2009-06-22 23:43:00 4-koma comics, the Japanese analogy to the western comic strip, tend to follow a pattern. Like comic strips, they focus on talking heads, doing rather formulaic things. Think of any mainstream comic strip or even popular webcomics, and you can see the pattern pretty quickly. The most common formula is two to four people, conversations about topical or typical situations, with a punchline that relies on irony, wordplay or a twist of meaning. 4-koma are similar, although they rely a little bit more on the vaudevillian formulas of Manzai comedy. This makes them a little repetitive over time. Crazy cosplay-obsessed teacher will always be crazy and cosplay-obsessed. Wacky offbeat girl who is always hungry will be wackily offbeat - and hungry. 2009-06-18 22:18:00 There I was, surveying my domain, which is to say I was staring at my pile of things to review, and I saw the Season 3 boxset of Maria Watches Over Us. It came into my mind to review "Ciao, Sorella"...and, I smiled. Because this particular OAV makes me smile. Every time. Smiled when I watched it raw, right after it was on Japanese TV, and again when I bought the Japanese collector's edition (complete with marble-pattered photo album) and again when I saw it subbed and yes, again when I watched it - twice - from my shiny happy boxset from Right Stuf/Nozomi.This is the last of the third season, the last OAV for the series to date. To write the novel, this was the first time Konno Oyuki had ever gone a overseas trip for reference - and it shows. This book reads like a tour of Italy in the company of Yumi, Yoshino and Shimako. When I picked it up today to review it, I couldn't remember a single story in it, although I had only re(!)read it a week ago. After I picked it up and flipped through the volume I remembered a few of the stories, but having set it down again more than ten minutes ago, they are already slipping from my mind. This is not a good thing. But that aside, it's a fine addition the the Wildrose series.Mistukuni Hachime, of Gokujou Drops fame, brings it on with "Netemo Sametemo," which seems just about the most straight-on schoolgirl item in the book. 2008-07-08 00:49:00 Yuri fans hit paydirt with Volume 3 of Kaleido Star, in which Layla suddenly comes to the conclusion that Sora is her important partner. (Finally!) And we get to spend moments here and there noticing that Anna is acutally quite hunky and cool and that Mia is besotted, although more of that will come later. lolWe start the volume with a little time wallowing in Anna's backstory, then we spend not nearly enough time as Layla and Sora bond over their "Amazingly Hot New Production" (the amusing title of the episode) - in which they star as pirates fighting in a storm, while the ship/swing bursts into flame below them. 2007-12-28 20:23:00 In this book, Dr. Done and his colleagues at the Royal Veterinary College in London have produced beautiful picture atlas of canine gross anatomy. The book is primarily made up of hundreds of excellent-quality highly detailed photographs depicting dissection of a canine cadaver. Each photograph is accompanied by a brief description of the view and a labeled line drawing identifying structures visible in the photograph. The bulk of the atlas treats canine anatomy by a regional approach, starting with the head and progressing to the pelvis. The first chapter contains a very useful depiction of surface anatomy and its relationship to the boney skeleton (juxtaposition of photographs of a live dog with a skeleton is an outstanding way to teach palpable landmarks); radiographic anatomy accompanies these sections. The last chapter addresses feline anatomy in an abbreviated format similar to the canine anatomy.BUY NOW |
