West Virginia ready for DePaul this time
2011-02-13 00:10:00
The last time West Virginia played DePaul the Mountaineers escaped with a 67-65 victory at Allstate Arena. This time in Morgantown Bob Huggins' squad was ready and got out to a comfortable margin and maintained it throughout an 82-71 victory. There were some bright spots for the Blue Demons. Tony Freeland had a nice spin move that led to a dunk, but there were also problems. In the first half, as the Mountaineers built a 13-point advantage, the defense disappeared. Closeouts on three-point shooters weren't fast enough and the man defense not tight enough to get rid of the crisp cutting of West Virginia. There was also foul trouble for Krys Faber again in the first half. He came back to finish...
Living For 32: Colin Goddard's Virginia Tech Shooting In Wake Of Gabrielle
2011-01-14 02:34:00
Living For 32, the Oscar-considered documentary of how Colin Goddard has worked as an advocate for gun control in the wake of the Virginia Tech shooting, gains higher attention after Saturday's shooting of 18 people by Jared Lee Loughner, killing six, and critically injuring U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. I interviewed Living For 32 director Kevin Breslin over Skype last month. The result is a 32 minute long, wide ranging talk about the film, Goddard, and life, including the New York snow problem. Here are the videos below, parts 1, 2, and 3. This is a quick presentation: a more detailed sketch will come soon.
From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Tucson
2011-01-10 07:06:00
The tragic events in Tucson, Arizona over the weekend has sparked another debate involving gun control, mental illness, and "how can this be allowed to happen again?" The latest information from over the weekend states that they believe that it is a lone gunman who killed 6 people and wounded 14 others during a meet-and-greet session with the local US congresswoman. The name of the suspect in custody is Jared Lee Loughner. A Cnn.com article called "Massacre suspect 'mentally disturbed,' former teacher says" gives a profile of this person: In a statement issued Saturday night, Pima Community College said Loughner was suspended after a series of run-ins with campus police between February and September, capped by the discovery of a YouTube video in which he accused the college of operating unconstitutionally. Loughner quit school after the suspension, the college said -- and it warned him that to return, he had to present a doctor's note stating that his presence would not be "a d...

'Hump the Host' and 'Get the Guest' are not bored games for drinkers. At Martha and George's house, participants are forced to play. The rules of the game are ever changing. The only defense is to get liquored up. Steppenwolf Theatre presents WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINA WOOLF? Pulitzer Prize and Tony-Award winning playwright Edward Albee pours a generous round of marriages on the rocks. Martha's father is the college president. Martha's husband is a history professor. Martha's target is the new biology professor. Martha's competition is the guy's slim-hipped wife. Martha's biggest obstacle is George. In a continuous tit-for-tat, Martha and George attack each other with sniper expertise. With twenty plus years of wedded dysfunction, there are no lovers' quarrels. WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? is a spat that splats into a super-mega smack-down.

Virginia county knows what the Arizona immigration law will accomplish
2010-07-03 02:17:00
A lot and all of it good, according to Price William County officials. For three years, Prince William County near Washington D.C. has had on its books a law similar to Arizona's anti-illegal immigration law. It resulted in lower crime and fewer babies born without insurance. How about racial profiling, the thing that immigration activists assure us will happen. In Prince William County, there's not one case in three years.  Hat tip to NewsAlert....

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has apologized for issuing a proclamation establishing April as "Confederate History Month" and omitting any reference to slavery. He called it a "major omission."McDonnell- said in a statement, "The failure to include any reference to slavery was a mistake, and for that I apologize to any fellow Virginian who has been offended or disappointed. The abomination of slavery divided our nation, deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights, and led to the Civil War. Slavery was an evil, vicious and inhumane practice which degraded human beings to property, and it has left a stain on the soul of this state and nation. WEST VIRGINIA ADVANCES TO FINAL FOUR; NATIVES ADVANCE TO GOLDEN CORRAL

But on this rare evening, West Viginians will be exchanging their "George Strait's Heartland" t-shirts for 'somethin' collered'. Tonight, the University of West Virginia's men's basketball team advanced to their first final four since 1959. The win set off gun shots, truck horns, and m-80s.

I could write a response today to Brad Biggs' Trib column, outlining the number of penalties committed by the most unfocused Chicago Bears team of my lifetime.  I could write how vehemently I agree with Barry Rozner's Daily Herald column, arguing that firing Ron Turner is essentially placing a band-aid on a corpse.  But while I'll be staying focused on objective number one, the firing of Lovie Smith, I do not want this space to become redundant. This is from Mike Mulligan in the Sun-Times:Who makes the million-dollar decision if Smith has to go? Or is that the $10 million-plus decision? Who decides the fate of general manager Jerry Angelo or Phillips? The Bears can probably change coordinators and cast off...

The documentary gets a thumbs-up from Roger Ebert! Tonight was a memory making night on many levels.  I was honored to be on the host committee, thanks to Brenda Sexton of Chicago Link Productions, for a party celebrating Virginia and Elaine Madsen (her gorgeous mom) and their new movie, "I Know a Woman Like That."  There were so many cool peeps there--the top of the list being Chaz and Roger Ebert.  To paraphrase some of the eloquent words Chaz spoke on Roger's behalf describing the film, 'Its description may sound innocuous, but this documentary is transformative in the way it regards life from the perspective of age. She talks intimately with 16 women over 70 who didn't put life...

Day 3 & 4 College Tourcation: University of Virginia, Monticello, Jame
2009-08-30 16:38:00
Day 3: We packed up our family of 5 plus Papa, checked out of the Rodeway Inn and headed off in our rent-a-van to Yorktown. Despite all our constant troubles of becoming lost in Williamsburg, getting to Yorktown is quite straight forward once you find the Colonial Parkway. This is a brick road with no dividing line, few signs, and as we discovered at night not lit up, but simply enough Yorktown lies on the East end, Colonial Williamsburg in the middle and Jamestown on the West end. Yorktown was the location of the final battle in the American Revolutionary War. A National Parks Dept. ranger, who was quite knowledgeable and an untiring speaker led us through final scenes and various landmarks commemorating the battle. It is a quaint quiet colonial style town. Cannon shot damage remains in the side of some of the buildings. The town is positioned on a bluff overlooking the bay. After our tour, we wandered down to the waterfront where the beach was packed with sunbathers, and a f...
