An open letter to Virginia McCaskey
2009-11-15 21:29:00
(AP photo)Dear Virginia; Son of a gun, its been a long time since we've seen each other. In fact we haven't spoken since we briefly chatted at Sid Luckman's memorial service back in 1998. I know you're not particularly fond of me. I know you think I have it in for your football team. But you also know this. When your father - my blood and guts hero - George Stanley Halas died back on Halloween night, 1983 nobody eulogized him with more passion than i did....
Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton
2009-10-16 19:54:00
Oh boy! You've got a heart-wrenching story of a guy and his old lady (in this case, a steam shovel named Mary Anne) against modern technology and a world that's quickly leaving him behind. Maybe get Clint Eastwood to direct? It'd win a Golden Globe FOR. SURE....
A Night with Virginia and Elaine Madsen and the EBERTS!
2009-10-13 03:14:00
The documentary gets a thumbs-up from Roger Ebert! Tonight was a memory making night on many levels.  I was honored to be on the host committee, thanks to Brenda Sexton of Chicago Link Productions, for a party celebrating Virginia and Elaine Madsen (her gorgeous mom) and their new movie, "I Know a Woman Like That."  There were so many cool peeps there--the top of the list being Chaz and Roger Ebert.  To paraphrase some of the eloquent words Chaz spoke on Roger's behalf describing the film, 'Its description may sound innocuous, but this documentary is transformative in the way it regards life from the perspective of age. She talks intimately with 16 women over 70 who didn't put life...
Financial Impact of Moving from New Jersey to Virginia
2009-09-11 20:33:00
Though we have been in our new home in Virginia for only 5 days, I already noticed a few money related impacts the move had on us. The move was mainly because of the relocation of my wife’s job at her employer’s request. But she didn’t get any adjustment of her salary. Hello Virginia!

How was your Labor Day long weekend? Did you enjoy the last holiday of the summer? For us, the past three days were probably the busiest and crazies days in a long time (and that’s why I didn’t post anything since Saturday). Day 3 & 4 College Tourcation: University of Virginia, Monticello, Jame
2009-08-30 16:38:00
Day 3: We packed up our family of 5 plus Papa, checked out of the Rodeway Inn and headed off in our rent-a-van to Yorktown. Despite all our constant troubles of becoming lost in Williamsburg, getting to Yorktown is quite straight forward once you find the Colonial Parkway. This is a brick road with no dividing line, few signs, and as we discovered at night not lit up, but simply enough Yorktown lies on the East end, Colonial Williamsburg in the middle and Jamestown on the West end. Yorktown was the location of the final battle in the American Revolutionary War. A National Parks Dept. ranger, who was quite knowledgeable and an untiring speaker led us through final scenes and various landmarks commemorating the battle. It is a quaint quiet colonial style town. Cannon shot damage remains in the side of some of the buildings. The town is positioned on a bluff overlooking the bay. After our tour, we wandered down to the waterfront where the beach was packed with sunbathers, and a f...

Tara Wheeler It was probably the dumbest question to ask Miss Virginia 2008, seeing that we're no longer in the year 2008: "Did you get to compete in Miss America?""...Yes.""How did you do?""I didn't win."I got a Facebook invite to see Tara Wheeler at a Crystal City restaurant, where she was raising money for St. Baldrick's Foundation for pediatric cancer research. A $10 donation got me free food and two raffle tickets. I won a fancy dish.Miss Virginia went to my high school, though I didn't know who she was. T2theZ and Ern-Diggity were in the science program with her, and they were all friends. After Tara chatted with the three of us, I informed T2theZ and Ern-Diggity that I had never met Tara. Virginia: Islamic School Revises Textbooks... Some Hate Still Remains
2009-03-13 05:19:00
An Islamic school in Northern Virginia with close ties to the Saudi government has revised its religious textbooks in an effort to end years of criticism that the school fosters hatred and intolerance. While the Islamic Saudi Academy deleted some of the most contentious passages from the texts, copies provided to the Associated Press show that enough sensitive material remains to arm critics who claim the books show intolerance toward those who do not follow strict interpretations of Islam.Astrid Riecken/The Washington Times Christine Brim is part of a group of critics who believe the textbooks at the Islamic Saudi Academy promote intolerance toward non-Muslims. The Northern Virginia school recently developed new Islamic studies textbooks in an effort to address the criticism. The academy, which teaches nearly 900 students in grades kindergarten through 12th at its Alexandria campus, developed new Islamic studies textbooks for all grades after a 2008 congressional report called portio...

Ad Wars: McAuliffe Launches First Ad In Virginia
2009-01-26 23:09:00
Remember to check out our YouTube channel, Political Realm TV, which now has over 230 subscribers and more than 1800 videos.Terry McAuliffe, a former DNC chair, has launched the first television ad of the 2009 Virginia gubernatorial contest. McAuliffe focuses on job creation in the 30-second ad, "Listened," which is airing in the Hampton Roads area, a populous region in the Southeast part of the state. "I've spent four decades building businesses and creating jobs. Now I'm running for governor, because I know we can create thousands more right here," McAuliffe explains. "I'll make it my job to protect your job and get Virginia's economy moving."With a huge cash advantage over his Democratic rivals, McAuliffe can afford to go on the air this early to establish himself and his message. Though McAuliffe's campaign told First Read they "do not intend to say anything negative" about his Democratic rivals, the ad does contain a perhaps not so subtle jab at Creigh Deeds and Brian M...

This is the highest-risk part of the exploration process."By this model, Virginia is able to maintain its balance sheet and avoid the dilution that bedevils exploration companies. It can then build a portfolio of minority interests in multiple projects which increases its odds of eventual success."Virginia now has more than a dozen active projects, with numerous joint venture partners in seve...

Great Expectations Tables For October 9
2008-10-10 02:30:00
McCain seems to have reduced Obama's a bit, and Obama's big lead in some key states seems to be declining. Last week Obama was up by about 6.5% nationally, and this week he's up by about 5.5%. McCain's attack mode paying off a bit? Overall though, there has not been much change in this chart in the past few days. Seems to be solidifying wherever they are.Colorado is back in the McCain column as Obama is now up by 3 there. Pollster.com's average has Obama up by 2.7%. But McCain can definitely still take Colorado, so Obama should not abandon the state. McCain is losing 13% of Bush voters there.New Hampshire, very close for a long time, has pulled away for McCain in a major way. He's now up by 11 points there and it looks hopeless for McCain. New Hampshire is not nearly as conservative a state as people think it is, and a lot of people from Massachusetts have been moving to the southeast part of the state recently. McCain is losing a 11% of the Bush voters in New Hampshire. That...
Signs Point to an Obama Blowout
2008-10-07 05:50:00
Note: This post contains recent polls and analysis for New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Colorado and Missouri. This election is starting to look like a serious blowout. Some pretty incredible polls have been rolling in lately.First we had three straight polls out New Hampshire giving Obama a double digit lead, the most recent one giving him a 13 point lead in New Hampshire, the previous ones at 10 and 12 point leads. This state has been tied forever. Those poll results are just incredible.Next we have three polls, all released today, from Virginia. One gives Obama a 10 point lead and another gives him a 12 point lead and Rasmussen gives Obama an 2 point lead. That almost impossible to believe, but apparently it's true. It's inconceivable that a Black Democrat could be 8 points ahead in Virginia. There are some dramatic differences between rural and urban voters in the state - the rural areas are much more Republican. However, a huge number o...

October 3 Election Analysis
2008-10-04 01:49:00
Updated October 4:Obama is really starting to pull away now. McPalin better do something and fast. They've got nothing to lose at this point, and I expect the full bore of 527's with Revered Wright, William Ayers and anything else they can dredge up. I figure things are going to get awful dirty real fast. To be honest, it's probably McCain's only hope at this point.Pennsylvania looks like it is pulling away for Obama now. Biden is a big hit here. It's a funny state. There's Democratic Philly and Pittsburgh and Pennsyltucky, Pennsylsippi and Pennsylbama in between. A bunch of rural, racist Whites, often Democrats, who love to hunt and ain't voting for no nigger.Still, recent polls are giving Obama up to a 12 point lead. The state has a 1 million Democratic registration advantage so it's really a trap for McCain. The plot was that as long as it was close enough, McCain would be forced to spend a lot of time and money in Pennsylvania, and he'd probably end up losing.McCain's ...
Obama widens Virginia poll lead over McCain
2008-10-02 17:50:00
The latest Virginia state poll of the presidential race shows Barack Obama widening his lead over John McCain. Obama leads McCain by a 53-44% count among likely Virginia voters in a CNN/Time poll, a nine-point margin outside of the margin of error.Obama's advantage is also now reflected on InTrade where he's given a 59% probability of winning the state and a 67% chance of winning the election nationally as a whole. The Virginia poll was taken after the initial U.S. House failure of the bailout package, heightening the importance of the economy where Obama holds his greatest advantage. If the election cycle remains almost solely focused on the economy, no strategy will change the eventual outcome of an Obama national win. McCain needs the election to focus on something else, anything else between now and Election Day to have any chance at all.___________________________-_______________________________-_______________________________-_______________________________-______________________...

Obama, McCain near even in latest Virginia presidential polling
2008-09-23 15:11:00
Barack Obama maintains a small and statistically insignificant 49% to 46% advantage in the latest Washington Post/ABC News presidential race poll of Virginia residents, reports the Post. The result parallels the findings of other polling firms that have pushed Obama on top but with margins below the margin of error.McCain had established a more solid lead in the Virginia polling before last week's near collapse of the U.S. financial system forcibly brought attention back to Obama's strongest (and McCain's weakest) issue. America's regained economic focus gas also helped the Democratic nominee to reestablish a more solid lead in national polls over his Republican counterpart. This week's Virginia polls take on extra importance with the advent of early voting across the commonwealth. However ridiculous it may be for balloting to start before the first Obama/McCain debate is even held, its launch could well prove the deciding factor for Virginia's key electoral votes. ___________...

Obama Voting Ground Game Produces HUGE Results In Virginia
2008-09-21 04:05:00
The photo above shows the long line of people that has formed just under the awning of this shopping center.  One thing the polls don't take into account is the massive voter registration drive and "get-out-the-vote" effort the campaign as developed.  Here's an example.  I saw this by Todd Smyth on the Obama listserv: Just another day of canvassing and churning out good numbers for Barack Obama? Uh.... Not quite. It's Saturday morning and I went to the Mt Vernon and Lee District Obama office (Rout 1, Fairfax, VA) to drop off and pick up stuff for today's canvass. We had 7 satellite staging areas in addition to the campaign office and my crappy cell phone camera doesn't do it justice but as I was leaving to head to my assigned canvass location, I snapped the picture below of dozens and dozens of people lining up along the strip mall to sign in, pick up a canvass pack and knock on doors for Barack Obama. I stored the picture, closed my camera and headed for ...
Obama giving up on Virginia?
2008-09-17 13:18:00
So, now it starts. Soren Dayton: I just got an email from Barack Obama’s campaign urging me to drive to Pennsylvania. The thing is… I live in Virginia. Virginia is supposed to be a swing state. They would rather have me knock on doors in Pennsylvania than Virginia? That sounds like they are abandoning Virginia. It does, and I’ll tell you something else it sounds like: Obama knows he’s in serious trouble in Pennsylvania. That’s a state he had a lock on until recently. No longer, and he knows it.
