2008-06-09 10:19:00

Virgin Media: ?Net Neutrality is a Load of Bollocks?
2008-04-14 15:07:00
Those of you who’ve been on the moon this past few months will have missed out on the debacle of a debate, “net neutrality” has become. Celebrated inventor of the Internet, Tim Berners-Lee has been very vocal of late, calling for Internet Service Providers, (ISPs), to not implement a plan of speeding up the bandwidth ...
Net Neutrality is ?A Load of Bollocks?
2008-04-14 12:08:00
According to Neil Berkett, the new CEO of Virgin Media, ?This net neutrality thing is a load of bollocks.? Mr Berkett followed this by stating that Virgin Media is already in negotiations with content providers (such as the BBC) to provide their media faster. For a fee, of course. Those companies that refuse this commercial blackmail will find the "Information Superhighway" becomes the "Information Bus Lane."Sometimes you wonder why CEOs are allowed to speak in public. The last time I saw this level of idiocy was from the then head of Ratners jewellery stores, Gerald Ratner. You may well be saying to yourself at this point, "Ratners? Who?"Back in the 1980s Ratners sold "value" jewellery from high-street stores and were very successful. In fact, they had over 2,000 stores across the UK, and were making huge profits. The business was seen as one of the UK's great success stories. That was until Gerald Ratner opened his mouth at an Institute of Directors (IoD) Conference in 1991.So suc...

Back Online
2008-02-13 20:35:00
We are back online.I arrived home today to find a note from the postman that a parcel had been returned to the sorting office. Luckily for me it's only a twenty minute walk there, so I was able to go straight back out and collect what turned out to be my replacement modem. So back home, unplug the old one, plug in the new one, and make a call to Virgin Media's tech support to enable the new modem.Pretty painless when alls said and done, and considering it was Monday evening when I placed the support call, I think they've managed to sort things out pretty quickly.
Virgin Media shifts focus from content to access.
2008-02-06 15:38:00
After losing the battle for the ITV televeison network, and experiecing drooping profits form premium content, Virgin appears to have learned from the setback. The the company is now focused on access as its primary product: Neil Berkett, who has been running Virgin Media since former CEO Steve Burch stepped down in August, described broadband as the company’s “hero product.” He said the increased speeds Virgin was planning to introduce combined with the fundamental architecture of cable would give it a competitive advantage in on-demand and next-generation entertainment in time. He acknowledged that archrival BSkyB’s move into the broadband space, with the acquisition of Easynet, had changed the playing field and admitted the channel carriage dispute with the satellite giant had been damaging. He said Virgin would no longer try to compete in the premium TV market, paying out high prices for sports and movies, but would instead focus its resources on bringing...

I'm not obsessed by Virgin Media. Honest.
2007-07-11 16:06:00
Two crucial pieces of information:  Factoid- 1: I subscribe to Virgin Media - this causes me much consternation Factoid 2: The Virgin Media service was down on Monday night in the South West London area  So, what can we deduce from these facts?   Well. Because my cable was down, I've switched the telly onto 'normal' terrestrial analogue, you know, with just channels one to five.   Things I've noticed: Observation 1: The main clock in our house was the Virgin interface one on the telly. I miss it. Observation 2: I quite like BBC3 and Judge Judy on ITV3. But I don't miss them. Observation 3: On Virgin telly, you have to press '1' then '0' then '1' if you want to watch BBC1. On 'normal' telly you just have to press '1'. Is Virgin ripping me off in some kind of unnecessary button pressing scandal?  Two pieces of information that are even more crucial than the last two: Factoid 3: It's my b...

2007-07-03 21:08:00

Virgin Media was again featured on the January 23, 2007 show when Cramer speculated that it could be a takeover target.
Jobs at risk if Carlyle Group takeover of Virgin Media goes ahead, broadcas
2007-07-03 11:58:00
Broadcasting trade union Bectu has warned of impending job losses at Virgin Media following speculation in the press that it is the target of a private equity buyout. The BBC reports that private-equity firm Carlyle Group has made an offer to purchase cable TV, mobile phone and broadband company Virgin Media for in excess of £10bn. Carlyle Group appeared before the House of Commons Treasury Committee last month as part of its investigation into whether the private equity industry ought to be more transparent and tightly regulated. Bectu said it was concerned by the growing trend for UK employers to be bought out by private equity bids which often left companies with large debts, and subsequently major job losses. Nigel Mason, Bectu national official, said: ?Clearly our members in Virgin will be disturbed by these rumours. There has been considerable debate of late about the role of private equity buyouts in the UK economy, and recent history warns us that these immensely...
Virgin Media Inc (VMED) Takeover Predicted by Jim Cramer

Virgin Media was again featured on the January 23, 2007 show when Cramer speculated that it could be a takeover target. Now, with a bid from Carlyle Group, Cramer is getting his wish with Virgin Media trading up 15% to 28 in pre-market trading, improving a very ostentatious but hardly impressive takeover targets performance record.

The talks are still early and may not lead to a bid, this person noted. As the coffers of American ...

Virgin Media and Sky ruin my Sunday night
2007-03-03 18:53:06
Disaster this week as the row between Virgin Media and Sky over sky one etc, ended up in Sky pulling all their channels from Virgin Media on Thursday. All week I’ve been looking forward to tuning in to my two favourite Jacks in Lost and 24. Nice one Virgin  I’ve been with NTL/Virgin Media for 6 years and I think I’ll be pulling the plug and moving to Sky. Perversely, I had never really bothered with Sky One before until I got into 24 last year and Lost moved to Sky One from Channel 4. On the plus side, it appears that moving to Sky will save me £50 a month, but all the same I would have liked to have had the choice. The customer is the loser as usual!
