2008-02-20 21:25:00 The Palmetto Scoop has learned that Sen. Lewis Vaughn (R-Greenville) is expected to announce that his first Senate term will also be his last. Sources close to Vaughn tell us that he will not seek re-election in the fifth district but did not give a reason why. He had reportedly been considering whether or not to run again for the past two months, but today told friends, family and political associates of his decision. Vaughn spent nearly two decades in the State House of Representatives before winning a 2006 special election to fill the Senate seat of Verne Smith, who died in office. It is expected that that Rep. Phillip Shoopman and Mike Meilinger, who lost to Vaughn in the special election runoff, will seek this seat as both have supposedly begun putting together a campaign in the event that Vaughn would choose not to run.
