Review: The Body Shop Vitamin C Peel
2009-05-04 09:02:00 I love trying out things like peel's, masks and micro dermabrasion kits. I am such a sucker for promises of bright beautiful skin etc!I bought the vitamin e peel from the body shop a while ago and i have used it a few times. Its a gel that you put on your face and then you wait about 10 min and when its dry you peel it off. Its supposed to leave your skin radiant. Here's what i think. What i like about it:It comes with a little spatula that makes application quite easyYour face feels clean and soft after you have used itIt doesnt burn or irritate my skinThe tub looks small but you dont use a lot at a time because its a gel and it goes a long way. What i dont like:The smell is awful. It smells like tequila to me.It didnt give me what it promised (a radiant skin) but maybe after i have used the whole jar my opinion will change.I do like this product but i will have to try a few different brands and see their results before i re purchase.Rating - 4/5What do you use as a skin peeling p...

Vitamin D Combats Cancer
2009-04-23 16:46:00 Two new vitamin D studies add to a growing body of science supporting the potential anti-cancer benefits of the vitamin. The first study, published in the June 15 issue of the International Journal of Cancer, suggests that the benefits of vitamin D for treating prostate cancer may be due to the action of the vitamin on a specific gene. Researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center report that the active form of vitamin D in the body, 1,25-hydroxylvitamin D3?1,25(OH)2D?may link with a gene known as G6PD, which releases an antioxidant enzyme and protects DNA from damage. Essentially, these findings conclude that vitamin D may not only treat prostate cancer, it may also prevent it.The second study, published in the May issue of the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, suggests that maintaining high levels of vitamin D may protect against cancer in general. The research, based on data collected from 3299 patients participating in the Ludwigshafen Risk a...

Vitamin B12 And Recurrent Mouth Ulcers
2009-02-21 08:31:00 Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and for the formation of blood. It is one of the eight B vitamins. Vitamin B12 is found in foods that come from animals, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. Vitamin B12 is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting DNA synthesis and regulation, but also is an effective way of preventing mouth ulcers. In this post, Ani from bodykind will show you Vitamin B12 is found to be an effective way of preventing recurrent mouth ulcers. You may visit bodykind and read more posts on health especially natural health and wellbeing. In August last year I wrote about natural ways to prevent and treat mouth ulcers, medically known as Aphthous Stomatitis. A recently published medical study has found that nightly doses of a vitamin B12 supplement are useful for individuals who suffer from recurrent mouth ulc...

Vitamin C Injections Shown to Inhibit Cancer in Mice
2008-08-05 17:24:00 Thirty years ago, a novel idea for cancer treatment was presented: vitamin C. But, it turned out, it was impossible to consume enough vitamin C to raise ascorbate concentrations to pharmacologically-active levels. Now a new study funded by the U.S. Government shows that injecting high concentrations of vitamin C stops the spread of cancer and slows growth of tumors by 50 percent—in mice, at least. The results were positive over a wide variety of cancers, but more research will be needed before human trials can begin.
Vitamin A Needed for Healthy Sex Organs
2008-07-17 11:30:00 Did you know that vitamin A is actually responsible for our sexuality? Without proper amounts of vitamin A, the gonads can't manufacture our sex hormones. These hormones regulate our sexual desires and abilities. For males proper amounts of vitamin A can mean healthy sperm and virility. For females it means responsiveness, and the ability to conceive, and to carry the fetus to full term in the womb.Vitamin A is an essential human nutrient which is commonly attributed to better vision, healthy skin and bone growth (besides calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium). But besides these, it is also involved in many of our body’s processes such as cell growth and development, immune function, reproduction, embryonic development, reduction of heart diseases and cancer, and its antioxidant activity. In fact, it doesn’t only reduce the possibility of cancer but some sources are also citing its ability to cure both cancer and leukemia even better than chemotherapy.Vitamin A is required for our...

Vitamin C or L-ascorbate is an essential nutrient for us humans including our cousin primates, other mammalian species (notably guinea pigs and bats), a few species of birds, and some fish. The presence of ascorbate is required for a range of essential metabolic reactions in all animals and plants. It is made internally by almost all organisms. Unfortunately, humans have no such ability and had to rely to taking it from dietary sources. It is widely known as the vitamin whose deficiency causes scurvy in humans.Primarily, vitamin C participates in the synthesis of hormones that are involved in sex and fertility; such as androgen, estrogen and progesterone. The Importance of the 12 B vitamin
2008-06-02 03:56:00 The 12 b vitamin is one of the b vitamins that are essential to maintain a healthy body. Otherwise known as Cobalamin, the 12b vitamin is needed for the processes to convert the carbohydrates, fats and proteins from food into energy. 12 b also, more importantly, helps keep the red blood cells healthy and therefore prevent heart disease as well as keeping the immune system functioning at its maximum level. In addition, 12 b is used to create the protective covering of all nerve cells in the body. The most important function of 12 b is to form healthy red blood cells. However, all cells need 12 b to keep them healthy. It is the white blood cells, amongst others, that need 12 b to help ensure that the immune system functioning properly. All of the nerve cells in the body also need 12 b to form their protective fatty layer. This is essential for all of the nerves but is especially so for those in the brain. If there is not sufficient 12 b to create this protective layer then the brain w...
New Coke Vitamin Water (Bottle of snake oil not included)
2008-05-30 14:00:00 Tales of Coke's ability to dissolve a set of choppers in a glass overnight or to put a sheen on a rust-stained kitchen sink might be urban legends (we ended up eating the T-bone we had soaking in a vat of the stuff, so we can't comment conclusively on that one, but don't recommend this method of preparation to diabetics), there is no doubt that the soft drink has ruined many alcoholic beverages. As far as we're concerned, Coke is the sine qua non wimp-additive for those who can't handle their liquor, and responsible for ruining otherwise perfectly good rum. You can distinguish the coke-base drunk from your typical drunk by the rotten teeth that accompany his pickled liver in his golden years. The "Cuba Libre", (or Rum & Coke) as it's known in countries, such as Canada, where freedom of mobility rights extend to actually visiting there whenever you choose, is the world's most popular highball though the "Coke" part is usually abandoned for straight rum by the time the tast...

VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES 2
2008-05-19 23:42:00 Vitamin B6 deficiency is seen occasionally in individuals who eat very few plant foods. Seizures occur in babies fed formulas deficient in B6. This has especially been a problem when a relatively high kidney excretion develops during pregnancy, while a mother was given high dose supplements. A number of drugs interfere with vitamin B6 utilization, such as isoniazid, used in the treatment of tuberculosis. Eating a natural varied diet, it is not difficult to get plenty of pyridoxine. It is the vegetable source of vitamin B6. Scurvy is another vitamin deficiency with worldwide prevalence as well as a colorful history. This condition is caused by a deficiency of ascorbic acid, also called vitamin C. It was a common cause of mortality in sailors during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. James Lind, a British naval surgeon, developed a simple cure in 1747 by giving the sailors two oranges and one lemon every day. Their swollen gums, weakness, and bleeding tendencies responded dramatic...
VITAMIN DEFICIENCIES 1
2008-05-18 23:15:00 Although definite diseases can be associated with the excess intake of certain vitamins, these are seldom seen on a large scale. Much more common are the deficiencies described below. Pellagra is a disease caused by the deficiency of niacin, one of the B vitamins. The name is derived from the rough skin characteristically seen crusting around the hands and neck. Painful burning of the mouth, shaking of the body, and less commonly, mental disturbances can result. Pellagra was common in the United States in the early 1900?s. A healthful diet was discovered to be curative. One of the essential amino acids, tryptophan, is converted into nicotinic acid, a counterpart of niacin. Deficiency of other nutrients sometimes complicates the disease. Individuals subsisting on a diet primarily of corn are predisposed to pellagra, since corn protein is low in tryptophan and most of the milling removes the vitamin.Classically pellagra is characterized by the ?three D?s? ? diarrhea, dermatitis, and d...

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Breast Cancer Risk
2008-05-16 20:25:00 From the L.A. Times and Mount Sinai Hospital comes a report that breast cancer patients who had below-normal levels of vitamin D when diagnosed were a staggering 94% more likely to have their cancer metastasize, and 73% more likely to die within 10 years of diagnosis. These results are preliminary and it is far too early for doctors to begin advising women to take vitamin D to help combat cancer. That said, striving for 100% of the daily recommended amount would be wise anyway. Vitamin D has a number of beneficial effects on the body, although taking too much can also cause problems. The best form of vitamin D, D3, is produced naturally in the body due to exposure to sunlight, and is considered the most useful form. So spending more time in the sunlight may have beneficial effects for helping fight breast cancer or preventing its spread. But be careful not to get skin cancer from over-exposure!
