Vegetarianism And The Vegetarian Movement Beliefs
2008-04-11 04:57:00 With the growing interest in the health benefits of the vegetarian diets, it is easy to forget why vegetarianism was invented in the first place. The vegetarian websites are full of information why vegetarianism is good for us ? it lowers our Body Mass Index, makes us healthier and better-looking. In this flood of information it is easy to miss the fact that the first vegetarians weren't interested in their health at all. There were other, more serious, reasons to quit eating meat.Roots: ethicsThough it is said that Buddha never ate meat, the first vegetarians we know of for sure were the philosophers of ancient Greece and Rome. They were the first to notice the ultimate cruelty connected with killing animals only to feed humans. Pythagoras, Plutarch, Seneca ? everyone of them became a vegetarian because of ethical reasons. This notion was also visible in many various religions, including Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and several Christian churches.Though now we tend to think that veget...

Aside from ethics, what are the main reasons people are turning away from meat? Health and the ecology.

The skinny on diet junk-food
2008-03-14 19:00:00 My sister-in-law, the Weight Watcherer, is probably the pickiest eater I know. She doesn’t like vegetables, she doesn’t eat much fruit. What she seems to live on are those ridiculously expensive 100-calorie preportioned diet junk-food snacks. But yet because she’s managed to lose her baby weight and is now back to what is ...
Vegetarianism vs. Veganism - What?s Right For You?
2008-03-12 17:00:00 So what's the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan? A vegetarian doesn?t eat any animal flesh. Traditionally, you might say a vegetarian doesn?t eat meat, but in some countries ?meat? refers to just beef. A vegetarian does not eat cow, chicken, fish, pig, or any other animal. Some vegetarians do not eat chicken broth, lard, and even marshmallows because these items are made with animal by-products. A vegan, or lacto-ova vegetarian, does not eat any animal products. Like the name suggests, a vegan does not consume milk (lacto), eggs (ova), or meat (vegetarian). Obviously, a vegan diet avoids the ?gray area? items mentioned above, like chicken broth. A vegan diet is far more restrictive than a vegetarian diet and includes mostly fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes.

Has slavery truly been abolished?
2007-11-26 18:35:00 Like many atheists, I tend to like Richard Dawkins. He’s reasonable, down-to-Earth and passionate about right-headedness. He’s moral, or, at least, makes an effort to be. And, like all people who pursue causes, he prioritizes one cause over others (which is in fact how it ought to be, to concentrate resources better) but does not ...
My Decision on Vegetarianism
2007-10-20 19:54:00 When I was 15 years old and living the hand-me-down hippie lifestyle, passed on from my Mom, I and my commune-raised friends who were descended from the Me Generation, were convinced that we were changing the world with our liberal politics and outspoken ways. Most of those friends were vegetarian and, because I, at ...
How PeTA treats women like meat
2007-10-19 18:14:00 Back before graduate school (you know, when I still had a life), I was active in three animals rights organizations including Compassion over Killing, Mercy for Animals and the Cincinnati chapter of Earthsave. But as a committed vegetarian and animal rights advocate, there is one organization I refuse to join: PeTA. I?ve had some ...

Starbucks phases out growth hormones
2007-09-16 19:49:00 After six years of pressure from the Organic Consumers Association and its allies, Starbucks has announced it will completely phase out recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH/rBST) in all of its company-owned coffeeshops by early 2008. The coffee-chain’s decision comes on the heels of an announcement from Cincinnati-based food retail giant, Kroger’s, who announced they will ...

Want to impress a first date? Order a slab of meat
2007-08-10 03:15:00 A few months ago Hummer started airing commercials in which a vegetarian standing in a grocery store checkout line with his veggies and tofu checks out the groceries of the man behind him. He looks at his tofu and then looks at the other guy?s huge slabs of blood-red meat. Cut to the same vegetarian, ...
The internalization of fat-hatred
2007-08-03 21:03:00 A few weeks ago, I wrote about an idiot editorial by fat-hater Jamie O’Neill. Despite the fact that I referred to O’Neill as an “imbecile” and called his piece an act of “sheer ignorance” and I might have even called him on the jackass he is (maybe I only thought that), the post seems ...
Veganism or vegetarianism and ?effortless? weight loss/maintenance
2007-06-11 06:29:00 In my previous post, I discussed some of the benefits to the environment that going vegan or vegetarian even part time provides. Committed environmentalists will see the merit in this, but a more immediate and personal effect you might not have considered is that becoming vegan or vegetarian (even partially) is a wonderful, nearly effortless way to help control your weight. With something like 60% or better of the US population overweight or obese, it?s clear that the country has a chronic health problem it needs to address. Of course, the biggest reason for this explosion in obesity is our lack of activity, coupled by a dependence on refined foods, fast food, and high sugar intake. But what if, at least to start, you could ?have your cake and eat it,? too? If you just replaced a high-fat meat-based meal with lots of refined carbs three days a week with a veggie-based one, you?d save yourself anywhere from several hundred to a thousand or more calories a week, boost your fiber intake...
Vegetarianism takes three steps back. Mars chocolate bars will now have ani
2007-05-15 03:17:00 The makers of the popular chocolate bar Mars, have sadly decided to add rennet which comes from calves stomach. When i first read this, aside from making me sick, it really felt like a major step back in time. What an unprogressive move by such a mammoth company. What kind of precedence does this set for other chocolate makers? What is the benefit to this move, besides profit? Will others now get on the bandwagon? Sad indeed.

Vegetarianism as Environmental Movement
2007-05-03 04:17:00 This article and its accompanying source delve deeply into the progresive realization that raising and feeding livestock animals as food for meat-eaters is taking its toll on Mother Earth. There are a host of issues that "the raising and feeding" is bringing to the forefront including water pollution, air pollution, land degradation, and other environmental ailments swept under the rug that the majority of the population doesn't know about. Vegetarians everywhere should feel good knowing we are contributing positively to the world we live-in and we are environmental activists in our own right simply by adopting a vegetarian diet. THE PRETZEL LOGIC OF VEGETARIANISM
2007-03-01 16:14:00 From Ted Rall:Vegetarians claim there is simply no spiritual defense in either the Western or Eastern religious traditions for eating meat: Animals are sentient beings and their deaths causes them great pain and suffering. But this spiritial defense does not apply to plants. The argument that killing plants matters less than killing animals defies logic.http://feeds.feedburner.c-om/blogspot/naOQ

Vegetarianism and Spirituality
2006-12-11 09:20:01 "Most Merciful shows mercy to those who have mercy on others. Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heaven will show mercy to you." - Prophet Mohammed, upon him be peace"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet" - Albert Einstein."If a man eats meat, he will take on the qualities of the animal he eats and once those qualities enter, the man's anger, his hastiness, and his animal qualities will increase. If he does not kill anything on the inside he will not kill anything on the outside." - Islamic Holiness M. R. Bawa Muhaiyaddeen"The eating of meat extinguishes the seed of great compassion." - The Buddha in Mahaparinirvana Sutra"One is not a great one because one defeats or harms other living beings. One is so called because one refrains from defeating or harming other living beings." - The Buddha in Dhammapada, Ch. 19 (15/270), Max Muller, Trans."The time will come when men such...
Vegetarianism and Sufism | Spiritual aspects
2006-12-09 21:16:01 Although the majority of Muslims are meat eaters, there is also widespread remembrance of Muhammad's warning, "Do not allow your stomachs to become graveyards!" For this reason, meat is used in moderation in many traditional recipes. Many Sufi tariqats prohibit meat-eating during retreats. The Qadiri shaikh Abdul Karim Jili, commenting on Ibn Arabi's advice to avoid animal fat during retreats, stated that "animal fat strengthens animality, and its principles will dominate the spiritual principles."The 15th Century poet Kabir, whose Sufism represented a fusion of principles from both the Islamic and Hindu traditions, unequivocally condemned meat eating, characterizing it as the ultimate failure of compassion, deserving of eternal punishment; he stated that even the companionship of meat-eaters was harmful to the soul. In a gentler tone, the 20th century Sri Lankan Qadiri teacher Bawa Muhaiyaddeen also encouraged vegetarianism, stating that arrogance, haste and anger may decrease by...

Why Vegetarianism is a Better Alternative
1969-12-31 19:00:00 With the growing awareness of the importance of healthy food, many people are also becoming vegetarian because it matches the kind of low fat, high fiber diet recommended by dieticians and doctors. Concern about the environment is another factor as people become more aware of the effect raising animals for their meat is having on the environment. Or you may be concerned about wasting world food resources by using land to raise animals for meat instead of growing crops that can feed more people directly. Animals need far more water than grain crops. According to the USDA, growing the crops necessary to feed farmed animals requires nearly half of the United States’ water supply and 80% of its agricultural land. Additionally, animals raised for food in the U.S. consume 90% of the soya crop, 80% of the corn crop, and a total of 70% of its grain. One acre of pasture produces an average of 165 pounds of beef; the same acre can produce 20,000 pounds of potatoes. Vegetarian diets h...
