What Is Mobile Virtualization Exactly Trying To Solve?
2009-09-07 08:52:00
Platform virtualization has been all about optimizing the hardware resources, after it’s inception in 1960’s it has grown into a big market. With virtualization becoming a pre-requisite for cloud computing the future is only looking brighter. But one thing which always makes me wonder, what is mobile virtualization exactly trying to solve? Let’s look at the three important problems mobile virtualization is going to solve,Viz., Convergence of Enterprise connectivity and Personalization - Enterprise connectivity and personalization on mobile phones has traditionally been completely different niche altogether, with Blackberry ruling the enterprise space followed by windows mobile. iPhone revolutionized the mobile phone personalization becoming an icon in this space and now Android sold more than a million devices is another contender. With increasing computing capabilities of smartphones, the users wanting convergence of their persona i.e., Enterprise connectivity,...

PCI DSS Compliance and Virtualization: Guidance Needed
2009-04-16 02:00:00
Earlier this week, I was meeting with a customer, discussing how some of their strategic IT projects they are undertaking in 2009 would impact their efforts around PCI DSS compliance.  This customer is a manufacturer for the consumer market and is classified as a Level 1 Merchant.  Like many organizations in today’s environment, their overarching goal in 2009 is “doing more with less.”
Security and Virtualization
2008-09-12 02:00:00
As part of my various duties here at RSA, I get the privilege of speaking with customers on a regular basis about how they can implement an Information Risk Management strategy. One of the most frequently asked questions that follow this discussion is: “how does this process change when I start to virtualize my environment?” So in this guest blog post, I thought I’d answer this question and talk a little about RSA’s collaboration with VMware for securing their virtual infrastructure solutions. Before we get to security implications, we should start with a basic discussion of what virtualization does to the overall information infrastructure...
Virtualization – Helpful in Industrial Automation?
2008-09-03 15:30:00
Virtualization has taken the IT world by storm. The virtual machine isolates and executes each operating system instance independently. If one crashes, it doesn't affect the others. Software reviewers love the idea of virtual machines. A software package can be installed on a virtual machine, and th
Virtualization and Authentication

Virtualization is one of the most hyped technologies in Information Technology today -- and rightly so. It offers the potential to improve utilization, lower cost of ownership of computers, enhance productivity, ease compliance, increase reliability and potentially improve security. Let's explore the last claim. Without a doubt, there is an impact of virtualization on security, and in particular authentication...
Government Computer Rentals Focus Shifts to Consolidation, Virtualization
2008-06-02 18:16:00
The hardware and software priorities of federal, state, provincial and municipal agencies - traditional users of leased and rented computer equipment - is shifting as the priority of these agencies' computing needs shift. The pattern of government computer rentals increasingly reflect an ongoing shift to local-area network consolidation and the 'virtualization' of employees desktops in an effort to reduce IT costs overall.Whereas, managers once procured long-term equipment rentals or leases to supply bulky desktops replete with extra space for file storage and each equipped with its own licenced software, increasingly government procurers are seeking cost reductions through linking 'virtual desktops' to leased or rented servers that are partitioned so that they can run multiple operating systems and applications for a fleet of 'virtual' desktops.Charles Christopherson Jr,. chief financial officer and CIO for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, describes in the 03/31/08 issue...

Update: Windows Optimized Desktop for the Enterprise
2008-05-22 23:02:00
I'm relaying the following article on behalf of my colleague Shanen Boettcher, General Manager of Windows Product Management for the enterprise.  We've been talking with a lot of organizations about what they need most from an optimized desktop experience, and we've been making great progress in delivering against those needs. I want to take this opportunity to share details on the Windows Optimized Desktop Scenarios and highlight some news. If you've been reading this blog regularly, you will have seen updates on the work we're doing with the Optimized Desktop. I contributed a blog on this in January for our Virtualization Strategy Day and a second blog about the announcements we had made at the Microsoft Management Summit (MMS) in Las Vegas in late April. While there are many facets to the Optimized Desktop, the framework is based on technologies that enable decoupling the traditional desktop stack of hardware, operating system, applications, data, settings and user prof...
Security Risks of Virtualization
2008-05-21 05:51:00
One fact strikes me pretty often: Companies have the problem that they have legacy software running on legacy operating systems (e.g. NT4) running on legacy hardware. This is a severe problem as you all know. Now, these companies look into virtualization so solve this problem. From all the three "legacy" up there, only the hardware problem can be addressed by the use of virtualization ? definitely not the OS and the application piece (obvious). Now, there are still a lot of people thinking that if they embed the legacy machine in a state-of-the-art virtual environment that the machine itself might be more secure. This can be true ? if you do not connect it to the network. Otherwise, the OS and the application are as vulnerable as before. This is all clear and in the meantime known to a lot of people. Virtualization gives us a lot. I think, it is a great technology to address quite some challenges (especially the challenge of having servers that are mainly "idlein" in the computer r...

I have tinkered with it a few times over the past several years but as I am getting ready to use it full time in production I need as much information as I can get. The books authors include Eli Dow, and Todd Deshane who worked on Xen and the Art of Repeated Research, as well as Quantifying the Performance Isolation Properties of Virtualization Systems. KVM-funder takes a swing at desktop virtualization
2008-05-01 07:48:00
Qumranet, a rather small software company, wants to make a very large play in the virtualization market with a new product. It's looking for Solid ICE to go up against the desktop virtulization wares from VMware, Citrix, Microsoft and a host of start-ups. Those of you in the open source kingdom will know Qumranet best as the corporate sponsor of KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), which had made its way into major Linux operating systems as the default server virtualization package. Canonical, the, er, corporate sponsor of Ubuntu, is perhaps the most vocal backer of KVM.

Looking Back At A Decade of Open Source Virtualization

Will 2008 become the “Virtual Year”? That’s what some people would have us believe now that the virtualization hype is reaching never before seen heights, and large acquisitions & mergers are starting to become quite common ( Citrix bought Xensource, Novell picked up PlateSpin, Sun acquired innotek, Quest Software snapped up Vizioncore while VMware treated itself to Thinstall, and so on). But few people realize or fail to acknowledge that the large majority of virtualization techniques and developments were started as, or remain Open Source projects. Where are we coming from ?

The Linux kernel has merged three hypervisors into its mainline tree, starting with KVM in 2.6.20, and continuing with Xen and lguest in the 2.6.23 release of the kernel. Hypervisors let users run multiple operating systems on a host system. Lguest is the simplest of the three in terms of usability and implementation, which makes it a good candidate for helping you learn how virtualization works.
