An Easy Way to Transfer Data From A Linux Based Virtual Machine to Windows
2008-05-18 08:32:00 In my previous post, I’d mentioned about Virtualization - what it is, how useful it is to test new softwares, distros etc. Now while working in your virtual machine, you’d obviously save some data - do some wordprocessing, or compatibility testing of your programs, just to name some, all this would mean that the ...

VMware releases beta for newest Mac virtual machine
2008-05-07 13:58:00 VMware Inc. today released a public beta for Fusion 2.0, virtualization software that lets Intel-based Macs run Windows, Linux and other operating systems. Fusion 2.0 also adds support for multiple monitors and makes it easier to switch from rivals' virtual machine programs, said the company. Virtual Machine Snapshots with Hyper-V
2008-04-27 23:20:00 Snapshots are a new feature of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. Snapshots are a point in time version of a virtual machine?..what does that mean you ask? It means that you can be running a virtual machine, take a snapshot and at any point you can select a previous snapshot and revert back to that point in time. You end up with the virtual machine in the EXACT configuration that it was when you took the snapshot?and I mean exact?.memory, virtual hardware, processes, state, etc. So you can have a running virtual machine, take a snapshot, change the virtual hardware configuration, format the disk and install a different OS, it does not matter, when you apply the previous snapshot it looks exactly like it did when you took the snapshot. Snapshots do not affect the running state of the virtual machine, meaning that taking a snapshot does not change the virtual machine hardware, applications, or the currently running processes. It also means that deleting a snapshot does not change the virt...
Virtual Machine Software For Any OS

Sun developing Java Virtual Machine for iPhone
2008-03-15 03:33:00 I was under the impression that Apple said they wouldn’t allow code parser such as Sun’s JVM on the iPhone. Sun came to the conclusion it could make a JVM work on the iPhone after taking 24 hours to look at information on Apple’s SDK. Sun saw nothing in the public statements preventing the JVM from being one of the applications enabled on the iPhone, said Klein. Apple released the SDK in conjunction with the beta release if its iPhone 2.0 software; the general release of iPhone 2.0 is scheduled for June. (more…) Share This

Two Linux virtual machines sharing /home partition under VMware
2007-10-01 02:09:00 Introduction A friend of mine from StumbeUpon, to be precise The Master Chief (Visit his SU blog) asked me after reading Dual boot with two Linux sharing home asked me if I have ever hear about doing the same thing under VMware, well the answer was not, but I decided to try it and here it is what I did, hope this was what to need MasterChief. Creating the two Virtual Machines First we need to create two virtual machines each one with two hard disks, and one of it will be the same for both Virtual Machines (The one that will contain the /home directory). Step 1 - Start creating the virtual machine, I choose here custom, but may be not needed. Step 2 - Choose Linux And the appropriate type of Linux, in my case I have chosen other 2.6 Kernel Linux Step 3 - Name your Virtual machine as you may like Step 4 - Select one or two processors, Step 5 - Select if you want your VMachine to be private or not Step 6 - Choose the amount of memory for this machine Step 7 - How your network c...

Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion Virtual Machine for Series 60
2007-03-18 12:44:00 ScummVM is a collection of interpreters, capable of emulating several adventure game engines. ScummVM mainly supports games created using SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion), used in various LucasArts games such as Monkey Island and numerous Humongous Entertainment games.ScummVM also contains interpreters for several non-SCUMM games. Currently these are Beneath a Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Gobliiins, Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb, Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2, The Feeble Files and The Legend of Kyrandia. At this time ScummVM should be considered beta software, and is still under heavy development. Be aware that whilst we attempt to make sure that many games can be completed with few major bugs, crashes can happen.Release binaries Symbian S60 version 1 binary (1.4M .sis) Symbian S60 version 2 binary (1.4M .sis) Symbian S60 version 3 binary (1.8M .sis) Symbian S80 binary (1.4M .sis) Symbian S90 binary (1.4M .sis) Symbian UIQ 2 binar...
Virtual Machined Thumb Drives
2007-03-06 22:27:00 There’s an article over on Ars Technica that talks about the new beta of VMWare ACE 2. This software, which allows you to build pre-configured and locked down VMs for distribution has gone to the next level with a very nice addition. You can now load the VMs onto Thumb Drives and distribute the drives, when the drive is plugged in a version of VMWare Workstation will install and load the VM. I can see this as being the next means of mass marketing. Some companies (Microsoft for example) are already providing trial versions of their new software via the Virtual Appliance Marketplace. Now they can get company branded thumb drives, load them with their demo software and mail it to prospective customers… and VMWare stands to make money in the process… It’s win, win for everyone. Also, the VMWare Fusion Beta (VMWare for OS X) is available.

Attacks on Virtual Machines
2007-01-31 19:50:05 More reading on the security of virtual machines like VMware: a researcher at Symantec has released a great little paper Attacks on Virtual Machine Emulators (hat tip to Computer Defense for point it out). The paper covers a few of the recent VM-specific malware like the SubVirt rootkit (PDF) but mostly concentrates on methods of detecting the presence of virtual machines, including proof of concept code for detecting VMWare, MS Virtual PC, Hydra, QEMU, and even good ol’ BOCHS. An interesting paragraph: "A more serious vulnerability potentially exists in hardware-bound virtual machine emulators, if the guest can interact with third-party devices on the system. For example, if a buffer-overflow vulnerability exists in a network driver in the host environment, it might be possible for an application within the guest environment to send a specially crafted network packet that reaches the host network driver intact, and thus exploit that vulnerability." I think ...
Attacks on Virtual Machines
2007-01-24 21:49:01 An interesting paper was recently posted on the Symantec Blog. The paper was initially presented at AVAR2006. It discusses various methods of attack Virtual Machines and also detecting them… There’s source code provided for most of the methods discussed and not only is Virtual Machine detection discussed, but methods of detecting specific virtual machines (VMWare, Virtual PC, etc) are also discussed.
