WordWeb: #1 Tool for Vocabulary Nerds
2008-06-06 23:57:00
While searching the collection of freeware that a variety of blogs have collected over the past month, a program jumped out and tackled me. In this case, I enjoyed the pain that resulted from the aftermath of the spontaneous tackle. This program, known as WordWeb, is a dictionary/thesaurus which activates upon holding in the control key and right-clicking on a word in any program. Yes, any program. You no longer have to have internet access to look up a word, or copy and paste a word into some internet dictionary because you're curious on what it means. And if you have internet access? WordWeb uses both their dictionary collection as well as 'tabs' to other online dictionaries ? in case WordWeb's definition wasn't good enough. Also, there is a tab to Wikipedia. I find this program to be very helpful for my goal of learning a plethora of vocabulary terms throughout the course of this coming summer. Not only do I hope to achieve a better SAT score in the fall from my personal stu...

And what a wonderful new world is open to us now that she can read!----------------------------------------------------The neighbor girls were over last weekend, during which time they all played upstairs in Sweetie's room. That evening, I remembered this and imagined the mess that most certainly still existed upstairs. I sent Sweetie to her room to pick up the toys.At one point, Hubby went upstairs to check on her progress. I couldn't make out his exact words, but I definitely heard his shocked surprise regarding Sweetie's disastrous surroundings. I also heard some back and forth between them, wherein I assume Sweetie was blaming the mess on the girls and Hubby was e...

Japanese onomatopoeia
2008-03-13 13:20:00
???Japanese is rich in onomatopoeia ? words that try to directly capture the sound or feel of something. English has no shortage of it either: vroom, clip-clop, titter, bang, etc. But whereas many of them are considered somewhat inappropriate in ?serious? English (e.g. eentsy weentsy, hoity toity, woof woof, etc.), in other words, peripheral, they are at the very heart of the Japanese language. One of the first you will hear when you start learning Japanese is part of the compliment ?Pera-pera desu ne!,? or ?You?re fluent, aren?t you!?. While pera pera can have a slightly negative meaning too, it is usually reserved for bera bera, which always means something like ?glib voluability? or ?easy prattle?.The real appeal of Japanese onomatopoeia is how they make such a direct non-grammatical appeal to be understood. Many of them, once heard, can never be forgotten. For example, metcha kutcha (the ?ku? pronounced ?coo?), meaning ?a complete mess,??totally mixed up,? ?in utter disorder,? et...

The vocabulary of scent
2008-03-04 22:56:00
This is fun to read?and a rare pleasure, too, since the importance of perfume advertising means that one doesn?t often get to read strong criticism of multimillion-dollar-earning fragrances. The joy of Turin and Sanchez?s book, however, is their ability to write about smell in a way that manages to combine the science of the subject with the vocabulary of scent in witty, vivid descriptions of what these smells are like. Their work is, quite simply, ravishingly entertaining, and it passes the high test that their praise is even more compelling than their criticism. ? John Lanchester reviews the upcoming book by Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, Perfumes: The Guide. Read more in Scents and Sensibility in The New Yorker.
