Vesak Reflection on the Medical Profession
2008-06-10 10:49:00 Vesak Reflection on the Medical Profession by Nalin Swaris - The Island ' News Paper ?Physicians? as the very term implies deal with the body, which is subject to sickness, decay and death. As such physicians seem to be engaged in a Sisyphean task ? an absurd, but for many lucrative, preoccupation devoted to propping up what Shakespeare called "this muddy vesture of decay". But if we shed the devaluation of the body on the basis of an assumed dichotomy of body and soul or the body and a rebirthing identity consciousness in mainstream Buddhism, we will have an exhilarating perspective on human existence. It helps us to cultivate a holistic view of the human person as a totality of vital processes or synergies. Whatever our religion, ethnicity or social status all human beings are subjected to the paradoxical character of the human condition. We must all die. What ethics ...
Full moon Poya day of Vesak ? 2552
2008-06-10 10:48:00 Full moon Poya day of Vesak ? 2552 by Walter Wijenayake Today is the full moon Poya day of Vesak in the Buddhist year 2552, as well as the 19th day of May 2008 as per the Gregorian calendar ? the day on which the birth, the englightenment and the final passing away of the Buddha occurred within a span of 80 years over two and half millennia ago, exactly 2632 years ago today. A noble prince who was destined to be the greatest religious teacher of the world was born on the full moon Poya day of Vesak in the year 623 BC at Lumbini Park at Kapilavattu on the Indian borders, to the King Suddhodana of the aristocratic Sakya clan, the ruler of the sakyas (in the modern Nepal) and the queen Maha Maya of the Koliya clan. On the fifth day after the birth of the prince he was named Siddhartha which means ?wish fulfilled?. On the seventh day Queen Maha Maya breathed her last. Th...
Significance of Vesak
2008-06-03 22:43:00 Significance of Vesak www.dailymirror.lkThe significance of Vesak lies with the Buddha and his universal peace message to mankind. As we recall the Buddha and his Enlightenment, we are immediately reminded of the unique and most profound knowledge and insight which arose in him on the night of his Enlightenment. This coincided with three important events which took place, corresponding to the three watches or periods of the night. During the first watch of the night, when his mind was calm, clear and purified, light arose in him, knowledge and insight arose. He saw his previous lives, at first one, then two, three up to five, then multiples of them .. . ten, twenty, thirty to fifty. Then 100, 1000 and so on.... As he went on with his practice, during the second watch of the night, he saw how beings die and are reborn, depending on their Karma, how ...
Verse for Vesak that contains a hidden story
2008-05-31 12:21:00 Verse for Vesak that contains a hidden story The Buddha?s birth is revealed in a scholarly unlocking of a cryptic poem By Sandadas CoperahewaThe Sunday Times .LK ----------------- Riddle poems are an important part of the Sri Lankan literary tradition. These ingenious brain-teasers in poetic form constitute a centuries-old art form, going back as far as the 13th century. The participants would compose riddles on the spot, and these compositions would be analysed, word by word, and then explained. What is interesting is that a fair cross-section of the population took part in these intellectually challenging exercises, suggesting an unusually high level of literary sophistication among the common people of past times. The riddle poem was especially popular in the intellectually alert and active Kotte period. (Unfortunately most of the Kotte-period riddle poems have disappeared as a result of neglect and a gradual lack of ...
Vesak Day
2008-05-21 17:59:00 This Monday was Vesak Day's extended holiday and it was the last holiday until August, which made working life quite miserable.I was still "playing" with my website and found it a hassle to piece my blog and main website together, and it took up too much of my holiday.Dinner was at Chinatown at the famous good and cheap stall which sold sting ray. The best thing was that my whole family went together and peace finally regained in my family. The stupid cold war was really crappy and I hated it happen just because of something not to be mentioned and yet was anticipated long ago.I went to fix my nose pads for the spectacles. Then, we had a short shopping session at the cheap toiletry shop before getting some expensive cleaners for the air-conditioners. We camped inside People's Park Complex for a cream that would form into stone, which was used for mending house. Next, we shopped at the CK store before crossing over to the other branch near Chinatown Complex. I was quite fascinated ...

4 Compassionate Teachings Learned From Vesak Day
2008-05-19 10:04:00 The significance of Vesak lies with the Buddha and his universal peace message to mankind. In most Buddhist temples all over the world, believers will gather to remember Prince Siddhatha. About 2,550 years ago, Prince Siddhatha was born in Lumbini, India during a full moon in the month of Vesak. This wisdom and light that flashed and radiated under the historic Bodhi Tree at Buddha Gaya in the district of Bihar in Northern India, more than 2500 years ago, is of great significance to human destiny. I would like to share this day with the teachings i have remembered till this very day that Buddha had taught all of us.Giving up the four sightsOn the first three trips, he saw sickness, old age and death. He asked himself, "How can I enjoy a life of pleasure when there is so much suffering in the world?" On his fourth trip, he saw a wandering monk who had given up everything he owned to seek an end to suffering. "I shall be like him." Bloggers are tempt by the term "make money online" but...

The True Meaning of Vesak
2007-05-02 18:11:00 Two nights of blatant, incessant, lame Sinhalese songs. The kind that revolve around the wide range of flora in Sri Lanka and elsewhere. The vesak night and the night after have been very noisy for there is a musical fanfare right outside my home. No wait? it?s not a musical show. Oh my? a Dansalak. Nothing but the evidence of the pathetic state of this country. Even the religion is now been modernized, monetized and molded to suit the sinful desires of the people. However, the two mornings were rather blissful. With every TV channel telecasting Buddhist Dharma Deshana with minor interruptions to allow for the commercial advertisements, I listened, knowing for a fact that the general behavior of the Buddhists was to change at night. Oh the kinds I would meet on a vesak night? Whistling teenagers on their fancy bikes and wearing devil masks trying to make way through the hoards of crowds fleeing towards the town to see the giant, glimmering pandols. The disturbed adults indul... |
