Metta Charity Walk cum Family Carnival 2008
2008-06-09 13:13:00
8 June 2008At 8am, my Aunt, Mother and I reported to the Volunteers registration booth at Metta School [32 Simei Street 1]. The Volunteer Executive, Eilynn, handed us our Tshirt and directed us to our booth. The Metta Charity Walk cum Family Carnival is an annual event organised to raise funds for the Metta Welfare Association. The Carnival sees booths set up by various business owners and volunteers who donates all proceeds generated to charity. I had attended and volunteered for the previous year. This year, I brought along my family and had fun doing our part for charity.Since we were early, we browsed the Happy Arts Deli cafe for breakfast. The cafe features vegetarian delicacies. When the boxes arrived for our booth, we began unpacking the Lavender products from the Gift Cottage. I watched along as Mother and Aunt discussed over what was the best layout for the booth. A great opportunity for the two adults to immerse themselves with hands-on training for entrepreneurship. The Gue...

Volunteering at the VA
2007-12-18 02:43:00
It was day two today. It was great as always! All of the veterans are extremely appreciative of what we do. I really connected to the one that I met last time that was really sick. It turns out that she was an Army bandsmen and even a director. She was amazing! I think she's one of my favorites. The next time we are handing out Christmas gifts to those awesome vets. It is going to be wonderful fun! I would do this every day if I could. I am not permited to write about a lot of the situations I experience due to protecting the sick veterans, but I'll try to tell you guys as much as possible.
Fancy Volunteering?
2007-12-12 02:30:00
Traveling it seems is turning a corner. While they will never be expunged entirely, the world of hyper luxurious, all-inclusive resorts is being confronted more and more by a different, more organic form of travel. Enter ‘volun-tourism.’ For the same price as a ritzy, expensive resort, families and the stray traveler can visit the ...
Acts of Kindness
2007-11-30 09:01:00
Leo Babauto, author of Zen Habits wrote a post about acts of kindness (with the goal of bringing people closer together). This is a concept I truly believe in. What prompted him to write was that when he went to the DMV (in Guam where he lives), a woman who works there was particularly helpful and he was so grateful. And yet, when he was talking with his sister Katrina, she said she felt that most people aren't as kind as they used to be. She's noticed that people say "thank you" less often, and don't smile at strangers. They spend less time walking and talking with each other and more time in their cars where they often act rudely. They watch more TV and spend more time on their computers and less time outdoors interacting with others.Leo mentioned that when he thinks of ways for people to establish community and help each other, the image that comes to mind is Amish barn raisings. He is hoping that by offering to do kind things for others (he gave away 50 eBooks to the first 50...

Community Project: Debutante Ball
2007-11-07 23:28:00
On Oct 3rd, the Victorian Office of the Child Safety Commissioner, in partnership with youth outreach agencies, organised the inaugural Debutante Ball for young people in Out of Home Care. That is children who can not live with their own families. The young people involved were either wards of the State or in foster care arrangements and have often missed out on many of the 'rites of passage' events that many of us take for granted. The Body Shop's People Team were fortunate to be invited to help the girls in their preparation on the night, doing their makeup, fixing hair, calming nerves and generally getting them ready for this event, for which they had been preparing all year. They were presented to Victorian Premier John Brumby and his wife Rosemary.By all accounts the night went off beautifully and it was a pleasure for our team to help out.Louisa Wallace - People & Values Manager
Who said Hula-Hooping wasn't fun?
2007-11-05 06:39:00
Probably no-one, but I can honestly say that I have witnessed the fun to be had (and skill required) whilst hula hooping, first hand. And this was my favourite part of volunteering at Children on the Edge in Aceh, Indonesia. Watching the beautiful girls running around the centre, wearing their compulsory Muslim Jilbab, hula-hooping. They would hula-hoop the afternoon away, whilst casually walking around, chatting to each other and even racing each other, all whilst hula hooping. They looked so natural and barely even moved; the hoop just effortlessly whirled around their waists. These girls were about 8 or 9 years old with tiny frames, and these hula hoops were heavy. Its no wonder they are so good, the threat of a dropping the heavy hoops on your toes is reason enough to improve your skills. These kids, put simply, are amazing. Surviving the 2004 tsunami means they have lived through seeing some horrible things and probably lost family and friends. Yet, seeing these kids in actio...

My Chosen Causes
2007-10-29 18:09:00
It has been nearly three months in Ghana and I believe I have finally found a way to meaningfully contribute to this country.  At first it was tough to look for projects that resembled fishing rods as opposed to fish.  My feeling is that charities are actually counterproductive to the development of these societies.  Instead ...
Volunteering at the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival
2007-10-24 02:28:00
As you may recall, I did some volunteer photography at the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival earlier in the summer. Well, the larger task at hand on my second day of volunteering was taking the team photos. Although it would appear to be a big responsibility, it was actually pretty easy since I took the photos with local up and coming amateur photographer, Felix Chen. This is how it worked...as the teams were ushered down to the docks, prior to lining up we would have them setup for a team photo. Some teams were more enthusiastic than others (in other words they had personalities and a sense of humor! hehe), but I can understand that dragon boat racing is taken very seriously by some, so a select few had their "game face" mentality. The neat thing about dragon boat is that it appeals to everyone. Young people, old people, new born, pets, etc...anyone can paddle. Not only that, teams can be formed by corporations, community clubs, small businesses, friends, restaurants, etc... you name it ...

Volunteering At The Cancer Institute
2007-09-19 17:46:00
My current rotation in Family Medicine has proved to be a bit more benign (in UP Manila speak, not that taxing), so I impulsively went to “volunteer” for night duty at Philippine General Hospital’s Cancer Institute. From 8 PM to 1 AM, I helped out in monitoring patients’ vital signs and carrying out orders (blood ...

Volunteering in Ghana
2007-04-09 16:20:00
Somewhere in a box, in storage, there is a picture I drew back in fourth (4th) grade. The photo is of what we wanted to be when we grew up with a short explanation on the bottom. My picture, drawn when I was just about 9 or 10 years old is of me and a 'husband' and three children standing on a beach with a hut in the background. I wrote under the picture that I wanted to be a Missionary when I grew up.Obviously my dream of being a Missionary didn't come true as life had other plans for me. But many times over the past fifteen years I've kept my eye open for opportunities to volunteer overseas in programs such as this opportunity to volunteer in Ghana. For a fee that starts around $775 and includes meals, accommodations, airport transport, orientation, volunteer program and 24/7 support, you can volunteer anywhere from a week to six months. It's not the right time for me to volunteer at this point in my life, and perhaps not even that country, but I keep my eyes open a...

When Volunteering Helps Your Job Search
2007-03-21 23:14:00
As a volunteer, individuals offer their services without receiving a salary or wage in return. It is an act that is performed of his or her choosing and desire. Sometimes, volunteering is a decision that is made because one wishes to give back to their community or wants to feel the warmth of helping others, while others undertake volunteering for a different reason - furthering their job search efforts. In order to obtain a paying job, many turn to the allure of volunteering, which can open many doors from a wide range of opportunities that may emerge during their stay with a company, business, or association. Although you are not getting paid for your time, energy, and effort, volunteer activity is real work, which often results in some sort of final performance, accomplished task, or level of exerted force. It is through various achievements that volunteers complete real work tasks that others may get paid to do. Often, volunteers assist those on the payroll in accomplishing the...

Plan on partying it up tonight, who cares about school tomorrow, right?Pssh oh yeah right. I gots yooh! =P And that just sounds oh so believable of a good girl like me. Haha, just kidding. I am home though, but in no way am I skipping school unless everyone lied to me and we really only had a delay rather than a fantastic snow day! -giggles- I woke up at 6am, tore my eyelids open, and stared at the bottom of the TV screen from the W's to the C's before the channel was changed and we got lucky and bam it was on Lake Lehem which only means my school comes next. Then I saw in big, fat, bold, juicy white computer font CLOSED. Then I smiled this huge smile, as the majority of other schools were only given a delay. Once the TV was turned off, I slept until ten, but not a good sleep because I couldn't fall back asleep so it was more of a restless la...
