Minot AFB Flood Victims - Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah and Happy New Year
2011-12-20 19:25:00
Airmen giving "thank yous" to Home Depot reps World events can flood our minds with so much information and unless it impacts us directly it is quickly forgotten! How many remember the floods in June this year in North Dakota? Did you know that more than 1,000 airmen and their families from Minot Air Force Base were displaced and had their homes wrecked by the flooding? I had to think about how that would impact their Christmas/Holidays this year. Well, they have not been forgotten. It is an early Christmas for some of those families who struggled to recover with 135 new appliances (refrigerators, washers and dryers and stoves) delivered to 45 families this week! Operation Homefront, The Home Depot Foundation, Minot?s Operation Warmheart and General Electric contributed resources, donations, discounts and delivery of approximately $65,000 worth of appliances to these deserving families. Amy Palmer, COO, Operation Homefront, Milton Arneson, The Home Depot, Department Head...

Here is the video of the Dilley's as they were surprised at their local Home Depot! But wait we have more to announce!   While speaking with the Home Depot public relations folks who worked the contest, they said they were "so touched by all the military family stories".  As a result, they have decided to give all the contestants a gift of $5,000 for home improvements on top of the $500 gift card they received when nominated. So Adam Ortega's family of Ft Drum, whom MilitaryAvenue nominated (see "This Army Family deserves the "Give the Gift of Good") will receive a huge home improvement to make life easier for Adam who has a traumatic brain injury and PTSD.  The Ortegas of Ft Drum A field service team will be contacting Adam and Monica this week to determine where they can best be ...
#79 of 101 Ways to Thank a Veteran: Send a Christmas Card
2011-12-14 14:08:00
Have you read 101 Ways to Thank a Veteran? They were written with Veterans Day in mind but many for all year round. 79. Remember Veterans during other holidays, especially those without family. Send a Thanksgiving card, Christmas card or Valentines card, to either a Vet that you know or through a VA Hospital or VFW. - http://www.militaryavenue.com/w-ays_to_thank_veteran Last night after dinner, we cleared the dishes, did our usual cleanup routine and then I pulled out the craft supplies.  Glitter, paint, glue, markers, stock-paper and oh so much more Time to make Christmas Cards for a special Veteran in my life, my Grandfather (and Grandmother).   They are far from family, not able to travel as easily, but loved oh so much! Army to Drawdown by 50,000 - The head ?Scout? of the Army?s Enlisted Force
2011-12-08 15:29:00
SMA Chandler with 170th IBCT (see below for photo credit) Sergeant Major of the Army (SMA), Raymond F. Chandler took some of his critical time to speak with the Bloggers Roundtable on Wednesday. He said felt like the lead Scout of the Army?s enlisted force and wanted to give us a feel of what the enlisted soldiers where concerned about and how the Army was dealing with their issues. The SMA was lively, interested in our questions and provided some great responses as he described an ?amazing Army?. He told us we were at a crossroads in the Army with reduced budgets and a drawdown of forces that will impact everyone. After he made opening remarks, I asked if he felt that the Army was taking care of the troops that were separating or retiring with employment information and assistance. He said this was a ?huge concern? and that they were ?doing the best we can?. Recent efforts within the Department of Labor, VA and White House have resulted in a coordinated program to meet the c...
VOW to Hire Veterans Act and ?WOW? Come Together for Veterans Seeking Emplo
2011-12-07 17:34:00
A VOW from Congress and a big WOW for Sears! Citing Labor Department statistics with 900,000 unemployed veterans in October this year and with more returning from Iraq as the war ends there, David Works, Senior Vice President Talent & Human Capital Services for Sears, excitedly explained to MilitaryAvenue how they were increasing vet hires at Sears Holdings. A Navy veteran of fast attack submarines, David highlighted the efforts of Sears to increase veteran hires by 10% in 2012 with veterans filling positions from hourly associates to store managers, global logistics, corporate level and more with military experience a plus for new hires! Challenging other corporations to support our veterans, he noted that Sears had hired 1,637 veterans as of December 1st this year!  A 200% jump from 2010!  WOW! Hiring veterans is ?not an act of goodwill? but simply ?good business? according to David who said they plan to hire from all the services, both enlisted and officer ranks...

Attention Veterans Day: Fuck off.
2011-11-11 23:02:00
I've never subscribed to the idea that we should worship people who have some professions, but not others. This applies to any job, policeman, firefighter, soldier, etc.I don't think you should get extra credit for doing your job. For example, if you're a firefighter, your job is to fight fires and save people. If you then fight a fire and save someone, you aren't a hero. You did your job. That's what you were hired to do. You did not go "above and beyond" anything. The same goes for police who fight crime and save people, or soldiers who fight wars and protect the country. It's in your job description. It's what you signed up for and are getting paid for.Now don't get me wrong, I'm glad we have such professions and wouldn't want NOT to have them. I'm just not going to pretend like someone who does their job is some kind of superman/woman.So unless we're going to have a special day for clerks, CEOs, garbage collectors and every other job that exists... shut the hell up ab...

Mount Sinai develops first screening tool for war veterans to assess trauma
2011-01-05 17:25:00
A team of researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine has developed the first web-based screening tool for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This instrument has recently been used by soldiers returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who participated in the Sixth Annual Road to Recovery Conference and Tribute in Orlando to determine if they sustained a TBI. ?Traumatic brain injury is underdiagnosed, and left untreated can have long-term cognitive, behavioral and physical effects,? said Wayne Gordon, PhD, the Jack Nash Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine and an Associate Director of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, who led the project. ?If we can intervene and diagnose TBI early, then we can prevent further complications.? Dr. Gordon and his team began working on this screening tool 20 years ago. Working in local schools, they found a surprising number of students with TBI but never reported it nor received medical attention, often...
Veterans Day Reflection
2010-11-12 05:47:00
My dad, Leo A. King, served in the military during World War II. He spoke proudly of his experiences in the "Negro" Army and how he earned the respect of his white commanding officers.  After the War he leveraged his veteran status to promote civil rights and demand equal justice in the Jim Crow South--in at least one instance before sit-ins had ever been conceived of. Sadly, I heard the story for the first time at his memorial service almost six years ago.Leo A. KingHe went down to Kansas City, KS, to visit relatives after the War. Two of my cousins were just boys then. My dad took them to the local five-and-dime for some ice cream. The way my...

Financial Tips for Active Duty Veterans Transitioning to Civilian Life

His tips include:* Call your local Veteran's Administration office once you are discharged to make sure you are registered to receive benefits. * Don't be afraid to ask questions and think outside of the box when it comes to utilizing benefits-after all, the worst they can do is say no! * Make sure you fully understand your benefits and take advantage of them. For instance, with a VA loan to buy a home you can secure financing with a  640...

Veterans Win Significant Procurement Battle
2010-10-14 18:29:00
By: Edward T. DeLisle & Craig Schroeder Last year, the United States Association of Veterans in Business ("USAVETBIZ") urged Congress for a government-wide preference in contracting and set-aside programs that extended the existing preference for service-disabled veteran owned small businesses ("SDVOSB") to all veteran-owned small businesses.  While that has not happened yet, the set aside program for SDVOSBs has been recently strengthened. On October 7, 2010, the Government Accountability Office ("GAO") issued a decision interpreting the Veterans Benefits, Health Care, and Information Technology Act of 2006, 38 U.S.C. sections 8127-8128 (Supp. III 2006) ("the Act") to require that, in certain circumstances, architect/engineer service contracts must be set aside by the Department of Veterans Affairs ("VA") for SDVOSBs.  In the Matter of Powerhouse Design Architects & Engineers, Ltd., Powerhouse, a Pittsburgh S...
