I Fought Vonage and I Won
2008-08-09 22:51:00
You may remember I had some issues with Vonage following my disconnection on July 7th. The gist of it is that I disconnected at the start of my billing cycle so Vonage had no right to take a monthly payment for July. I went back and forth with Customer Care (and I use that term “care” ...
Vonage stole $30.57 right from my checking account

Remember my problems with Vonage? Well it just keeps getting better and better. Let’s recap. Vonage has really sucky service. I work from home. On many conference calls people would say, “Christine I can’t hear you. You’re breaking up.” And I was on my home phone. That’s something I would expect occasionally from a cell phone as ...
Always read the small print…or why I hate Vonage
2008-07-08 23:09:00
I’ve mentioned before that we have had Vonage phone service. Yesterday we said goodbye to VoIP and got a landline installed again. It was part of a package deal. We also switched our internet and cable TV. Now we have just one bill for all three. But that wasn’t the only reason we switched. A long time ago I had MCI’s Neighborhood phone service. We got it right when bundling local and unlimited long distance was the cool thing to do. We were so excited to get unlimited long distance for the low, low price of $45.99 a month so we signed right up. And then the rates went up, up and up. Even with my $25 employee discount my bill was almost $40 a month. It was ridiculous. Then Vonage came along and promised unlimited long distance plus some international calling for just $24.99 a month. That was cheaper than what were paying so we were lured in by their charm and big promises. Last September we signed right up and didn’t look back. We had problems starting from d...
Vonage on crack
2008-07-04 16:46:00
The 4th of July is usually one of my favorite holidays. We have a lot of family traditions for the 4th of July holiday. Our cities Freedom Festival usually has a ton of activities scheduled for the holiday. There is the Red, White and Blue parade, the Balloon Glow, the annual kids race plus the 5K and 8K, the pancake breakfast and, of course, the cit fireworks display. Because of the flooding three weeks ago, all of that has been postponed until Labor Day. Since downtown was completely underwater and is now trying to dig out, we cannot have our usual festivities. It’s so sad. But one of our traditions was still on. Yesterday we had our annual family picnic at my grandma’s tree. And this year the whole family was able to come back (except for one of my cousins). My grandpa has been having some health problems, and was actually not feeling that great yesterday, but at least we were all together yesterday. It was wonderful to see the whole family again. A couple days ago my...

How Vonage makes telcos look like nice guys
2008-03-02 17:16:00
Vonage sucks! When you compete with a monopoly, that last thing you should do is treat customers worse than it does. While I feel that the telco’s lawsuits against Vonage are largely unwarranted, I feel little sympathy for them. I’m truly astonished that a company that continues to use such questionable business practices and downright ...

Those who own shares in Vonage or those who’re just about to get on board probably know what the year of 2007 has been to Vonage. Indeed, it was bad. Or should I say it was a complete disaster! Today, we’re going to look if the company managed to get out of this mess or not and what awaits for this company in 2008. Last year revealed what strengths and weaknesses Vonages has. Let's start from the weaknesses. read more in hotstocked.com

Vonage actually does something useful, takes on USF charges in Nebraska
2008-01-28 04:34:00
In the early days of VOIP services like Vonage, one of the most attractive features of the service was that it was exempt from the long laundry list of taxes and fees you get on the old school Telco bill. Since then VOIP subscribers have been forced to pay into the universal service fund in most states. The laws were quickly modified to include VOIP customers in the USF after the service became popular. So Vonage has struck back suing Nebraska’s PUC over the validity of VOIP customers being forced to pay into the state’s USF. In a lawsuit recently filed in U.S. District Court, Vonage says the Nebraska Public Service Commission and its officials should not force it to pay into the state’s Universal Service Fund. “These defendants know that Vonage’s service is subject to exclusive federal regulatory jurisdiction, yet they are attempting to compel Vonage to pay a state-law surcharge for the Nebraska Service Fund in violation of the United States Constituti...

Vonage Woes: 2007 was Tough Year for the VoIP Firm
2007-12-23 11:24:00
Vonage is facing some customer complaints over a multi-day outage this past weekend. But that's the least of its worries. On Friday telecommunications equipment maker Nortel Networks filed a lawsuit against Vonage in a U.S. District Court in Delaware claiming that it violated nearly a dozen patents. This past year has been a rough one for the voice over Internet protocol company. I have to say, the long-term outlook is getting bleaker for the firm as it faces a seemingly endless stream of lawsuits. At this point Vonage's lawyers should be experts with patent infringement lawsuits after the dealings with patent lawsuits filed by AT&T, Sprint-Nextel and Verizon. Those patent fights alone cost the broadband telephone company a grand total of $239 million, according to reports. It's been a sad tumble for Vonage after bursting onto the scene as one of the most promising VoIP firms out there. Oh, how quickly things have changed. 2007 has been particularly bad with the resignation of C...

Vonage owes $120 Million to Verizon, Appeal Denied
2007-11-17 01:51:00
Bloomberg reports that Vonage lost the appeal against courts decision against it regarding the Patent case by Verizon. Well I hope Vonage does not end up like a burned rocket. Nov. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Vonage Holdings Corp., the unprofitable Internet phone service provider, must pay $120 million to end a patent lawsuit won by Verizon Communications Inc. after a U.S. appeals court refused to reconsider the case. Vonage settled the infringement suit on Oct. 25 after Verizon won both a jury verdict and an appeal in the case. The accord left open the amount to be paid until the appeals court decided whether to grant Vonage's request for reconsideration. Legal costs have eaten into Vonage's cash flow and may increase its risk of bankruptcy. The Holmdel, New Jersey-based company said yesterday that it may not have enough money to pay $253.5 million in debt due as early as December 2008. Vonage, which generated cash of $22.5 million in the thir...

The 911 Modernization and Public Safety Bill Passed in the House.
2007-11-15 00:12:00
Nov 13, 2007: The 911 Modernization and Public Safety Act passed in the House of Representatives by roll call vote. The bill will promote and enhance public safety by facilitating the rapid deployment of IP-enabled 911 and E-911 services, encourage the Nation's transition to a national IP-enabled emergency network, and improve 911 and E-911 access to those with disabilities. The vote was held under a suspension of the rules to cut debate short and pass the bill, needing a two-thirds majority. The totals were 406 Ayes, 1 Nays, 25 Present/Not Voting. The Bill is an effort to bring Internet telephony companies in compliance with new Federal Communications Commission rules, will now allow VoIP providers, such as Skype, Vonage the direct access to the backbone of the E911 system which is in the hands of large telecom carriers. The Bill H.R.3403Tags: The 911 Modernization and Public Safety Act, e911, IP-enabled 911, Skype, Vonage, VoIP Providers, VoIP, E-911
Vonage Clears Up Last Legal Cloud on Horizon
2007-11-11 10:12:00
Tentative $39 million settlement with AT&T means that the VoIP pioneer can get on with business. That makes it three down and none (that we know of) to go. Vonage's tentative settlement of AT&T's patent-infringement lawsuit takes care of its last oppressive legal problem, following similar settlements with Sprint Nextel and Verizon. Now, the company can get on with the business of providing cheap consumer broadband VoIP. The question is how good that business will be, especially since the settlements will set the VoIP pioneer back a significant sum.The agreement in principle, which Vonage described in its Q3 financial-results announcement, would require it to pay AT&T $39 million over five years. That's a lot less than the $80 million it will pay Sprint and the $80 million to $120 million it will pay Verizon. While the combined payouts will amount to some $200 million or more, they eliminate some major uncertainties about Vonage's future. It's a big change from the d...

Ignorance is no excuse for telecoms in NSA illegal spying case
2007-11-05 21:31:00
Today former Attorney General and current AT&T lobbyist John Ashcroft had an editorial in the New York Times demanding that the Senate grant immunity against litigation for telecom companies that participated in the NSA spying program. It’s your typical “ZOMG LIVES ARE IN DANGER 9/11 PATRIOTISM!!!!1111″ swill, but one passage in particular bears citation–Ashcroft’s- idea that the combined might of these companies’ legal departments couldn’t possibly realize these orders were illegal: As a practical matter, in circumstances involving classified intelligence activities, a corporation will typically not know enough about the underlying circumstances and operations to make informed judgments about legality. Moreover, for an initiative like the terrorist surveillance program ? which the Office of Legal Counsel made clear was based on the Congressional authorization for the use of military force and the president?s war powers under the Constitu...
AT&T Sues Vonage, Demonstrates Survival Skills
2007-10-27 08:58:00
27 October 2007Stepping on high-profile upstart counters accusations of obsolescence.AT&T just reported its revenue for Q3 of 2007: $30.1 billion. Vonage reported revenue of $206 million for Q2, the VoIP company's latest numbers. AT&T is suing Vonage for patent infringement, after Sprint Nextel and Verizon did the same thing. And while it might seem like an uneven match, every company has the right and even duty to protect itself and what belongs to it. Still, AT&T is hardly in danger of going bankrupt ? or even losing a dollar or two in share price ? as a result of losing customers to Vonage. So it makes you wonder what the giant telephone company is protecting itself from. The obvious explanation is that AT&T is worried about losing control of its intellectual property. If a business doesn't defend its property from even the most minor misuse, the theory goes, it might lose its right to defend it. It's not unlike protecting a trademark by pouncing on every instan...
VoIP Education and Training Needed for Sales People
2007-10-27 06:59:00
I know you can get training on Asterisk at Digium, where education material and courses are provided for technicians, developers and self learners like me. But I could not find any sales training. Perhaps I did not look hard enough.Shoretel gives training across the board and also sales training for channel partners. This trend goes to most of the companies that provide VoIP services and hardware. But does it applies to all companies? Do these companies like Vonage, Skype understand the value of educated sales people? I guess not. Although not something I really think about, a post by one my favorite bloggers got me thinking. Yes, a lot of people are ignorant when it comes to VoIP.Russell Shaw at ZDNet has put it out interestingly..."I have my own theory as to why this is. There?s plenty of vendor-supplied training and support from the H-P?s of the world. But to my knowledge, there aren?t alot of Vonage, Skype, Packet8, etc. support types offering sales clinics to Frys, MicroCenter...

2007-10-26 08:57:00
Sipera, the VoIP security firm that I saw first at BlackHat 2007 has warned VoIP firms before disclosing the vulnerabilities. There are multiple vulnerabilities, advisories and they are listed here. The tests focused specifically of residential and SMB VoIP service and equipment. I was surprised to find strong authentication, signaling security, and media encryption were lacking, looks like everybody is following Microsoft. Get it Out there first and then we fix it as troubles jump up.So what does these vulnerabilities do to users? spoofing, eavesdropping, and remote exploits are some of the possibilities.I will write later today about what you should be looking in VoIP Security.Following is the news release by Sipera;Richardson, TX, October 23, 2007 ? Sipera VIPER? Lab, operated by Sipera Systems, the leader in comprehensive VoIP/UC security solutions, today disclosed multiple threat advisories for users of VoIP services and equipment from Vonage, Globe7 and Grandstream. Vonage Settles the patent lawsuit with Verizon
2007-10-26 04:59:00
Vonage Settles the patent lawsuit with Verizon as well. May be this was inspired by the settlement Vonage did earlier with Sprint Nextel Company. I hope the can also address the AT&T lawsuit and move on to do real VoIP IP Telephony business.Following is the news release; HOLMDEL, N.J., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In June 2006, Verizon Services Corp. brought a lawsuit against Vonage Holdings Corp. to enforce several Verizon patents relating to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. In March 2007, a jury held that Vonage is infringing three valid Verizon patents. The jury awarded $58 million in damages. The trial judge subsequently issued an injunction which was stayed pending Vonage's appeal. In September 2007, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld the trial court's decisions on infringement, validity, and injunction as to two of the Verizon patents (the '574 and '711) and remanded as to the third patent (the '880). Vonage filed a petition f...

AT&T, Vonage Lawsuit Revisited.
2007-10-23 09:34:00
I was already skeptical when I wrote this post about AT&T suing Vonage. But after reading an article by Information Week's Alexander Wolfe, I am enlightened now certainly know it is bull frog trying to swallow a small fry.Mr. Wolfe has gone to pains analyzing the patent documents that seem to be the patent related to the case, (He was unable to get the court papers but I am sure some body soon will!). Just a few paragraphs into the article it is evident that this is an effort by lawyers to get some part of AT&T's easily earned money.I whole heartedly agree with Mr.Wolfe that the US patent system is broken. So I am looking out for some body take US Patent office to court ;), I can't because I am a poor guy. And rich guys will not do it because Patents, specially broken ones, makes the rich ans keep them rich.I invite you to read Mr.Wolfe's article, and to see for your self if this law suit has any merit. May be it is time to break up MA Bell again ;).Tags: AT&T, Vonag...

Vonage Get Sued by AT&T Now, For Infringing VoIP Patents.
2007-10-21 09:18:00
Looks like Vonage does not have a place to hide these days. AT&T Inc. on Friday has filed a lawsuit against VOIP provider Vonage, seeking damages for alleged patent infringement. The case was filed in Western District of Wisconsin. Why Wisconsin? you may NOT ask but Russell Shaw at ZDNet thinks that there could be more to this;"Less consequential, but more head-scratching: why the filing in Western Wisconsin? Is this an attempt on AT&T?s part to seek a decision in a U.S. Court their lawyers perceive to be friendly toward patent holders?"AT&T alleged that Vonage wilfully infringed an AT&T patent related to telephone systems that allow people to make VOIP (voice-over-Internet Protocol) calls using standard telephone devices.I think it is big corporations not wanting to share what could be theirs. Or perhaps get them while they are down. On the other hand is it not the same allegation that Vonage just settled with Sprint Nextel?, more than 100 patents covering technology...

Why Skype and Vonage must die ?
2007-10-15 13:39:00
12 October 2007Skype and Vonage illustrate what is wrong with user communications: They are "closed" and not standards-based. These strategies support business models that are not in line with 21st century wants and needs. They have to go!I've been a user of Skype and Vonage voice over IP (VoIP) services for a long time. I use Skype to talk with my editor at and to connect with a few friends back in England, while Vonage has reduced my regular phone bills enormously, particularly for international calls. These things are on the plus side. The minus side? With Vonage, it has been the aggravation factor: It is hard to get good quality, at least over DSL, without resorting to blind experimentation, and using it to support TiVo or a home alarm system is a pain. Even when everything appears to be working with Vonage, you get occasional weird sound-quality problems, and faxing is only moderately satisfactory (incomplete transmissions seem to account for about half of all faxes I send).Yet...
