A North-South Chinese Mix Cline in SE Asia?
2008-07-11 16:24:00
The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here. Updated July 12. I am republishing this post published earlier this month because I added some photos.A question from the comments about the Are SE Asians Australoids? article:Aren't Khmer a little more Australoid than people in Vietnam (at least Northern Vietnamese), most Thai, and Laotians? There seems to be a clear cline in Southeast Asia, the areas bordering China seem to have more NE Mongoloid Admixture than those of the Malay archipelago and the Khmer. I'm basing this on appearance and not genes, which you pointed out, rightly so, as being misleading. This question keeps popping up because so many folks are convinced, based primarily on appearance, that many SE Asians are part-Australoid.First of all, the Vietnamese, Filipinos, Thai and Khmer are all quite close to the Southern Chinese genetically. Of these, believe it or not, the Fili...

On Immigration
2008-06-14 05:19:00
Updated June 18:We have quite a few folks coming to this blog who are opposed to immigration. To be honest, almost everyone in the US who is opposed to immigration is White, and to some extent, it's associated with White nationalism. There are also anti-immigrant sites out there like Vdare, but they are almost always on the crazy end of the spectrum. Vdare is not White nationalist, but they do want to end all immigration altogether. On the far moderate end of White nationalism, we have American Renaissance. I do like to hang out there because it's nice to hear real, honest talk on race for once.In general, the White nationalists on Amren want to end non-White immigration altogether.I'd like to point out that this is a crazy and extremist point of view. Furthermore, Whites are only 65% of the US in 2006 according to this chart, and possibly less. 2% of the US is Muslim, and the overwhelming majority are not Europeans. Another .5% of the population are Indian-Americans. 1% of the po...

Vietnamese Spring Rolls with Dipping Sauce
2008-06-06 13:35:00
This is another recipe I have made for the recipe swap I am in this month. I loved this one, wonderful spring rolls, I don't like vermicelli noodles so I softened some bean sprouts and used these instead. I made the suggested dipping sauce that went with these which was lovely, but I think they would also go well with a sweet chili sauce. If you would like to see the original recipe or more recipes by this chef click here.If you have been keeping up with the progress of my beautiful handcrafted camphor laurel chopping, cheese boards and Mezzaluna Boards. Alexa Rankings System changes and Vietnamese Publishers Rethink Web Metrics
2008-04-19 11:00:00
Web metrics provider Alexa just announced the New Alexa Rankings with new algorithms that pushed most of Vietnamese websites' ranking down overnight. In fact it is a good news for marketers in Vietnam since Vietnamese online publishers used to set Alexa ranking as a norm of traffic measurement and monetization. Last year a news portal in Vietnam even posted a headline saying VnExpress in Global Top 100 Websites and near the line of CNN.com and BBC Newsline. Ironically it said Alexa was the only independent and objective ranking system of web metrics worldwide. Actually many international marketers and advertisers had left Alexa for other web metrics/analytics service such as comScore, Hitwise, Compete and Nielsen//NetRatings. Among the fierce competition, comScore had became the leader with reports can send Google' shares down significantly.Since online advertising is emerging as an important piece of media and branding communication strategy of marketers in Vietnam, the need for...

Search in Vietnamese with Xalo, but Can it Go Fast?
2008-04-12 10:44:00
Vinaseek, the search engine still alive from the first wave of Vietnamese Internet just returned with new brand Xalo (means highway). With new UI and features, it is not easy to see something associated with the old Vinaseek. You can use Xalo to search web, news, blog, forum. In fact Xalo is a white label product licensed from Norway's Fast Search. As an enterprise search platform users would see the results much different from Google's user friendly ones. I do not know why Tinhvan had taken so long to localise this search engine while Singapore's SPH Search had gone faster with Rednano search service. Again I still doubt the future of Xalo as in my earlier post on Vinaseek and 2008 predictions. Of course Tinhvan could provide financing for Xalo at startup stage but with less much money spending pressure than other young startups how can Xalo produce innovative products and win users' minds?

Social Networking Services for Vietnamese Women
2008-04-04 06:34:00
One day after Yahoo announced its Shine portal for women, in Vietnam the web 2.0 startup Vinalive also stirs the social networking competition with  its PhunuNet targeting dynamic Vietnamese women. It seems that PhunuNet is following the simple but successful model of iVillage. While social networking sites are in a fierce competition seeking users and monetization with such names as Tamtay, Yobanbe, Cyworld, Zoomban etc., targeting women segment is a smart way to differentiate. PhunuNet offers useful content for women’s interests, including Love & Sex, Fashion & Beauty, Health, Lifestyle, Career & Work, Entertainment & Celebrities, Travel, Cooking, Pregnancy & Babycare, Brides, Horoscope etc. It also offers social Q&A, video sharing, groups, events and blogging tools. Not just an iVillage clone, PhunuNet has good localization approach tailored to the taste of Vietnamese women. In fact PhunuNet currently looks like a content portal rather than a web 2.0 serv...

Is the "White" IQ So Superior?
2008-03-30 10:12:00
Updated March 31:I confess that I love to beat up White nationalists, or for that matter ethnic nationalists of any sort (this is why I verbally eviscerate Zionists - they are nothing but the Jewish equivalent of White Nationalists). There is nothing like nationalism, not to mention the super brain-killer of ethnic nationalism, to turn a smart person's brain to useless mush. The problem is that beating up on WN's is cruel. It's like slapping a retarded person and ridiculing them in public. So I feel kind of guilty when I do it.For a look at what a nightmare the White Nationalist movement is, and what a racist horror it represents, check out the sanest, most moderate outlier of the movement, American Renaissance. I hang out there a lot, and post lots of comments, when they do not get deleted, which is 75% of the time.I post mostly on illegal aliens, which is all I care about race-wise, as I am utterly indifferent to the "Black problem", anti-immigration xenophobia, Islamophobia, an...

Synopsis1920s. Vietnam under colonial French ruling. Anti-French rebellions emerge all over the country to disrupt the foreign occupiers. In respond, the colonialist employed units of Vietnamese agents to track and destroy these rebels. The film follows the journey of Le Van Cuong, a French cultured undercover elite. Although branded with a perfect track record, Cuong's inner conscience is troubled by the sea of Vietnamese blood he had spilled to uphold a French washed ideal. Following an assassination of a high ranking French, Cuong is assigned to seek and kill the notorious leader of the resistance. Cuong encounters Vo Thanh Thuy, a relentless revolutionary fighter and the daughter of the rebel leader. Cuong's superior intends for him to use Thuy as a mean to get to her father but Cuong soon has feelings for her. Spicy Pho

I absolutely love Pho. The soup is always flavorful and a tad sweet - I am partial to slightly sweet food which is why I like Thai food as well.We had lunch at this Vietnamese restaurant in Darra, a suburb in Brisbane. I don't really remember the name of the place but it was near a huge Asian grocer which is well stocked with all kinds of foodstuff from most Asian countries.David and I both chose the spicy Pho with beef slices. I think it was probably the best Pho I've had and I slurped up all the soup. The Vietnamese coffee was also good. We didn't specify hot or cold coffee and it came served cold with lots of ice cubes. It turned out great.
