US Revokes Visas Of Palestinians
2008-08-05 05:17:00
More of this needs to be happening..The United States has revoked the visas of three Palestinian Fulbright scholars whose cases were taken up personally by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice after Israel refused to let them leave Gaza for interviews, US officials said Monday.Visas for the three, along with a fourth Palestinian student from Gaza who had hoped to come to the US under a different program, were approved after Rice intervened in June but were rescinded last week when "new information" about them was received, the officials said."There were four Palestinians who were issued visas about whom we then received additional information," State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos said. "We decided that we needed to take a closer and harder look at them in light of the additional information we received."He said the visas were canceled under a "prudential revocation" clause in immigration rules that allows them to be rescinded based on information gleaned about the holders ...
China Business Visas. Just When You Think It Can't Get Any Worse.
2008-07-29 06:40:00
"Just when you think you've lost everything, you find out you can always lo-o-o-o-ose a little more," Bob Dylan, from "Trying to Get to Heaven (Before They Close the Door)" Financial Times is out with an article entitled, "China cuts business visas before the Olympics," detailing how Chinese business visas are going to be restricted even further for the next two months: Several of the main cities hosting the Olympics have said they will stop issuing visas for general business trips until late September, after the games and the Paralympics are over. International business organisations in China warned yesterday that the new visa rules were likely to have a significant impact on business. "The introduction of such restrictions without warning creates serious problems for companies operating in China," said the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Beijing. In a statement posted on its website, the Shanghai Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Commission, which deals with visa ...
Sex And The Olympics. Sex And China Visas. A Beijing Brothel And The Magic
2008-06-08 16:56:00
Josh Gartner over at Cup of Cha blog notes how a brothel near one of his favorite restaurants in Beijing recently closed, apparently as part of a governmental effort to clean things up before the Olympics. Josh assumes the brothel will be back after the Olympics, if not before, and I am guessing he will prove right on this. In addition to cracking down on houses of ill-repute, the Chinese government has both stepped up its pursuit of visa violators and greatly tightened the requirements for securing visas. The question on visas is whether they, like the brothel near Josh's restaurant, will eventually be returning to their status quo of maybe six months ago. My prediction is that things will definitely loosen up again after the Olympics, but they will remain considerably tighter than in the past. In particular, I expect F visas (business) and L visas (tourist) will become much easier to get after the Olympics, but I expect the difficulties in getting them extended within Chi...

China Visas -- Just The Facts, Ma'am
2008-05-24 02:28:00
The Beijinger does a stellar job setting forth the current state of China visas in its post, entitled, "China Visa – Facts and Fiction." Highlights from the post's "What We know for sure" (i.e., "just the facts, ma'am") section are as follows: 1. L (tourist) visas require documents showing your "outbound and return flight booking and stamped (chopped) hotel reservation for the complete duration of stay. If staying at a relative's house, proof of kinship (marriage / birth certificate) and copies of his/her passport, visa, residence permit and police registration need to be provided." 2. F (business) visas require "flight booking, stamped (chopped) hotel reservation and original invitation letter from a relevant department of the Chinese government, company or institution, under the authorization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China." 3. L and F visas are being issued as single entry 30 day visas unless "your flight bookings (e.g. to Hong Kong) are provided to p...
China's F-Visas -- Put A Fork In Those Babies
2008-05-15 21:53:00
The Wall Street Journals' China Blog just did a post on China's current visa situation, entitled, "Visa Saga." The gist of it is that securing F-visas and tourist visas has gotten much more difficult and that multiple entry visas are becoming nearly extinct and the "prospects of the government easing the rules are slim." The post chronicles the story of "Randy, a Shenzhen-based American expatriate who says he has been living in China for the past six years and is now being “forced out:” Randy says he brought a properly signed and chopped invitation letter, only to be given another list of eight documents he would need to supply. Even if he had all eight documents, he reports being told, the visa notification letter would be issued only “in cases of extreme circumstances,” and that he should hope for no more than a double-entry, 60-day visa. The visa officer said “no more multi-entry business visas are being issued,” Randy says. The kicker: Randy says the visa offi...

China Visa Certainty: Z (employee) Visas Are Z Best
2008-04-27 08:31:00
Got a worried call the other day from a China based foreign businessperson complaining about being forced to return to his home country because his China tourist visa was about to run out. Not only was he mad about being unable to renew his visa from within China or even by jumping over to Hong Kong, but he knew his chances of getting a new multiple entry visa were extremely low. Our conversation from this point went something like this: Him: I have a $5 million a year business to run in _______(Chinese city). Me: I understand your concern. Him: Doesn't China care about business any more? How can they expect me to run my business from ________(foreign city). There is no way that is going to work. Me: Are you familiar with Z visas? Him: Yes. Me: Have you tried to secure a Z visa? Him: No. Me: Why not? Him: I have only been in China for three years. When I first came in, things were different. We started out with only three Chinese employees. Back then, the...

China Is Making Visas Interesting.
2008-04-16 19:03:00
Visas have always bored me. Sorry about that, but they have. A law school education is rarely needed to figure out visa issues and I did not go to law school for that. I have always taken a rather perverse pride in not keeping up on visa requirements. Anywhere: Client: Will I need a visa to come to the United States and, if so, what kind? Me: I dunno. Let me pass you off to the high school freshman who does our filing and we can have her figure this out and get back to you in 15 minutes. Not that I have been immune to visa problems. Not that long ago, I was enroute to Qingdao via Seoul (and when I say enroute, I mean in the air half-way between the two places) when I put on my glasses and noticed for the first time that though the date on my visa was still plenty good, I had already maxed out on the number of visits. My sweet talking the Chinese customs guy did no good and I had to return to Seoul and spend the weekend chillin' at the Westin Chosun until the Chinese Emb...

Gates Wants More H-1B Visas
2008-03-12 15:54:00
Speaking before the U.S. House Committee on Science and Technology on Wednesday, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates outlined suggestions to build U.S. strength in an increasingly competitive international high-technology market.Gates suggestions include improving science and math education for U.S. students. Unless more students can be attracted to science and math, Gates warns, the U.S.’s competitive advantage will erode and its ability to create high-paying jobs will suffer.Gates also called on Congress to reform immigration policies to allow more “highly skilled professionals” from abroad to work in the U.S. by raising the cap on H-1B visas, to help retain foreign-born employees with a path to permanent residency. He doesn’t see this effort as at odds with the idea of spurring more American citizens into science and math-related professions; he said that American companies simply won’t have the talent they need.“The shortage of scientists and engineers is so acute that we ...

I've been having trouble of late. Nothing serious, maybe just a case of the winter blues, maybe a case of homesickness, and maybe it's some kind of mid (quarter) life crisis, though I thought I was done with those... I think it really comes down to me sorting out what I'm doing.I have dreamed of living in England for as long as I can remember. I don't know why, I can't explain it, even to myself, so I won't try to explain it to you. But here I am, realizing a dream that has been simmering inside of me for half my life, and it just isn't satisfying that itch.I came here, at this point in time, because the opportunity arose. I had some money, nothing going on back home and no idea what to do with myself... so I figured why the hell not? But now I'm starting to ask why?I thought that I would have some great opportunities here to hone my craft and possibly (hopefully) get a job in journalism. To get some experience that I could take home (or wherever) with me when it was time. B...

Successful partner visas overcome the 12 month rule
2008-02-25 04:55:00
Partner visa applications take up about 25% of Australia's migration intake. There are two types. Firstly, Spouse Visas (for married or de-facto heterosexual couples). Secondly, Interdependency Visas (mainly for gay or lesbian couples). To apply for a Spouse Visa for a married couple, the marriage has to be recognized under Australian law. It does not have to be conducted in Australia. The rules for de-facto couples and gay or lesbian couples are very similar. Generally both require the couple to have lived together for 12 months. The 12 month rule and the exceptions to it are discussed in this article.
China Visas From Japan, 2008
2008-02-16 01:42:00
For a business trip last March, I needed a visa to get into China. For Americans the fee was 6,000 yen (about $60). For a British colleague, it was 4,000 yen. Different fees paid, we were on our way to Beijing.Well, business and China beckon once again. At the consulate in Osaka the other day, other than a broken copy machine--we all had to run across the street to a Chinese travel agency to have our passport and Japanese identity cards copied--things went smoothly. The woman at the Visa window was even the same young woman as the previous year. After several minutes spent stapling, clipping, and writing up a pink receipt, she told me in heavily accented Japanese, "You can pick up your visa between the dates written here. The fee is 15,000 yen."After a nano-second, I said "Huh?! 11 months ago it was 6,000. Are you sure about that?"She didn't require a nano-second: "Yes. The fees have been changed."And now we are bound for Shanghai.Hotels in BeijingBuy 2008 Beijing Olympics TicketsBo...

Australian tourist visas in high demand in Indonesia
2007-12-04 12:51:00
Indonesians planning to travel to Australia for holidays over the next few months should lodge their visa applications as soon as possible due to peaking demand, the Australian Embassy said here on Tuesday. Australia processed nearly 60,000 visitor visas for Indonesians planning a holiday or short stay in the country last year, a 12 percent increase on the previous year. "Going by previous experience, November and December are particularly busy - our tourist applications often double at this time," First Secretary at the Australian Embassy, Leanne Blackley, was quoted by the national Antara news agency as saying. "We anticipate Australia will again be a popular holiday destination for Indonesians over the Christmas and New Year period. We are therefore encouraging people to plan ahead and lodge their visa applications as soon as possible," Blackley added. "If Indonesian visitors lodged visa applications now, we can process most in five working days or ...

2007-10-25 01:55:00
On Tuesday, the US Senate approved by unanimous voice vote to include Amendment 3449 to the budget appropriations bill of the Departments of Labor, Health & Human Services, and Education. Amendment 3449, introduced by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, seeks to give 61,000 visas for nurses, physical therapists and their immediate families. Nurses and PTs are part of the Schedule A classification, which states that these occupations are shortage jobs in the US.The approval of the amendment in the Senate is a major victory. The Senate was recently the battleground for the controversial immigration reform bill which was voted down. The appropriations bill will now face a Senate-House conference for the final phase of the legislative process in Congress. If the bill gets through, it will be submitted to President Bush for final review and approval. At both levels, the bill faces very tough challenges. If the bill makes it past the joint conference, the President could still veto the bill an...

Bill amendments may recapture Sched A visas for nurses
2007-10-22 19:10:00
Over the past week, two amendments were offered in the US Senate that would recapture unused visas for Schedule A applicants, particularly foreign nurses, and their families. Hammond Law Group, in its Web site, said these amendments could be tackled as early as this week. The first amendment seeks to recapture 61,000 unused visa. This amendment is being attached to the Labor Health and Human Services appropriations bill co-sponsored by Sen. Schumer and Sen. Romney: More visas for seasonal workers
2007-10-14 01:17:00
People and the candidates from the states far away from the southern border just do not get it how strongly many feel about the illegal immigration problem. Romney says that if businesses need more ‘migrant workers’, which is code for ‘cheap labor’ then we need to issue more H2B visas. How about if businesses paid a reasonable wage for Americans to fill those jobs? I do not buy that horseshit line about ‘jobs Americans won’t do’ for a second. Or maybe they just forget to quote the second half of the saying: ‘jobs Americans won’t do unless paid a reasonable wage’. American business needs to kick the habit of cheap illegal labor. "The answer to that is simple, which is issue more visas," Romney told reporters. "If our employment sector needs additional immigrant laborers, then issue the visas necessary to provide that work force."Mitt Romney is basically saying just give business more crack and everything will be fine. If what he said becomes widely kno...
