Vegetarians on TV
2008-03-28 19:01:00 The Web site Fancast has put up a list of television’s best and worst shows in the treatment and portrayal of animals. The list was compiled by Beverly Kaskey, the senior director of the Hollywood branch of the Humane Society of the United States. There are some interesting choices on there. The list got me thinking about vegetarian characters on TV shows, and I realized I could think of only a couple. Lisa from “The Simpsons” is the one that first sprung to mind. Angela on “The Office” is another (she’s also a huge cat lover). But beyond those, I couldn’t think of any currently on the air. Phoebe was a vegetarian on “Friends.” In the Australian Outback season of “Survivor,” Kimmie being a vegetarian caused drama in the camp and also during one of their unfortunate gross-food challenges. (She wouldn’t eat the first item she was supposed to because it was a mammal, so the other team chose her to represent her t...

Common mistakes new vegetarians make
2008-03-09 00:22:00 This may seem a bit shocking, but many new vegetarians actually gain weight when they stop eating meat. As a vegetarian, you must adjust to an entirely new vegetarian food pyramid. Years of eating patterns must be re-programmed. The golden rule of vegetarianism is that you need protein to feel full. If you?re still hungry after a meal, then you probably didn?t eat enough protein. Many new vegetarians gain weight because they find themselves not getting full after a meal. In turn, they eat more and start snacking.

Reese Witherspoon And Jake Gyllenhaal Not Vegetarians After All?
2008-03-06 16:24:00 Ok, I’m totally confused! Reese Witherspoon has been nominated (I believe on more than one occasion) for PETA’s World’s Sexiest Vegetarian Award and Jake Gyllenhaal is casually known in the vegetarian world as perhaps, probably a Veg Head. So what the hell is this about? Justjared.com, a friend of Ecorazzi and a popular online gossip site, is ...

Vegetarians Be A-Ware!
2007-09-21 00:36:00 Vegetarians may be at risk of not consuming enough vitamin A and iron and should increase the amount of dark-colored fruits and vegetables in their diets. This is the latest recommendation from the Institute of Medicine panel, which adjusted the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) of vitamin A and several other nutrients. Vegetarians generally rely on foods such as carrots, broccoli and sweet potatoes to meet their vitamin A requirement, but new research suggests the body is only able to absorb about half the amount of usable nutrient as was previously thought. Non-vegetarians typically consume enough vitamin A, which is essential for reducing the risk of birth defects and guaranteeing optimal vision, from dairy products, fish and liver. The RDA for vitamin A is now 900 micrograms per day for men and 700 micrograms per day for women. This requirement can be met by eating a half-cup of cooked carrots. As for iron, vegetarians may need to double their intake because the body absor...
Vegetarians qualify for cheaper life insurance
2007-09-05 16:56:00 Vegetarians have long claimed that their diet means that they are healthier than the meat-eating counterparts and now it seems that at least one life insurance company agrees. Pointing to the belief that vegetarians suffer less fatal illnesses such as cancer, not-for-profit firm Animal Friends Insurance (AFI) are offering up to 6% discount for those who forego meat. AFI spokeswoman Elaine Fairfax said: "The risk of vegetarians suffering certain cancers is reduced by up to 40 per cent and from heart disease by up to 30 per cent. However, they are still required to pay the same life insurance premiums as those who eat meat."The life insurance industry needs to acknowledge the impact of life expectancy as a result of opting for a vegetarian lifestyle and reduce premiums accordingly." She added. The figures on the possibility of being affected by certain cancers and heart disease are borne out by numerous studies including the China Health Project, the Dickerson and Davies study of 1986...

Difficult Contingencies for Vegetarians
2007-08-10 05:47:00 Here?s something I have to admit I had not thought about: what options are available to vegetarians serving in Iraq? Betchitty put together these clips from her year in Iraq about what she did and did not eat. I can?t remember the sequence of Youtube-golf that brought to this interesting little film, but do have a look. And, speaking of difficult contingencies for vegetarians, what is one to do when they run out of vegetarian lasagna? Oh, bless my soul!

Cooking Tasty BBQ Food for Vegetarians
2007-07-30 20:08:00 Yes, it's true, vegetarians can enjoy barbecues too! If you are a meat-eater with some vegetarian guests coming round for a barbecue, it is very easy to rustle up some tasty vegetarian food. There are also some more challenging options for the vegetarian host or the brave carnivore!Option number one for vegetarians is to cook some shop-bought veggie burgers or sausages. If it's a ‘bring your own meat' barbecue this is probably what vegetarians will bring. Now, some people hate meat substitutes, but most vegetarians quite like them, and will be quite happy with a veggie sausage, particularly with some good relish and salad in a bun. However, there are lots of other things you can cook for vegetarians which will be a little more impressive - and more than likely the meat-eaters will like them too. Halloumi cheese is always popular, and very easy to cook. This is a firm cheese that doesn't melt when cooked, so you can slice it, or cube it and stick it on skewers, and cook over the...
Kareena and Madhavan are cutest vegetarians
2007-07-29 15:21:00 Kareena Kapoor and Madhavan have been voted cutest vegetarians of this year. The two have been chosen by People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) after an online poll.Kareena Kapoor is flattered by the recognition particularly because she hasn?t been a vegetarian all her life. Only a year and a half back she quit eating non-veg food after being prompted by her boyfriend Shahid Kapur .Shahid himself was one of the hopefuls for the contest. He, too, hasn?t been a veggie all his life, but converted a few years back.On the other hand, Madhavan (Ajay of Rang De Basanti ), has been a lifelong vegetarian. He appreciates the recognition by PETA but finds the tag ?cutest? a bit odd for a person of his age (37).Other Bollywood veggies who were in contention for the contest were John Abraham , Shahid Kapur, Mallika Sherawat and Amrita Rao .
Vegetarians: Smart (But Still Annoying)

Researchers said it could explain why people with higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity rates. Lucky for you: It's never to late to change. Ambivalent vegetarians
2007-07-10 21:46:00 There?s an article today in MSNBC?s health section on one semi-vegetarian?s quest to reconcile her craving for meat with her knowledge that the animals who become that meat suffer terror and pain in the process.Of course, that?s a conundrum, and no doubt it?s an issue that every human who gives this any thought at all faces every time s/he picks up a fork, especially if you?re someone who struggles with the need for some meat despite the desire to be ?purely? vegetarian. (As a vegan who has utterly no desire or craving for meat myself, I nonetheless struggle with this too, somewhat, because of the meat I feed my kits.) But, here?s the thing (and I know this may likely offend some people at first, so bear with me for a moment). I don?t doubt that we would not question a natural predator?s need to kill a gazelle, for example, be it feline or canine, in the necessary pursuit of food. That gazelle may very well experience some pain and terror in the process, but short of exterminating t...

Carrie Underwood and Kevin Eubanks Named Sexiest Vegetarians
2007-06-27 09:00:00 Carrie Underwood and Kevin Eubanks have been named this years world's sexiest vegetarians in a contest sposored by PETA. Underwood, 24, a Grammy-winning country singer, won the title in 2005. Eubanks, 49, leader of NBC's Tonight Show band, is a newcomer to the winner's circle. Eubanks leapt ahead of his competitors with help from Jay L eno, who encouraged viewers to vote for Eubanks and bring honor to the late-night NBC talk show. I'm gonna keep this campaign going, Leno said during a recent show after sharing a photo of a shirtless Eubanks with his audience. Leno said the shot, in which Eubanks is holding a backpack and posing against a woodsy backdrop, was not doctored. Runners-up in the contest, which the animal rights group said drew more than 110,000 votes on its web site, included Joaquin Phoenix, Milo Ventimiglia, Kristen Bell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jared Leto and Lisa Edelstein. Last year, Prince and Bell, who starred on the Veronica Mars TV series, were picked as the two...

How do you handle ?militant? vegans and vegetarians?
2007-06-15 05:37:00 Okay, this might seem an odd thing for a fellow vegan to say, but I don?t like it when other vegans/vegetarians think *everyone* should be vegan/vegetarian, or even worse, if they become confrontational to try to ?persuade? others to adopt their point of view. I realize this is a relatively small group of people, but I?ve seen it happen a few times and it usually makes me cringe in embarrassment. Unfortunately, every so often when I tell someone I?m a vegetarian (I usually don?t say ?vegan? in general company just in passing anymore because too many people are unfamiliar with the term and at least once in the past have thought it means I?m part of a peculiar religious sect), they?re afraid I?m going to start to lecture them on the evils of meat eating right there on the spot. That?s too bad, not just because I think it?s unfair to them, but because I think it makes it harder to connect and work together to make some positive changes happen that could help us both. For instance, curr...

Its true: "vegetarians are really crackpots"
2007-04-22 23:11:00 Frequently dismissed as cranks, their fussy eating habits tend to make them unpopular with dinner party hosts and guests alike. But now it seems they may have the last laugh, with research showing vegetarians are more intelligent than their meat-eating friends. A study of thousands of men and women revealed that those who stick to a vegetarian diet have IQs that are around five points higher than those who regularly eat meat. Writing in the British Medical Journal, the researchers say it isn't clear why veggies are brainier - but admit the fruit and veg-rich vegetarian diet could somehow boost brain power. The researchers, from the University of Southampton, tracked the fortunes of more than 8,000 volunteers for 20 years. More on this crackpot news can be seen at: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/-news/article-23378331-details/V-egetarians+are+more+intelligent-,+says+study/article.do
