Tiny Terrariums, Mini Gardens and Victorian Wardian Cases
2008-09-03 10:01:00 I'm switching from crafts temporarily (storing up energy for the fall-winter holiday season) and for the next month or so will be publishing all sorts of helpful indoor gardening tips to ease from the pleasures of growing things outside to the joy of growing something inside.I'm not sure what appeals to me so much about tiny things but it doesn't matter if we're talking about puppies or poppies small is cute. Not only are terrariums and miniature gardens the solution to small spaces and apartment living but they can be a beautiful addition to your interior design. You don't have to have a fancy antique Victorian Wardian case such as you see above, even a large vase, Mason jar or clear glass cookie jar works well. The key is to plan well.1. Choose your container. I like the Anchor Hocking brand of glass containers they often sell at Walmart because they're decorative and inexpensive but think of any glass container or even a piece of lava rock on a shallow dish is a beautiful ...

Call for papers: Victorian provincial architects
2008-05-06 13:33:00 A one-day colloquium to be held at the University of Liverpool, 28th November 2008. Famous names, many of them London-based, tend to dominate the history of nineteenth-century British architecture. Lesser-known figures in the regions, however, were largely responsible for building Victorian Britain. In Liverpool, the local architects William Culshaw (1806/7-1874) and Henry Sumners (1825/6-1895) were prolific designers ...

The Diets That Time Forgot
2008-04-18 10:55:00 If you get a chance and want to see me on TV then check me out on Tuesday night on Channel 4 at 9:00pm, on the last of a six part series called. The Diets That Time Forgot. Many people don't realize that diets are not a recent invention and in this unique historic experiment, nine volunteers spent 24 days testing the weight loss diets and fitness regimes that were popular in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods and the 'roaring' Twenties. This six-part series examined which plan worked best. Is it the Banting diet, first published in 1863, the 'chew chew' diet of the early 1900s, or the first calorie counting Lulu diet, one of the best selling non-fiction publications of the 1920s? Tune in and see how they got on and how much weight they lost. I work with the volunteers during the last few days of this unique experiment. I show them how to use the power of mind and hypnosis techniques.

VPOD: A Victorian Treat
2008-03-26 15:40:00 As a vintage dealer, I primarily handle items from the last few decades. Although I do have an affinity for century-old clothing--and have a gorgeous black mourning dress that I will whip out of its archival box for an evening gala someday--it's so difficult to find clothes of this age in wonderful, wearable condition. Today's VPOD, however, is a notable exception. This white linen bustle coat dates from the 1880s and has a very contemporary feel with its scalloped edging, adjustable side ruching and row of brass buttons. Even more exciting is that it's a wearable size (36-27-44 to be exact) and in sturdy, wearable condition. You sassy teens and twenty-somethings can pair it with leggings; more mature gals like myself can match it with jeans for day or satin trousers for evening. It's a true Victorian treat for a vintage fashionista!Available at Vintage Textile.(To receive the VPOD via email with detailed size, price and purchase information, sign up for my growing email mail...

Victorian House - Lordship Park
2008-02-27 12:40:00 These images are from Lordship Park an unusually large Victorian house spread over four distinctly styled floors. From the four floors the lower ground floor got my attention. The Humerous Japery of Reginald Whiskers
2008-02-18 18:29:00 February 18th, 1857.My man-servant, Botter, bought me the morning's news-papers today, as he does every day lest he wishes to receive a swift boot to the backside. Today, however, I rather wished he had not bothered, for a quick flick through the day's copy of The London Early Morning News Stories and Illustrated Plates was filled with nothing but depression; trouble with the natives in India, crime on the streets of our great nation's capital, disease rife among the filthy working-classes, and so on and so ruddy on.Is it too much to ask that I can enjoy my breakfast of grilled salmon, caviar and champagne without having the woes of those less fortunate than myself thrust in my face? Indeed, I was so enraged by the morning's news that I hurled the paper at Botter, causing him to receive many nasty paper-cuts to the face and eyeballs, which cheered me up somewhat.Happily, there is always one part of the news-paper that never fails to fill me with joy, and that is the section cont...

Review: A Victorian Rose (English Ivy Series Book 4)
2008-02-09 23:44:00 A Victorian Rose (English Ivy Series Book 4)by Catherine PalmerThis romantic story will sweep readers back in time to Victorian Yorkshire, England. Against her better judgment, young widow Clemma Laird finds herself connected to Dr. Paul Baine, a man shunned by the community. As she is drawn into Dr. Baine's lifework, she discovers the truth of his past and the pain that drives him to seek atonement. Palmer's fans will love this tender storyThis short novel brings back a character from the first in the English Ivy series. Clemma was just a child in English Ivy, and sister to the main character, Ivy Bowden. She was endearing as a little girl, and she’ll recapture your heart in a special way as an adult.A Victorian Rose takes place years later, obviously in the Victorian era, and we see Clemma as a widowed adult. Although this little book is bittersweet, it was still an enjoyable read. Life happens, and it’s not always pleasant. That is clear in this short book. But love, especi...

Victorian Premier Sledges "Backwater " Adelaide
2008-01-30 22:29:00 People in South Australia are very sensitive when people say bad things about Adelaide, which is very common. This morning, talk radio has been overflowing with aggrieved residents voicing off at the Victorian Premiers off the cuff backwater comment on Adelaide. It is the main story in the local rag, but barely gets a mention in Victoria. Chip on the collective shoulder? That said, Melbourne and Adelaide are still considered very nice places to live in a global survey. I agree, not having lived in Melbourne, but it does have much worse weather, which is high on my criteria of a nice place to live. I noticed that Kathmandu, where I lived for a year, is in the bottom ten. That may be true, but it is a lot more interesting.
