The Best Vineyards in Mendoza Argentina
2009-07-03 18:41:00
Argentine wine is hot right now and Mendoza is the country’s wine capital. Here are the best vineyards in the region. There are 1000 vineyards in Mendoza, Argentina. Maybe more by the time you finish reading this. That’s how fast Mendoza’s wine scene is growing.   Mendoza, two hours by plane from Buenos Aires, is the heart and soul of Argentina’s wine country, where European settlers introduced the ancient craft of winemaking in the 19th century. The soil and climate of the Mendoza area make this ideal wine country. It’s also the adventure tourism center of Argentina’s Cuyo region, offering world-class hiking, biking, fishing, rafting, horseback riding and skiing, all within reasonable driving distance of downtown Mendoza. But wine is the main draw in Mendoza, and before you go, it’s best to get a primer on the local grapes.  The tourist can make the famous “Route of wine”. Argentine vineyards share recipes and techniques with touri...

Alexander Valley Vineyards
2008-05-21 12:36:00
I realized shortly after heading to Sonoma that I had far too many posts left to make from the DC International Wine and Food Festival and the trip to Sonoma was only going to make me further behind on those. I was entirely right and found it more interesting to talk to you all about our actual experiences in Sonoma, so the posts about the Festival took a backseat. I still have plenty of vineyard visits from Sonoma to tell you about, but I'm going to throw one in now from the Festival.Though to be honest, we actually visited Alexander Valley Vineyards on our very first trip to Sonoma in 2006. I've reviewed some of their wines here before, most recently the delicious Cyrus for Open That Bottle Night. When I saw the vineyard at the Festival I was very interested to taste the new line-up, especially since OTBN had only been a few days before.2006 Estate Chardonnay: 70% Stainless Steel, 30% Neutral barrel with no maloactic. Pineapple, pear, nicely done.2005 Temptation Zin: 92% Zin...
The Bohan-Dillon 2006 Hirsch Vineyards Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
2008-05-04 05:04:00
Visiting Selland's Market earlier this week, to bring home some of their fabulous carnitas for dinner, I could not resist taking a look at their wines and of course "accidentally" one of them ended up coming home with me...Tonight it was time to try the "errant bottle", a Bohan-Dillon 2006 Hirsch Vineyards Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Made by Hirsch Vineyards from 97% estate fruit for the cost of $29.99 (at Selland's), compared to the Hirsch Vineyards 2006 Sonoma Coast for $55 (made from the same fruit), I hoped for it to be a high quality wine for a bargain price. It has a clear ruby red color in the glass. The nose displays cherry, raspberry, red currant, tobacco leaves, tea, and vanilla notes. The palate showcasing light plum, cherry, sweet tobacco, and heat from the alcohol (14.6%), backed up by good acidity and sturdy tannins. The heat being a little unflattering, but as you sip the wine and get to know it, it becomes less noticeable.Overall I definitely enjoyed this wine. As I said...
Meeting New Wines
2008-05-01 13:57:00
On our second day in Sonoma, we were lucky enough, as I've mentioned before, to have Patrick of Iridesse Wines showing us around. The second stop of the day was to a group of wineries who share space in the same building complex that I likely would never have found without his guidance. We had intended to go to several of the wineries in the space, but after the first, got a phone call and took a detour for a private tasting over at Michel Schlumberger. Prior to knowing of our detour, Patrick directed Matt, Russ, and I into Camellia Cellars to taste some excellent wines, where we also got to meet the owner! We tasted through their whole line up (and more, including some wine that won't be released until this fall and came away very happy!2007 First Kiss: $22, Proprietor's Blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat, and Viognier, 12.7% alcohol by volume. Melon, lemon, tropical, floral, crisp, the Sauvignon Blanc really shows through in this one.2006 Sangiovese: $25. Tart, tannic, tart fru...
Alexander Valley Vineyards Zinfandel
2008-04-25 00:00:00
The next series we're doing on Cheap Wine Ratings is California Zinfandel.  At times Zinfandel is one of my favorite varietals but sometimes it ends up just way too sweet and jammy.  Zinfandel is really a chameleon though, as its wine can have a variety of characteristics from jar-full-of-jam fruit, ...

Stone Corral Vineyard 2005 Edna Valley Pinot Noir by Talley Vineyards
2008-04-10 00:43:00
Strolling through Winecask Wine Store in Santa Barbara we saw a bottle of the Stone Corral Vineyard 2005 Edna Valley Pinot Noir produced by Talley Vineyards. We have enjoyed several vintages of their Rincon Vineyard and Rosemary Vineyard Pinot Noir, and having heard about the newer Stone Corral Vineyard, but never tasted it, we just had to give it a try. At $55 a bottle we saved it for enjoyment with a Saturday night dinner. This wine has a clear, dark garnet color in the glass. The nose shows floral notes, raspberry, and subtle round oak.The palate displaying raspberry, restrained cherry, spice and notes of green tea. The fruit persistant and showing throughout the whole palate. Relatively high acidity and tight tannins with a ?green? finish. We really liked this complex, still refined pinot with plentiful fruit that made a statement without being to large or lush. Although very enjoyable right now I would definitely put this away for a year or two as for the tannins to loose the gree...

Bordeaux Vineyards on the Market
2008-03-02 17:57:00
The New York Times is reporting that a large number of Russian and Indian buyers are scouting around for small Bordeaux vineyards. With wine consumption in France dropping, midrange wines are hurt the most. The Bordeaux region of Entre-Deux-Mers is particularly affected by this. A 150 acre tract of land along with a 6,500 square foot chateau can be purchased for as little as $3 million.

Alma Rosa Winery and Vineyards wine tasting
2008-02-02 22:36:00
Spending the weekend in Santa Barbara I decided to go to the Alma Rosa wine tasting at East Beach Wine Company last night. Stepping into the shop the place was packed and it took a minute before we reached the counter and could pay for two tastings and get our glasses. To our delight the owners, Thekla and Richard Sanford was there themselves, with their daughter Blakeney, to pour and talk to the customers. Nothing beats the opportunity to talk to either the owners or wine maker as you taste a winery's wine. Both Thekla and Richard where very nice and pleasant, and spent quite a bit of time with us. It was a true pleasure to talk to them, and you could tell how passionate and excited they are about their wines.A short bio: Richard Sanford was the first to plant Pinot Noir in Santa Rita Hills in 1970. 1981 him and Thekla started Sanford Winery, and after parting with it in 2005, they founded Alma Rosa Winery and Vineyards at the location of their old winery. All grapes are grown org...
2006 HUNT COUNTRY VINEYARDS SEMI-DRY RIESLING
2008-01-25 23:13:00
This review is one I've had on my desk for quite some time but just hadn't gotten around to posting it to the site. A 2006 Hunt Country Vineyards Semi-Dry Riesling from the Finger Lakes Region of New York. This one had an excellent nose with a vision of "freshness" coming to mind when I first took it fully into my nose. After tasting I noted that it also tasted fresh and light on the palate with just the right amount of sweetness. True to its name, it exhibited a little bit of dryness but not the kind of dryness that makes you feel like you're drinking air. Nice, smooth finish made this an overall enjoyable one. I easily awarded it 4 Corkscrews. It retails on the Hunt Country Vineyards website for $13.99 but looks like it is going fast as they only have 5 cases left. Get it while you can! Sit Long, Talk Much, Laugh Often, Drink this Riesling!

Lavaux, a historic paradise of vineyards
2008-01-22 11:55:00
[i]Small Swiss territory considered World Heritage[/i] [imgl]http://www.mendozaesvino.-com.ar/blog/files/TN_1092446.jp-g[/imgl]At the edge of Lake Leman, compared to the Alps, implausible terraces have been growing vines for centuries. Today is World Heritage this prodigy of nature and human effort. A story of Jesus Torbado, The World, shows the history of Lavaux vineyards, which could not apasionar to travelers, except if they knew that these vineyards scattered, with dozens of others in the village of Chexbres and thirteen other neighboring villages, were seen last summer by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. No other vineyard has deserved such honour and what Switzerland could not boast of wine production. Lavaux, on the shores of the lake, does not reach the nine hectares, housing 28000 inhabitants. Dicen que los romanos llevaron hasta all el cultivo de las vides, pero hay constancia de que se cultivaban con esmero en el siglo XII y que desde 1797, cuatro veces por siglo, se han...

Pisoni Vineyards and Winery 2004 Estate Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
2008-01-06 00:17:00
Last night we opened a bottle with dinner that I had very high expectations of. I have had several vintages of the Pisoni Vineyards and Winery Estate Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir before, and they have always been great. I assumed and hoped that the 2004 wouldn't let me down either. The color in the glass is a vivid deep garnet. The nose exudes black cherry, dark raspberry, notes of blackberry, sweet violet, and a touch of tobacco (?).On the palate big, broad fruit and berries with ripe cherry, dark raspberry, vanilla, an earthy touch, and slight tart fruit at the finish. The acidity is plentiful and the tannins integrated with a young edge to them. This wine has a great backbone and complexity, and I wish I had another bottle to open up in a year or two to see how it develops. As you understand this wine did not disappoint me what so ever and I would say that this is one of the more complex vintages of this wine. The earlier ones that I have had have been even more ripe, lush and...
Climate change affecting Australian vineyards
2008-01-04 03:51:00
[imgl]http://www.mendozaesvino.-com.ar/blog/files/03012008_2_1.-gif[/imgl]Some claim that they are the direct consequences of climate change. Others, however, accuse the Australian producers of "complacency" and inability to adapt to new market needs. The truth is that the widespread lack of water plaguing the country for several years now begins to move bill to the wine industry, which is failing to provide the world with a wine excellent value. Direct impact of climate change on the australian wines. The harvest this year has fallen 32% compared with the average of the past five years, while analysts of the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation (AWBC) confirmed in early December that the forecasts for 2008 were of particular concern: will move from a maximum of 1.3 million tons and a minimum of 800,000 tonnes, which would mean that in no case exceed the levels of the last harvest. The water reserves simply are not enough to "take a drink" to all vineyards of the nation, especially...

Vino Volo and Caymus Vineyards 2005 Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon
2007-12-06 02:39:00
Going to Las Vegas last weekend our flight out of Sacramento was delayed for 4 hours, which gave us plenty of time to kill in the airport's wine bar, Vino Volo. Vino Volo is a chain of airport wine bars with five current locations; Seattle, Sacramento, Washington DC, Baltimore and New York, and with plans to expand and open many more locations in the upcoming year.Having the option to visit Vino Volo made me very excited as airport food and drinks, in general, gives me the shivers... Vino Volo adds a touch of sophistication with good quality wine by flight, glass or bottle. Small plates are also served. We tried the cheese plate, chicken panini and the New York skewers with mashed potatoes and peas. All a step above all other airport food I have ever had. I started of with the Pinot Noir wine flight featuring a California pinot from the Molnar Family 2005 Poseidon's Vineyard, from France the Louis Latour 2002 VOLNAY, and from New Zealand the Nevis Bluff 2003 Pinot Noir. A nice fli...

As soon as I got here, I started looking for my library of images from my trips to France and Italy, and found a few that I wanted to paint. 2006 STANDING STONE VINEYARDS RIESLING
2007-11-08 01:22:00
Wednesday, November 7, 2007A very special day today and unfortunately I'm out of town for it. #1 will know what I'm talking about. Today's reviewed wine, the 2006 Standing Stone Vineyards Riesling, is from a region that, quite honestly, I knew nothing about when I had the opportunity to try this wine. Man have I been missing out. Not only on wines from this region, the Finger Lakes Region of New York, but this grape as well. #1 and I popped the cork on this one recently and poured a couple of glasses for tasting and enjoyment. Not expecting much I was shocked how good this was! An off-dry Riesling, this one had a very "clean, mineral" nose, which both of us normally like. On the tongue we noted peaches and pears and more of the clean, mineral taste that was picked up on the nose. A nice finish based on excellent acidity and balance. Don't let the off-dry comment scare you off as this is far from a typical "dry" wine and is loaded with flavor. This one retails for abou...

Virus strikes Maharashtra vineyards, imports stopped
2007-11-05 05:21:00
The booming Indian wine industry is facing a crisis with two deadly viruses affecting farms across Maharashtra, which accounts for 94 per cent of country?s wine production. While the viruses, blamed on imported plants, were first detected in 2002, fresh cases have been reported this year. The Indian Express reports on the virus fears in Maharashtra and discusses the confusion over how big an issue the threat is. Give us your opinion on the virus threat.Pictured are vines infected by a virus. Viruses have a dangerous relationship with grapes and have certainly left their mark on the evolution of wine. For example, inadvertently introduced to Europe in 1860 on imported North American vinestocks, phylloxera wiped out a significant portion of European wine grapes in the mid-to-late 1800s. Read more on the phylloxera epidemic.

Bergevin Lane Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - 2004
2007-10-10 16:04:00
Hey, I don't need an expensive $95 bottle of wine with lots of Parker Points to feel cool about the wine I pour in my wine glass. The most important thing to me is how does the wine taste? If the $95 bottle with 95 points make 95% of my tastebuds sing, than what a joy! However, if it does not wow my palate, why do I want it? Accolades are important for wineries to have and it's exciting to be noticed for all of their hard work, but as a consumer I have to reach deep inside and ponder my motives. Do I want to pay $95 for a bottle of wine that I have relied on someone else's palate because I do not trust my own? Do I buy it to impress my friends? Phhhhttttt!Sure, in the Walla Walla Valley we have our share of mighty tasty wines with mighty prices, but if you do your shopping and take off the Parker Point blinders, you can find some excellent wines at affordable prices. Of course you will almost have to take a second look and say, "A quality Walla Walla wine for under $25? How can t...
Corcoran Vineyards Chardonnay
2007-10-03 13:41:00
We picked this bottle of wine up at Corcoran Vineyards (formerly Waterford Vineyards) in VA when we took my brother in law and sister in law wine tasting last month. The wine is a 2005 Waterford Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay (as it was bottled before the name change was necessitated by a large corporation knocking on the door) and cost us $18. It had a plastic cork and clocked in at a mere 12% alcohol, very good for a weeknight wine! The wine was fermented mostly in stainless tanks, and I believe put in neutral oak for a short period to finish it.On the nose I found lemon, slight oak, green apple, and pear. In the mouth, the wine was smooth, with none of the oak flavor. I got flavors of lemon, lime, and green apple. The wine had a very nice finish and a creamy mouthfeel. Another good white offering from a VA winery.I have to say that in my now over 4 years tasting in VA, the wines have come a very long way, and I am now routinely impressed by the various vineyards we visit. Ho...

The world in 80 vineyards against the hunger
2007-09-17 06:58:00
[img]http://www.mendozaesvino.c-om.ar/blog/files/info46.jpg[/im-g] A boy and a girl are in love. Nothing extraordinary, usually happens to enough frequency. But they live in different countries. Then, of course, they want to be together. Also they want to travel and also they want to help. In addition, they like the wine and the adventure. And then what can do? The solution was agreed to the times that run. The French Nicholas Beausset (32) and their girlfriend, Geraldine Reinhold Von Essen (30) resorted to Internet. Tipearon viaje+vinos and appeared the answer custom-made of its dreams. A French project called Vignes sans frontieres. It had a humanitarian objective. And it seemed that that was the sense that we wanted to give our trip, counts Nicholas, wine specialist. As of that moment he was all simple one. 2005 ECHELON VINEYARDS PINOT NOIR
2007-08-25 23:13:00
Friday, August 24, Little Rock, AR After another hot week in The Rock, I was surprisingly looking forward to tasting the 2005 Echelon Vineyards Pinot Noir. All of a sudden during the last two weeks a switch has gone off that has me craving reds and not uncorking the whites as much. Must be the fact that we've enjoyed whites almost exclusively all summer with a few, notable exceptions. My thirst for red was richly rewarded with this pinot noir. Upon pouring in the glass, I noted a rich, ruby-garnet color which exhibited a nose of clove, cherry and a hint of strawberry. On the palate more of the cherry and clove, a hint of oak, and a long, full finish. Nothing but good in this wine! Unbelievably this was retailed at $12.99/bottle, and that wasn't even a sale price. It is a steal at anywhere near that price point and I suggest grabbing a case or two before Echelon, and it's owner, Diaego, find out how good of a wine they've produced. Easily gave it 5 Corkscrews without a se...

Sonoma Coast Vineyards 2004 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
2007-08-11 19:18:00
The Sonoma Coast Vineyards 2004 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is composed of grapes from seven vineyards, Abbott, Baranoff, Clay, Koos, Leepin, Nunes and Zephyr Vineyards. It spent 20 months in oak barrels, 50% being new French Oak.This was my first time having a wine from this winery and it was thanks to my husband who brought it home after finding it at BevMo and thought it looked like it was worth a try. BevMo's price was $54 for this bottle and the only other place I can find it online to purchase is at the winery's website for $60.On to the actual tasting. A big, dark ruby red color greats me in the glass just before discovering dark cherry, dark raspberry, blueberry and an earthy quality with some grass/herb nuances, on the nose. I am very excited at this point can't wait to take a sip. Again the black cherry is there with some involvement of red cherry as well. Dark berries makes an impact as well with some oak notes at the end. The acidity is definitley there in the right amoun...

Kenneth Volk Vineyards 2004 Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir
2007-07-24 17:00:00
I thought we would try a, to us, new winery tonight. The 2004 Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir from Kenneth Volk Vineyards seemed like a good candidate on the shelf in the grocery store. This wine is a blend from several vineyards from Santa Maria Valley and Santa Rita Hills. It was aged in 60% new, 20% one year old, and 20% three to four year old French oak using barrels from several different coopers.A clear dark ruby color with a touch of purple reflects in the glass. On the nose, red cherry, raspberry, blueberry, light strawberry and traces of oak. Moving to the palate blackberry and cherry are the main components, with raspberry and oak in the background. This Pinot has good acidity and firm tannins, that together with the pronounced fruit makes for a great balanced wine with very decent complexity and a medium body.I got this at my local "natural food" market for $ 23.99 and I think that was a good price for this very nice wine. Finding it online for only $17.99 at Wine-Searcher.c...

Climate Change. Can the Indian vineyards lead?
2007-06-25 21:31:00
Everybody in the west is nervous about climate change. Al Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth and The Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change in the UK have recently highlighted the dangers. The wine industry is still trying to understand what this means for them. However, there are some indisputable facts.
Staring at Vineyards Helps Creativity?

…At least that’s what I am hoping, as this afternoon I am off on holiday to a gite in France for a couple of weeks, the same place we went last year with views over the hills and vineyards. My brother (25) is house sitting, so I can only hope our house is in one ...
Australian wine maker finds Kerala hot for vineyards
2007-06-11 02:36:00
Petersons, the prominent Australian wine maker has evinced interest in developing vineyards in the state, KR Vishwambaran, vice chancellor of Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) told FE. The team from Australia is convinced about the possibility of developing vineyards in the state and optimistic about the soil and climatic conditions, he said. The team has identified certain places in Idukki and Wayanad districts to be suitable for grape cultivation. The wine manufacturers in Australia are scouting suitable locations around the world to source grapes after their production in Hunter Valley, Australia was hit by drought, Vishwambaran told FE. The company has the potential, plans to invest, and has the expertise to brand and sell wines, he added. A three-member team led by Collin Peterson, managing director of Petersons held discussion with the university officials and have agreed to present a report within three weeks, he said. The team included wine consultant Roger Hoare and ano...
Frank Family Vineyards
2007-06-04 02:18:00
This weekend we went wine tasting at our local wine merchant, Capitol Cellars. Frank Family Vineyards was pouring four of their wines, and I thought I put together a little review on those, as we enjoyed the tasting.First out was the 2005 Napa Valley Chardonnay ($34). Medium straw color in the glass with citrus, ripe apple, and a hint of white floral on the nose. On the palate the apple and citrus plays an initial role before the round creamy mouth feel steps in. This is however not an overly oaky chardonnay. It has refreshing acidity that balances the creaminess out and gives it a fresh and somewhat crisp finish. Over all a very nice chardonnay. The 2005 Napa Valley Zinfandel ($34) was up next. This zin has a dark red/purple, but relatively clear/thin, color in the glass. On the nose it displays raspberry, strawberry and a spicy note from pepper. On the palate darker fruit with black raspberry and blackberry emerges with mouth watering acidity and high in firm tannins. You are left ...
English Vineyards and Climate
2007-06-01 18:28:00
I was recently presented with an argument from the Grit about the Medieval Warm Period that I’d like to address. In a comment on the previous post, Grit advocated the using the history of English vineyards as a proxy for temperature data. If we do this, we should apparently find that there was indeed ...

Benessere Vineyards 2000 Napa Valley Sangiovese
2007-06-01 02:00:00
When up in Napa Valley earlier this spring my friend picked up a bottle of this wine at the Benessere Vineyard, and tonight she shared it with me.This wine has a slightly cloudy, ruby red, appearance in the glass. On the nose I pick up smells of the ocean, dark cherry, tea and a musty earthiness. Once in the mouth muted plum, black cherries and black currant shines through. The berries come with a hint of spice, the tannins are relatively smooth on the mid palate but leaves you with an astringency at the end of the finish. This is a medium bodied wine that shows good quality both in the fruit driven aspect but also shows a lot of terroir. We both enjoyed it along with a good conversation and would have it again if this was not the last bottle.Searching online I can not find it for sale. I think the original price at the winery was about $25-30/750 ml bottle at the winery, but I can not confirm that at this point. FYI: we tasted a 375 ml bottle that's why the glass is bigger then th...
