Illicit Drug Use Among OEF and OIF Veterans
2008-08-28 01:25:00
Is substance and alcohol abuse increasing among our returning veterans? Several studies have shown that soldiers returning from these wars are dealing with undiagnosed problems such as TBI, PTSD, and are unfortunately medicating themselves with alcohol and drugs. An article in the New York Times last month captures some of this sentiment. In After the Battle, ...
2 perspectives from Denver: Veterans, and youth
2008-08-25 15:49:00
I've spoken with several veterans of U.S. military service in Denver, and unsurprisingly they mostly express strong support for the Democratic candidate. One outspoken Viet Nam vet was basing his support on his assessment of the lack of support for vets he percieved in Senator McCain's voting record.Generally, however, I was hearing more "Pro-Obama" sentiment expressed than I was "anti-McCain" on Sunday, as the visitors to the city took on a distinctly Democratic leaning on the eve of the opening day's events. Oliver Lawrence, for instance, is an Air Force veteran of both Korea and Viet Nam, a fifth generation descendant of slaves who has lived in Georgia all his life. Taking in the pre-convention activities, he describes feeling a very different sort of energy among the delegates when compared to previous election cycles.Oliver also spent the late 50s on duty in Wyoming, when duty sometimes meant babysitting ICBMs, as it did in his case. I chatted with him as we walked along...

Veterans Suicides Are Still On The Rise
2008-06-06 22:07:00
The Associated Press ran an article entitled ?Army suicides reported up again at 115? on May 29, 2008. As I reviewed my April 24th post on Military Spouse Press regarding veteran suicides, I started to rethink about the significant connection between the OEF/OIF conflict and suicides. Many studies are stating that these suicide numbers could ...

Salute to Veterans, by US Rep. Ron Paul
2008-05-27 07:00:00
Most of my efforts on Capitol Hill are focused on reducing the federal government?s size and scope, but I make an exception for a very important group of people. Our nation?s men and women in uniform commit a selfless act of patriotism when they take up arms in defense of our country. As a veteran myself, I salute all those currently serving, or who have served in our armed forces. Our nation owes them a debt of gratitude for their sacrifices, their courage, their time away from friends and family, and the dangers they undertake. This Memorial Day we honor our soldiers and vets, we remember those who never came home, or who have since passed on. Above all, we acknowledge our respect for all who have served in the military. Congress has considered several bills this past week that would affect veterans. Many of the measures are very positive. I applaud efforts to shore up health care for veterans, and make sure that veterans know about the services available to them. I stron...
Memorial Day Truth | The astounding rate of suicide among US war veterans
2008-05-26 19:24:00
"In this war ? as in others ? I am less interested in honoring the dead than in preventing the dead."- Butler Shafferthe other day i was just glancing through the book Seat of the Soul by Gary Zukov and somewhere one line really struck me which says, "Since the end of the Vietnam War, three times more veterans have taken their own lives than the number of men and women who were killed during the war."i was astounded. astounded because of the message it carries. astounded because of the manifestation of so much collective negative KARMA in such fashion.that line got me curious about suicide rate among soldiers and war veterans. previously i read some other statistics about high rate of suicide (often not reported in public media) among the young soldiers in iraq and afghanistan. so i was looking for more factual evidences and came across some very resourceful reports.some reports quote figure as high as 120 suicide per week by former gulf war / iraq war veterans across the country*. ...

Honoring Our Veterans
2008-05-23 00:00:00
Branson has long been a destination for America's veterans. Veterans are honored here every day, year-round. Thousand of folks line the downtown sidewalks every November for the Annual Veterans Day Parade. It has always been sponsored by American Legion Post 220. Would you believe that this year will be the 75th year?! It is one of the best-attended Veterans Day events in the nation. At the music shows, veterans have always been asked to stand and be recognized. It has always been heartwarming to see veterans standing to applause and recognition, and it always brings moisture to my eyes that I cannot deny. Branson and Missouri believe in our country, our veterans and family values. It is one of the joys and pleasures of living in the Ozarks!

Akaka (D-HI), Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, elatedly applauded his colleagues in the Senate for passing S. 1315, the Veterans Benefits Enhancement Act of 2007 by a vote of 96 to 1. Prior to voting on final passage of the bill, the Senate debated an amendment to remove a provision providing a limited pension for Filipino World War II veterans residing in the Philippines. This amendment was defeated by a vote of 56 to 41, with Akaka leading the charge for the Filipino veterans' pension. "The Filipino veterans of World War II fought bravely under U.S. military command, helping us win the war only to lose their veteran status by an Act of Congress. I commend my colleagues for supporting those veterans who stood with us," said Akaka. Akaka continued, "I am also very pleased that the Veterans Benefits Enhancement Act of 2007 can finally move forward. This bill makes needed improvements to veterans' benefits by expanding and increasing suppo...
