Virginia Tech Shooting; Killer Shot Cop and Himself
2011-12-08 22:38:00
The Virginia Tech Campus has been victimized once again by a lone gun man who, unlike the tragic occurrence of 2007, is as of this writing still at large. CORRECTION as of 4:36 PM EST: the suspect was just found dead – according to Headline News, he shot himself. Two people, one a police officer, (Read More...)
Living For 32: Colin Goddard's Virginia Tech Shooting In Wake Of Gabrielle
2011-01-14 02:34:00
Living For 32, the Oscar-considered documentary of how Colin Goddard has worked as an advocate for gun control in the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting, gains higher attention after Saturday's shooting of 18 people by Jared Lee Loughner, killing six, and critically injuring U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. I interviewed Living For 32 director Kevin Breslin over Skype last month. The result is a 32 minute long, wide ranging talk about the film, Goddard, and life, including the New York snow problem. Here are the videos below, parts 1, 2, and 3. This is a quick presentation: a more detailed sketch will come soon.
From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Tucson
2011-01-10 07:06:00
The tragic events in Tucson, Arizona over the weekend has sparked another debate involving gun control, mental illness, and "how can this be allowed to happen again?" The latest information from over the weekend states that they believe that it is a lone gunman who killed 6 people and wounded 14 others during a meet-and-greet session with the local US congresswoman. The name of the suspect in custody is Jared Lee Loughner. A Cnn.com article called "Massacre suspect 'mentally disturbed,' former teacher says" gives a profile of this person: In a statement issued Saturday night, Pima Community College said Loughner was suspended after a series of run-ins with campus police between February and September, capped by the discovery of a YouTube video in which he accused the college of operating unconstitutionally. Loughner quit school after the suspension, the college said -- and it warned him that to return, he had to present a doctor's note stating that his presence would not be "a d...

Can ACC football ever be a national factor again?
2008-05-27 12:30:00
Story by Patrick Hite patrick@accnation.com In the not-too-distant past, ACC football was Florida State and the eight dwarfs. In an effort to upgrade, the ACC added Miami and Virginia Tech four years ago. The only problem with the move is that it hasn’t helped yet. In the past decade, the ACC has one win in a BCS bowl ...

The regular season is complete and the ACC Tournament begins Wednesday in Jacksonville. Column by Patrick Hite patrick@accnation.com Most of the news coming out of the ACC’s spring meetings was expected — no 18-game schedule in basketball or 9-game schedule in football– but I thought the best news this week was that, after 2008, the ACC won’t be affiliated with the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho.

2008-04-16 18:49:00
Beginning at midnight last night,  Virginia  Tech marked the shooting anniversary.  The darkness was broken by the flickering of a white candle, lit at the stroke of midnight. Soft weeping and the solemn strains of "Taps" were all that broke the silence of more than a thousand people gathered around the 32 memorial stones honoring the dead. I will never forget that day and the weeks that followed that preventable tragedy. It has been exactly one year since a mentally ill student killed 32 people and himself in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history. And while this close-knit campus has worked hard to move on, the anniversary of the killings has left many dealing with depression, post-traumatic stress syndrome and other mental health issues.A ceremony honoring the lives of those who perished during Seung-Hui Cho's rampage was planned for later in the morning in front of the memorial, where the candle lit at midnight will continue burning for 24 hours....

2008-04-16 03:09:00
The one-year anniversary of the Virginia Tech massacre by Seung Hui Cho was a very sad day for me. I was very depressed the week of the actual murders. Despite countless warnings to the University, I was shocked to learn that another Virginia Tech student committed suicide as a result of severe depression following last year's massacre:Daniel Kim  wasn't a victim of last year's massacre that left 32 students and professors dead. However he  committed suicide eight months later, after falling into a deep depression. The Korean-American, Kim feared that classmates might mistake him for shooter Seung-Hui Cho. One of Kim's friends from another state had e-mailed the Virginia Tech health center with the subject line: "Emergency About Suicidal Student." In late October, Kim revealed his darkest thoughts. He actually thought about purchasing a gun. Then, on December 9, more than a month after police checked on Kim, his sister, Jeannette, got an urgent call from ho...
