Verizon wants Alltel enough to pay $27 billion
2008-06-04 23:28:00
Just off the heels of sewing up most of the 700 MHz spectrum, that big telco some of us like to refer to as Darth continues to expand his empire instead of investing his capital to better serve the territory he already controls. While the current customers of the dark helmeted one will do without 4G service for at least another 3-4 years, V is in talks to acquire Alltel. If successful, the Verizon empire will eclipse AT&T as the world’s largest. While the details of the deal were still being worked out one person who asked not to be named said that the $27 billion valuation could be comprised of mostly debt and a smaller amount of cash. Alltel had $23.35 billion in long-term debt on its balance sheet at the end of the first quarter. The ownership structure of Verizon Wireless — 55 percent owned by Verizon Communications Inc and 45 percent owned by Vodafone Group Plc — would not change under the deal the person said. (Reuters)

Verizon launches the Samsung Glyde
2008-05-17 13:34:00
One of the worst-kept secrets in Verizon stable is finally getting official today; thats right, ladies and gentlemen, meet the Glyde from Samsung. Wearing CDMA guts underneath its F700 clothing, the fashion-friendly QWERTY slider offers a 2 megapixel cam with flash and autofocus, GPS, the full range of Bluetooth profiles, microSD slot, and a true HTML browser. Unlike its crosstown competition ? the LG Voyager ? the Glyde doesn?t offer support for Verizon?s VCAST TV service, but we imagine most folks will consider that a minor (read: nonexistent) inconvenience. Look for the phone to start circulating into retail channels this week for a princely $249.99 on contract after $50 rebate. [Via Engadget]
