Volterra 1398
2007-05-19 16:03:00 Volterra Interior of Duomo at Volterra The history of Volterra in Tuscany goes back to Neolithic times. It was an important Etruscan settlement and the Etruscan ruins can still be seen today. In Roman times, it was an important town and again the Roman ruins including a Roman theatre are still very much evident. Its important extended far into medieval times, the Renaissance and beyond. But for two days in August: the 20th and 27th August, the town recreates a day in the life of the town in 1398. From morning to night , a Medieval city in the year 1398 is recreated throughout the historical centre with markets, open workshops, musicians, jugglers, commoners and nobles. The currency used is not the Euro but the "Grosso" (short for the "denaro grosso")Presumably the liturgies in the churches will also be authentic.References:Virtual Guide to Volterrahttp://www.comune.volte-rra.pi.it/english/Cathedralhttp-://www.comune.volterra.pi.it/en-glish/cittait/duomo.htmlOfficia-l site of Volterra 1398h...
The Abbey of San Giusto, Volterra
2007-05-19 15:47:00 The Camaldolite abbey and church were built in 1030 in the vicinity of the small church of San Giusto al Botro which conserved the relics of Saints Giusto and Clemente. However in the sixteenth century, there was a major landslip. The abbey was partially destroyed. Its treasures and monks were moved to a building which was safer. The abbey hosted the works of Giotto, Ghirlandaio, Botticelli, De Witte, Franceschini, Mascagni and a rich collection of manuscripts and incunabula.A Romanesque apse and the Medieval bell tower are all that remain of the church reduced to a ruin in 1895.The ruin is in a parlous state. It sits precariously on the edge of the balze (cliffs). The site can be visited: but only at your own risk. |
