California Auto Association broke ground near the BART station in Pleasant Hill for a new office that will accommodate 1,000 workers. And Varian is expanding in the Shadelands Business Park. They will be spending about 25 million dollars on the renovations and expansion and will be moving about 100 employees from Palo Alto to Walnut Creek. Varian will retain its headquarters in Palo Alto, but most of the employees will be in Walnut Creek. Varian will be demolishing a 37,000 sq. ft building and putting up a 43,000 building in its place. Lately the Shadelands Business Park has become a hotbed for medical (Kaiser has a big facility there with opthamology center), there is an orthopedic center, the Joint Genome Institute.
