he's not inclined to endure another extensive medical procedure.

In 2006 when he came out of nowhere to become the Mets starting second baseman he had less then 20 games experience at the position.
