The Oak Park Penis: Does the Village's New Logo Look Like a Phallus?
2009-11-19 00:01:00
What would you do if your municipal branding consultant suggested at a public board meeting that your town's new logo look like a penis? That happened this week in upscale Oak Park, Illinois. As local bloggers and Twitter users in the west-suburban village continue to voice shock over the new logo, I put it to you, Chicago. Does Oak Park's new logo look like what I think it does?...
What to do with the Olympic Village site...
2009-10-14 00:06:00
The speculation is building on what might happen to the site that was going to be deveoped into Olympic Village for the 2016 games now that Chicago has lost the bid. Having worked in commercial real estate journalism for the last three years, I've heard a number of proposals for the site and many of them are resurfacing now. While it's sad to see the possibility for more affordable housing go by the wayside, I'm intrigued by some of the other options, summed up in this Clout Street arcticle Here's what I think of some of these options: -Casino: This is an old debate: tax dollars vs. neighborhood atmosphere. I think the assertation that a casino would help McCormick Place...

Mud Village for Handicrafts Men
2009-10-01 09:11:00
Concept of shifting to mud architecture us creating waves in Pakistan. It is heartening to know that a lot is happening to convert this concept in to a reality in the form of proposed Mud Village, Peerzada Festival Area, Lahore.Mud is an excellent construction material. It is being used as a building material since prehistoric times. Mud structures can still be found in a variety of climates across the globe; In Pakistan, it is most strongly associated with rural culture. The idea of mud building is now coming to urban areas. Construction of model mud village in Lahore is the case in point. Society for the Promotion of Art and Culture (SPARC), registered in Lahore since 1994, is starting construction of mud village for handicraft men. Buffalo Grove Village Board to consider re-call ordinance tonight
2009-09-21 11:38:00
Leave it up to those Republican lawyers to find new ways to try to undo elections and, at the same time, cancel the civil rights of citizens, all without cause. Buffalo Grove Village Trustee Jeffrey Berman. From the Village of Buffalo Grove official web site. The Buffalo Grove Village Board will consider the adoption of a Village elected official Recall Ordinance, tonight (Monday, September 21, 2009).  The primary sponsor of the ordinance is Village Trustee Jeffrey Berman, a lawyer and a Republican.  Village trustees run in non-partisan municipal elections, but Trustee Berman has been active in Republican Party politics. I will be there, tonight, to oppose the ordinance.  If you've ever wanted to see me in action as a social justice advocate, tonight's...

Olympic Village would make for some interesting affordable housing
2009-09-02 15:03:00
As Chicagoans watch on edge over the course of the next month to see if our city is selected for the 2016 games, the plan for the Olympic Village on the south lake shore is creating an interesting prospect for affordable housing. Yesterday, I attended a luncheon where Chicago 2016's Cassandra Francis, who is charged with helping develop the Village, spoke. To give an idea of what it might look like, she showed this video:   But the points Cassandra mae in her speech helped also explain the "legacy" mode of the project -According to a recent Crain's article, up to 30 percent of the Village's 2,500 units could become affordable housing . -While the Olympics are going on, the residential units...
Cultural Street Festival in Kathu Village
2009-08-18 15:50:00
A couple of weeks ago there happened one of those local events that (for me) makes Phuket special. The area of Phuket where we live is called Kathu, located between Patong Beach and Phuket Town. It's a big residential area with lots of sub districts (Tung Tong, Ket Ho, Bang Tong etc). We live close to the Baan Kathu area, the old village of Kathu. A walk around this area reveals an older, traditional side to Phuket and a mixture of cultures as demonstrated by the Buddhist temple and the Chinese shrine in Kathu. The area was the center of the tin mining industry which was very important in Phuket from the early 19th century up until recent years.Anyways, in the last week of July I saw this sign (above) in several places in the locality at main road junctions. I am sure many other people saw the signs too. So on 5th August in the early evening I headed to the village to see what was going on. The answer? Plenty going on. On that evening only, there was a street procession through the...
Little Village Pocket Park
2009-07-16 06:53:00
I've noticed a couple of small gardens emerge in the Little Village neighborhood in Chicago this spring and summer. Today I got a lead on who was responsible for these tiny gardens from Lee Bouchard at Urban Habitat Chicago and her suspicion that they were managed by Enlace Chicago turned out to be correct. I called the number on Enlace's website and within an hour I was at one of the locations with extra plants and seeds I wouldn't get a chance to get to this year and an eager audience of young gardeners....

Dolls Village
2009-03-03 19:30:00
One of the first places I came to know after settling down is a village Thatta Ghulamka Dheroka near Okara. The unique claim of the village to international fame is the dolls and toys made by village women that are collectors delight all over the world.Dolls made in the village have travelled to International Dolls Museum in Amsterdam and also have been put on display in the ?Themepark? at EXPO 2000 in Hannover (Germany) as one of the 767 worldwide projects - an example of thinking for 21st century. Earlier, the dolls participated in International Toy Fair in Nuremberg. These dolls show how culture goes beyond simple work of art and becomes collaboration among applied and natural sciences as well as other forces that affect our lives. The murals are painted on the parameter mud walls in the village where doll collectors and people interested in sustainable development and rural heritage from different initiative groups come and stay as paying guests. The village folks still consider ...

Village Underground.
2009-02-05 17:37:00
Village Underground.Village Underground, is the brainchild of the ambitious 29-year-old furniture designer Auro Foxcroft. Four former subway carriages and three shipping containers were positioned, secured, and transformed into open-plan working spaces, which offers a low-cost alternative in a high-rent area. The idea to use the subway trains came to Foxcroft during a funicular train ride in Switzerland. He acquired the carriages for a nominal takeaway fee, but he had to pay £25,000 for transportation. The local council provided the rooftop - an old brick warehouse; and financing came mainly from the London Rebuilding Society. A number of architects, engineers, expert consultants, and friends provided their professional services and equipment for no cost. The decommissioned tube carriages were placed on the top of a railway viaduct and so far, it has hosted exhibitions, workshops, video and photo sessions, and private parties. And the rent can be anything from £600 to £5,000 a day.(...
Village Markets (VLGEA): Split buy
2009-01-27 06:00:00
Neil Macneale (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2767) has a unique investing approach; his 2-for-1 (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=2767) portfolio is made up solely of stocks announcing 2 for 1 stock splits. His latest buy is Village Super Markets (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=vlgea) (NASDAQ: VLGEA (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/quote.htm?sym=vlgea))."With only one 2 for 1 split in December, the question is simply, is this a company I want in the portfolio or not. Village Super Markets is a nifty little company and I believe it deserves a place in the 2 for 1 portfolio."Village Super Markets operates 25 ShopRite stores in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The primary negatives are the company’s relatively small size and trading volume, which I am willing to forgive because of all the various positive factors, starting with volatility (see adjacent article)."The stock has a 'Beta' of only 0.26, meaning it is far less...

Tenhachi Japanese Restaurant in Shaugnessy Village
2008-11-05 15:00:00
We met up with Kim Ho for dinner last month. Kim Ho had been a prolific commenter on chowtimes and he also had a blog which he calls it Words of Wind. He recommended a Japanese restaurant Tenhaci which apparently is one of those places that had been blogged about many times by local Vancouver food bloggers. Tenhaci is located in the ground floor of a bed-and-breakfast place unlike the B&B that most people are accustomed to. Firstly, despite the name Shaugnessy Village it is not anywhere like the tony Shaugnessy neighborhood. Shaugnessy Village is more like a cheap hotel more than it is a B&B.
Hotel Recommendation: Sawasdee Village (Kata Beach)
2008-10-28 14:23:00
Sawasdee Village is one of the hotels I have meant to add here for a long time, and today was reminded by some customers in our dive center who raved about how beautiful it is and how well looked after they felt there. It seems to me that Sawasdee Village is no ordinary hotel. It's not a big hotel really, only about 40 rooms, built in and around an oasis of tropical gardens, orchids and pools, with a 5 star spa thrown in for good measure. It seems to me that Sawasdee Village has been around for ever... I came to Phuket in 1999 and it was there.. from what I can gather by "web research" Sawasdee Village opened in 1991. There have been a lot of improvements and additions since and now it really does seem to be well worth recommending and it's a very reasonable price for such quality. The new Baray Villa rooms look amazing (more expensive too but looks like you get a lot of extras with these rooms). I like the sound of the 8 foot beds - truly King size!Sawasdee Village gets lots of ve...
'the village boy'
2008-10-24 06:14:00
There are lessons in the first landscapes of every one's life. Mine was a vista of green paddy fields, smoking with Salt Range mist, against a setting of ribbon of River Jhelum which from distance looked like a shore of another land altogether. The rough, rugged hill range appeared uninviting against a sky withering with the morning, interrupted by the dawn's red and blue brush strokes. My first learning in life was also in the village. In villages, people still live without assessable roads or other civic amenities of this modern age. No telephone or the Internet, even the electricity is the recent phenomenon; some are still without it. You see one village and you have seen all. This was the setting where I spent first twenty year of my life savouring the freedom of adulthood. It is where I decided what (and how) I wanted to do with life. It is where my mother, brothers and friends live. It is where I return whenever my active life allows me to. It is where I want to settle and sp...

Village Sher Garh
2008-10-16 06:14:00
An old sleepy and dusty village Sher Garh lies about 20 minutes drive away from Renala Khurd (Okara). The coins found at Sher Garh prove that the place was inhabited at the time of Kushan dynasty. Though ?the name Sher Garh was given by the Governor of Molten, Faith Jang Khan after the name of Afghan King Sher Shah Sure,? wrote Abbas Khan Sarauni in his book Tarikh Sher Shah Suri.On the old bank of River Beas, it is a typical Pakistani village where farmers live like rustics in the face of urban attractions. Even the electricity and telephone are a recent phenomenon. But the village has never been out of limelight. Besides heritage conscious people from all over the world, the village is venerated by a large number of devotees. Reasons, a massive mud fort and mosque which were built in the period of Afghan Sher Shah Suri. The Vegetarian Festival: An evening walk in Kathu village
2008-10-02 17:17:00
Kathu village is one of those quiet backwaters of Phuket that barely seems touched by tourism and development. Yes, there are some new houses and appartments around, yes you can see Mercedes and new pick up trucks outside some of the houses, but this is old Phuket. The Kathu area was the center of the tin mining industry which started in the 18th century. Many of the miners were Chinese, and they settled in this part of Phuket. And it was in Kathu that the vegetarian festival started many many years ago.At this time of year, walking in the village in the area around the Chinese shrine, you can get a real time warp feeling. The firecrackers, the white clothes, the old shophouses, the shrine... I do recommend a visit. I took a walk around this evening with my wife to buy some vegetarian food and take some photos too! Tomorrow will be interesting as there will be "bladed ladder climbing" and bathing in hot oil at the shrine. See you there! Tonight I did not see any other foreigners. Ha...

Village of Lead
2008-06-14 09:21:00
When I was a youth, we'd go camping in the mountains of Colorado most summer weekends, largely to my chagrin. My appreciation of the mountains was limited to seeing them from afar, and my feeling was firmly that if I was truly meant to spend weekends up there, then there would be televisions attached to every tree. It didn't help that my father and I had significantly different ideas of "roughing it" -- he thought plumbing was an extravagance on these trips, I thought I was undergoing unnecessary hardship if I couldn't find arcade games. So my heart was not in it, and I realize now that I saw lots of cool stuff all over Colorado, but mostly I just responded with the sigh of a world-weary seven-year-old, and trudged back to the camper to drink orange soda and read Street and Smith's NFL preview, trying not to think about the episodes of the Baseball Bunch that I was missing. One of the trips was up to Leadville. I remember nothing of it -- small town, no video games. This last trip...
