NY Times Endorses SuperSecret Huberman Violence Plan
2009-11-05 16:08:00
The Times editorial page today comes out strongly Huberman's youth violence prevention plan (A Powerful Idea on Youth Violence), thrilling over Huberman's beat cop cred and way with a spreadsheet and calling his plan new and ambitious. If only most of the ideas in the Huberman plan hadn't already been tried, and if only Huberman wasn't keeping everything but a simplified PowerPoint version of his analysis and his plan under wraps.   I'd love for the plan to work, but unlike the Times editorial page I'd need to see it first. Huberman's quickly developing an unfortunate reputation for being super secretive.  Not just regular secretive.  Cheney secretive.  He's Chicago's SuperSecret Schools CEO....
Common speaks on Derrion Albert and teen violence
2009-10-29 20:53:00
BONUS: Common Visits National Rights Museum // 6th Annual Ludacris Foundation DinnerAbove, Common leads off with a message about Derrion Albert and teen violence and I wanted to spotlight the video because of the great point that Common conveys about why this is all happening. He says that teens have told him that they're looking for something to do in terms of after-school programs, clubs, sports, etc. I agree that the more after-school instituted programs that are available for the students will keep them busy and also give them events and activities to look forward to and stay off the streets, so to speak. It's great to see progress in more funding for schools to institute this but perhaps Common's...

Rappers Team Up to Curb Community Violence: David Banner, Rhymefest, Naledg
2009-10-20 13:00:00
For weeks, we've been mulling ways to curb the community violence that has taken the lives of so many Chicago children, including the very recent and high-profile beating death of Fenger High school student Derrion Albert.  Here at the Kyles Files, caring locals and even community activists have written in with practical ideas about how we Average Joes and Janes can help.  I've signed up for several initiatives, and hope others follow through as well.  I'll keep adding suggestions as I get more, so keep sending them. Now it's time for some star power.  Missippi rapper David Banner teamed up with Rhymefest, Naledge, Twista and Skooda Chose to release a song and video, "Something's Wrong."    David Banner The powerful...
Prescription for Violence: Safe Humane Chicago
2009-10-19 03:47:00
Mayor Daley, Senator Durbin, and so many others . . . too many for me to count off here have recently weighed in on violence in Chicago. The question: What can be done? Well, right here under our noses there's a community based program called Safe Humane Chicago.Bill Hageman wrote a great piece in the Chicago Tribune on the Safe Humane program, and founder Cynthia Bathurst. Here's a piece I wrote about Safe Humane Chicago at around its inception.Safe Humane Chicago understands the The Link (as first described by American Humane)...a link between violence to animals and then violence to people....Safe Humane Chicago works on a similar premise, if we can be kind to animals, we can be kinder to one...

Stop Cab Violence by having a Patrick Kane Beer Summit
2009-08-11 20:47:00
Chicago cab drivers deserve respect. And so does the Buffalo cab driver that was allegedly accosted and meddled with by Patrick Kane and his cuz. Mediate with a beer, but wait until Patrick turns 21, or until he has some spare change. See Rob Manker article. Patrick Kane - Chicago Blackhawks Player George Lutfallah of the Chicago Dispatcher, says that cab driving is dangerous. So he calls for a day of prayer. I agree. Having "stop the violence" rallies don't work. It takes more patience to have a peaceful way of protesting, bringing light to the issue of cab driver dangers. Patrick Kane (see video) should be praying with the cabbies and Michael Vick should be at the humane society....

One who has refused to shut up is a senior, retired policeman V. J. Ram, whose work as a detective won him a Presidential Medal. He has spoken out against the massive cover up of the police killings in Sathya Sai Baba's private quarters, when Sathya Sai Baba and his brother (the late) Janaki Ramaiah (who was on the Sathya Sai Central Trust) had charge of events soon after the slayings occurred. Those who wish to know more about V.J. Saddleback's Tom Holladay Back pedal about domestic violence
2009-07-17 02:18:00
Saddleback removes audio clip saying abuse no excuse for divorce , but it took them HOW LONG to come up with an excuse as to WHY?I guess Saddleback didn't have their damage control together fast enough when they decided they made silly and dangerous remarks about domestic violence. They decided months later to let the world know about their error at abpnews.com, but NOT leave any explanation or explain themselves at the time. Sorry, but that doesn't make any sense."I wish there were a third [reason for divorce] in Scripture, having been involved as a pastor with situations of abuse," Holladay said. "There is something in me that wishes there were a Bible verse that says, 'If they abuse you in this-and-such kind of way, then you have a right to leave them.'" He let the Baptist news outlet know his statement had to do with other forms of domestic violence, and you seem to have the right to leave ONLY if physical abuse is present now. It took how many months to come up with this...
Following Up on Chicago's Independence Eve Violence
2009-07-08 01:05:00
Yesterday's Chicagosphere post on alleged gang violence during Chicago's Independence Eve fireworks turned out to be one of today's top stories on ChicagoNow. That post compared official reports of a relatively "peaceful" July 3rd fireworks display with reports from the blog, Second City Cop, and several Twitter members indicating a sizable gang presence, multiple gang-related fights, numerous guns recovered, and a potential shooting or serious injury at or around 8:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Buckingham Fountain (follow the above link for more details.) Today on Chicagosphere, I'm here to tell you we intend to get to the bottom of things--and how you can help us do that....
Political violence: useful, legal, and justified
2009-07-06 09:27:00
Various organizations defend the human rights of the Palestinians. Curiously, political philosophers don?t know whether natural rights exist at all, let alone their range. The Declaration of Human Rights reflects an ultra-left understanding of them. European states employ many workarounds to circumvent the Declaration. Electoral barriers and districted elections violating proportional representation are just some ...

Protecting civilians from explosive violence: time for states to raise thei
2009-06-22 12:36:00
Last week the United Nations Secretary-General submitted his annual report to the Security Council on the protection of civilians in armed conflict. The language of the report represents something of a break-though of a sort that's pleasing to see from the editorial perspective of this blog. Hopefully now states will also begin to make their voices heard in supporting the Protection of Civilians report's content both in the Security Council chamber and in elsewhere. The Secretary-General's report observed that the "choice of weapons is critical in minimizing and reducing the impacts of hostilities on civilians". While this might sound obvious, it's worth noting that heavy weapons such as artillery and rockets were nevertheless used in populated areas in conflicts in recent months such as Gaza and in Sri Lanka, something the report also commented on in its paragraph 36:"As demonstrated by this year?s hostilities in Sri Lanka and Israel?s campaign in Gaza, the use in densely popul...

Attacks Against Indian Students in Melbourne, Australia
2009-06-02 00:16:00
There have been attacks against Indian students in Melbourne, Australia. Yesterday's news reported what is alleged to have been a peaceful demonstration waylaid by a small number of anti-social elements. This blog recently reported Channel NineMSN's exposure of security personnel violence against protesting staff and disabled clients at SWARA in Brisbane. Reports that suggest the Melbourne protest was derailed by over-reaction of authorities, brought back eery reminders of those accounts which a number of those involved (including those who remain Sathya Sai Baba devotees) have given.

Abuse, Violence and Lies
2009-05-23 19:24:00
So here we are again. I guess some things never change on this poor planet; like the constant onslaught and abuse of young and innocent kids by the Un-holy Catholic Church. Unless you live on Mars, you must have heard about the huge scandal in Ireland where priests and nuns were abusing and raping kids for years. It has finally been exposed and people are screaming for justice. I doubt if anything happens. Most probably, the Vatican will pay a few millions and that will be the end of it. Saudi Judge gives ignorant excuses for domestic violence. Are we much bett
2009-05-13 16:24:00
Cnn.com was quoted this week:Judge Hamad Al-Razine said that "if a person gives SR 1,200 [$320] to his wife and she spends 900 riyals [$240] to purchase an abaya [the black cover that women in Saudi Arabia must wear] from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment."The judge also ignorantly stated:Al-Razine "also pointed out that women's indecent behavior and use of offensive words against their husbands were some of the reasons for domestic violence in the country," it added. We can all see the ignorance in those comments about what domestic violence actually is. The blog world is on fire about the judges comments, and people are making comments about how backwards this thinking is. That's being NICE!As the author at It Dawned on Me statedI lived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for 14 months many years ago. Every time I see stories like this, it makes me angry. Another Pro Life Movement - Domestic Violence
2009-04-28 23:10:00
The Other Pro-Life Movement was an article I was reading on Today's Christian Woman. It was about: How to recognize and help rescue the battered women among us Authored by Corrie Cutrer. Many years ago Catherine Clark Kroeger faced a decision that would influence her life's course. Serving alongside her pastor husband, Catherine became aware of a woman in her church whose husband was physically abusing her.Incredibly, several influential church leaders discouraged Catherine from getting too involved. "To them, I was destroying the home by encouraging the woman to get away from the abuse," she remembers. Then Catherine received a call from the battered woman's counselor, who said, "You've got to get either the husband or the wife out of the home, or you're going to have a murder."So Catherine drove to the woman's house to pick her up and help her find shelter. "I decided preserving the life was more important at that time than preserving the family," Catherine says. It wasn't a...
Churches Becoming Shelters for Domestic Violence Victims
2009-04-27 13:43:00
I saw this story recently, and it was based in Hawaii, and I have to admit my jaded side came out. Churches Could Soon Become Shelters for Domestic Violence Victims? 'Don't count on it' was my first reaction. I realize that isn't the best reaction, but it was coming from my GUT and experience.KHON out of Hawaii mentioned due to huge budget cuts, etc they are looking to the church to help with this issue. They feel that it may cut close to the separation of church and state, but many other programs such as homelessness and food pantries are supplemented by churches. They hope the church will stand up and be counted, because its a HUGE need!I hope they do to, but I wouldn't place any bets on it! You may get a couple of churches that did bother to educate themselves, but that's all you will get. A VERY small number!Shelters need partnerships with churchesBefore anyone gets upset with me lets keep in mind that not all shelters are alike. Some may have volunteers that are MORE trai...

Muslim women speak out about domestic violence
2009-03-31 16:19:00
The Buffalo news has a story about some Muslim Women in the Buffalo area that are SPEAKING OUT against what had happened to Aasiya Zubair Hassan, and about martial abuse within the Muslim home as well.We hear alot about the silence in the Muslim community over this awful tragedy, but there have been those that are speaking out! They also want to give people a glimpse of what the lives of Muslim women in Western New York are like. Because those lives, they admit, often seem to outsiders to be shrouded in mystery. It’s easy for people to see the garb they wear, the women said, and make assumptions about female repression in Muslim- American culture, especially where career opportunities and marital relationships are concerned.“It bothers me that the headscarf is such a barrier,” said Ahmed, 38.The three women said they do see one great good arising from the horrific death of Aasiya Hassan: a new openness about domestic violence, both within and outside of Muslim relationships.“S...

Domestic Violence Self Defense Lashing Back - do people grasp the differenc
2009-02-17 02:24:00
Do people not grasp the difference between self-defense and lashing back in anger?I'm sure most of you have heard about the situation with Rihanna and Brown in the news. Beyond the glitz and the glamour that engulfed the lives of Rihanna and Brown, who until now had an image of a wholesome lovey-dovey couple, there is the central question of domestic violence. There are all kinds of questions as to what really happened. What seems to sicken me is this continuing attitude of, "What did she do to provoke this?"Notes of This Native Son was writing about a debate he was having regarding when it is okay to hit a women? Let me be clear about something! When we are talking self-defense when being attacked - you pull out all the stops! No man, woman or child should NOT feel they couldn?t defend themselves when in danger! I don't care who it is that is attacking you!The problem comes with some of these parties that try to give examples to show when its okay to beat the daylights out of som...
