English votes on English matters - Unique Powers.
2008-06-09 11:07:00 Why is the question of English votes on English matters so difficult to sort out? We've had Malcolm Rifkind's Grand Committee, which it is argued will only add another layer of government. Now after a lengthy process Ken Clarke comes up with another bloody stupid idea. From the Telegraph: He (Ken Clarke) is said to have advised allowing all MPs to vote on English legislation at the initial second reading stage of parliamentary scrutiny. But only English MPs would get to vote during the detailed committee stage of the legislative process, where real changes can be effected. At the third and final reading, all MPs could once again vote, but a new parliamentary undertaking would prevent any party using Scottish votes to block amendments made by English MPs.Why oh why can't we just stop Scottish MPs voting in England on any matter that would normally be devolved to Scotland? In other words - any subject that English MPs are not allowed to vote on in Scotland. Surely that would be a f...

Who’ll win Tuesday’s votes on rent control?
2008-06-01 12:30:00 A new Field Poll shows a split decision heading into Tuesday’s election over dueling state measures that could decide the future of rent control in California. The poll of 660 likely voters, conducted May 17-26, shows Proposition 98 losing 33%-43%, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1%. Proposition 99 was favored by 48% and opposed by 30% with the same margin of error. If both initiatives pass, the one with the most votes will become law. (CLICK HERE for the full poll.) The primary focus of both measures is to close a loophole in the state’s eminent domain law to prevent government from taking private property for other private uses. But Prop. 98, with the strong support of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, apartment owners, the mobile home industry and the California Farm Bureau, upped the ante by adding a provision that also would phase out rent control statewide. Prop. 99 supporters, who include tenants rights groups, seniors, mobile home associations an...

McMore of the Same Votes 100% with Bush in 2008
2008-05-28 06:27:00 When John McCain started preparing himself to run for president in 2008, he knew his votes in the senate would be very important. According to the Congressional Quarterly, when John McCain bothered to show up to vote in the senate, he voted with President Bush 100 percent of the time. CQ determines which pieces of legislation fit with the president?s goals and other literature to determine where the president would stand on the bill. John McCain was voted the most absent senator in 2008, but when he did bother to show up, he voted with the president 100 percent. Granted McCain was campaigning during 2008, but there were many other senators also campaigning for president. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joseph Biden, and Christopher Dodd were all serving in the senate while running for president but did not miss as many votes as McCain did. McCain lost his status as a ?maverick? Republican in the senate when he took his firm position along side President ...

Senate votes again against domestic oil production. WHY!!!?!??!?!??
2008-05-17 22:49:00 Look, I think Wayne Allard is a putz… an admittedly quick assessment based on limited info. But he got this one right: May 1st, 2008 - Washington, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) joined New Mexico Senator Pete Domenici, the Republican leader of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and other Republican Senators to announce the introduction of the American Energy Production Act of 2008. The bill will address America’s soaring gas prices by focusing on common sense measures that will increase production of oil and gas in America. Allard specifically addressed the critical issue regarding the needed development of oil shale in Colorado as an important piece of addressing the energy supply shortages facing the country. “North America’s 3.7 trillion barrel resource of unconventional fuels exceeds by nearly 40% the entire world’s known remaining conventional oil supplies,” said Allard. “U.S. oil shale resources alone exceed 2 trillion barrels of pot...

Clinton and Obama pander for more votes!
2008-05-13 13:05:00 The West Virginia primary contest is being held today and the candidates are all over the state. Voter Doris Smith, (pictured right), went downtown early Monday to see about getting tickets to Barack Obama's rally. Advance seats were sold out and the only option was to stand in line for up two hours or more and hope for the best. Disappointed, she decided instead to go for breakfast and walked right into Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign stop. "Oh, I didn't want to do this," Smith said, embarrassed, wearing an Obama T-shirt as Clinton walked into the restaurant. "I didn't know she was going to be here." Smith, who lives in nearby Institute, said she liked Clinton but prefers Obama. As Clinton left the building, Smith stepped up to shake her hand. She told the candidate that getting a Democrat in office was her priority. Clinton agreed with her while touching Smith's shoulder gently, and smiling. Talk about awkward. Clinton is expected to win the state by about 20 points. Bu...

Market historian votes in on the Presidential election cycle
2008-05-09 07:00:00 "The Presidential Election cycle is one Wall Street truism that has historically proven to have merit for investors," explains advisor and market historian Jim Stack (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=1993).In- his InvesTech Market Analyst (http://www.thestockadvisors.co-m/ccount/click.php?id=1993) the advisor reviews the basics of this cycle, its historical reasoning, and what the could portend for the market's action between now and Election Day."Since we are in the midst of an election year, this cycle warrants review. During the 4-year Presidential Election cycle there is a characteristic variation in annual stock market returns that is evident in historical data and actually makes sense when one thinks about it. "Basically, it boils down to just 'good politics.' Politicians worth their salt understand the goal: get anybad economic news over early during your term and have the economy back on track and humming along by Election Day. "Consequently, the...

Obama Just Has Too Many Darned Votes!
2008-05-08 16:46:00 Seriously, only in Liberal World© Following in the footsteps of other bloggers like Jeralyn Merritt and Armando, I must urge the superdelegates, the media and other creative class left blogs to be aware of something before it is too late. I’ve crunched the numbers, looked them over again and again, then again with a sprinkling of eye of newt and found the weakness in Barack Obama’s candidacy: He’s getting too many votes. OK, Olliver is saying this tongue in cheek, or, he’s applying a bit of kryptonite to a few fools (yes, I know most won’t get that reference to Olliver’s old weblog header) Just a little humor to brighten your day. 2008-05-06 19:52:00 As seen on Donna Darko, and confirmed by People Magazine:"Elizabeth: I like Hillary?s health care plan. I think her tenacity shows a real strength that?s inside her." I wish we didn't have to wait to election day for this, but I have great respect for how the Edward's played their cards in this race. I think John has held things close in hope of another run at VP, which seems silly to me, but that is what I think he's up to.

House Votes to Close Code of Ethics Loophole on Contracts Performed Outside
2008-04-24 04:38:00 The requirement found at FAR 52,203-13 was implemented on December 24, 2007 and requires any contractor who is awarded a contract in excess of $5 million to have a written Code of Business Ethics and Conduct within thirty days after award. Large business firms must also implement a training and compliance program within ninety days (see our earlier blog article for additional information). The requirements, however, did not apply to contracts that were to be performed outside of the United States. This “exemption” for foreign projects has now received the attention of the U.S. House of representatives. As reported today by the Associated Press, the House has voted to close a multibillion-dollar loophole in a crackdown on contract fraud, approving plans to force the Bush administration to act within six months. At issue is a Bush administration rule requiring government contractors to report misuse of taxpayer dollars to the Justice Department. The rule, as... |
