Qalandar | The Wandering Sufis
2008-08-16 10:04:00
Qalandar (Persian origin, also written as Qalander) is a title given to sufi holy men especially in South Asia. Some famous Sufis with the title Qalandar include Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalander and Bu Ali Shah Qalandar. The Qalandariyah also refer to the name of a sect of roaming Sufi dervishes. The Qalandariyah, Qalandaris or "kalandars" are wanderering Sufi dervishes. The term covers a variety of sects, not centrally organized. One was founded by Qalandar Yusuf al-Andalusi of Andalusia, Spain. Some kalandars practiced asceticism and often used hashish, alcohol, and other intoxicants.Starting in the early 12th century, the movement gained popularity in Greater Khorasan and neighbouring regions. The first references are found in 11th century prose text Qalandarname (The Tale of the Kalandar) attributed to Ansar? Haraw?. The term Qalandariyyat (the Qalandar condition) appears to be first applied by Sanai Ghaznavi (d 1131) in seminal poetic works where diverse practices are described. Part...
wandering in the woods
2008-07-28 18:10:00
There is a mystic dance in forest trees. the Hobgoblin burrows near the crickets, shadowed under innocuous thickets. Pouncing on the insect prey that he sees. While fairies pollinate disguised as bees. Wise sprites bid the wood creatures to a hush, Stirring human footfalls create a rush. Just enough of a trail is left to tease. Usually only the children stray. As most the ...

Color Burst and Wandering Mind
2008-05-13 15:50:00
I am dealing with a wandering mind this week. My mind has a grown a mind of its own and has been going here and there and everywhere. Which is why it has become somewhat difficult for me to put together a comprehensive post [or do anything else that requires concentration]. But. I can not leave you without some interior inspiration as another hot summer week starts. That just does not feel right. Let my mind continue to do the thinking bit. Sending a burst of colors for your bedrooms from my heart. :-) Will be back with more substantial eye candy as the week progresses and my mind rests. Come and meet me again this week. And 'Knock' on the comments section so that I know you visited. :-)[Image courtesy: ArchitecturalDigest, Taschen, MarieClaireMaison]Thanks for subscribing to An Indian Summer!

Wandering Along
2008-04-10 15:00:00
by Nathan McIntyreI've gotten some emails and comments recently that first of all, I thought I'd take a moment to address. It seems that some of you fair people out there believe that I, or Cameron have "gone off the deep end," or "drank the kool-aid" of the left. I can assure you this is not true. My dear Conservative friends, how jaded and blunt you have become. How little some of you read. How much talk radio you digest. How Bush's gaggle of "yes men" has dulled your wit.If any of us here on the Porch have seemed to and fro over the issues, it's only because we are being honest. Simply put, there are issues of which Barack Obama has very clearly communicated, and quite frankly, at some points I agree. There are many points of contention as well. It is not because I am unstable, or "too weakminded" as one called us. Rather, it is because I am human, and fully equipped with a heart and brain. The two are searching for a home amongst the rubble of the American political landscape...
Obama: Eye to eye with Israel ? or wandering eye?
2008-03-26 14:32:00
For those who believe that the key to lowering the political temperature in the Middle East lies in snuffing out the pilot light on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Senator Obama’s otherwise transcendent race speech offered little of his trademark hope. A view “that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam,” as he characterized that of Reverend Jeremiah Wright, is “profoundly distorted.” Once again, whatever you may think of them, Israel’s policies toward Palestine were accepted as Bible. In fact, though, there’s a brewing discontent with Obama on the part of Israel hard-liners. The American Spectator’s Robert Goldberg recently unearthed a 2003 interview with Obama’s military adviser and national campaign co-chairman, Tony McPeak, already in the news for comparing Bill Clinton’s camp...

Autism and Wandering, Missing Autistic Girl Found Safe
2008-03-07 22:01:00
It is sometimes difficult to listen to, or read, statements by a few celebrity, high functioning autistic persons, and others who embrace their ideology, who claim that autism is just another natural variation of the human condition, a difference to be embraced, a joy in itself. I have never pretended to accept this view. At least not for those, like my son, for whom autism presents serious life restrictions and risks. One of those dangerous, even life threatening risks, is the tendency of some autistics to wander off, to get lost ... or worse. In some cases things end well ..... in others they do not. This story has a good ending:Missing Autistic Girl, 13, Found Safe, ... Janelle Halbrook had last been seen near Lake Center Middle School at Clarkman Street and Pioneer Boulevard around 4 p.m. Wednesday, Whittier police Officer Jason Zuhlke said. ... The mother told police that Halbrook has a tendency to wander whenever her routine is interrupted, as she did in a similar "wal...

Review: The Wandering Minstrel
2008-02-09 22:52:00
The Wandering Minstrelby Ann PatrickPicking up a hitchhiker was something that Jody had been warned about. The moment she stopped and the dark good looking man slid into the car, she knew he was going to be trouble. Trouble for her and all her plans for the future. He was cynical and world weary; she was just starting out on her career path. They had absolutely nothing in common, but the attraction between them was too explosive to ignore. Her family and friends had often warned Jody about the dangers of picking up strangers on the road. And, until the beginning of this story, she has taken their advice to heart. However, for some reason she cannot seem to follow their admonitions when she sees a tall stranger hitchhiking. The stranger, known only as James, seems oddly familiar. It is not until few cities have passed, that Jody realizes who the enigmatic stranger is: it is none other than Cat Grant, a famous heartthrob and biggest singer ever! As their relationship builds, Jody finds...

Wandering around the Candaba Bird Sanctuary
2008-01-26 14:55:00
Many may have noticed the Candaba Viaduct, that long bridge connecting Bulacan and Pampanga along the NLEX, but do not realize that that around it is a very important ecosystem, the Candaba Bird Sanctuary. The Candaba Swamp has always been a vital haven for migratory birds. It is so important that it has been nominated to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. If you haven't seen the Candaba Bird Sanctuary, here's your chance. On February 1 and 2, Candaba will be organizing the Ibon Ebon Festival. And Candaba has enough reason to celebrate. According to the results of the recent Asian Waterbird Census, the conservation efforts of the town are working! The festival features the migratory birds (ibon or ayup in Kapampangan) and the municipality's growing duck-egg (ebun) industry. For some reason, we found ourselves exploring the Candaba Bird Sanctuary today. I was with my classmates doing a windshield survey in Pampanga for our class project. And we wandered into C...
Wandering the web...bacon, booze and other tasty tidbits
2008-01-24 22:42:00
For a number of reasons - mostly sloth, indecision, not wanting to brave the tundra outside my door, er, I mean research - I have been wandering around the web a bit today and there is some amusing stuff out there. Things I want to eat, things I want to drink, things I want...so I thought I'd share a few. Before we start, we should pour ourselves a drink. Something interesting. Something  local. Something that includes at least one basic food group. How about Bacon Vodka?  McAuliflower of Brownie Points  has been doing a little meandering of her own lately, but I think she still lives close enough to be local and I am quite sure she will back me up on bacon being its own food group so I am covered, right? More tidbits after the jump...If the drink is inadequate to satisfy your bacon craving, check out this Bacon Cheese Baconburger topped with something that could become one of my favorite things: Walla Walla Sweet Onion Mustard with Smokey Bacon. Because nothing sa...

Wandering Breast Cancer Cells!
2008-01-04 00:00:00
We’ve often discussed that from a life insurance standpoint, breast cancer caught in the in situ stage, confined to a single milk duct, offers the best options for insurability post treatment. Early stage and grade lead to better rates, quicker. It has been thought that that DCIS is essentially stagnant, but if the tumor contains “motile” ...

A wandering mind wonders
2007-11-19 16:01:00
I'm back online with nothing to do now... mainly because internals are close.I've noticed (and i'm sure i've mentioned it before) that the amount of time wasted online is very closely related to the proximity of my exams. The closer they are, the more time spent.... since i couldn't find anything better to occupy myself with at this moment, i've turned to my blog (the very reason i created it in the first place).I've also noticed that more and more of each day is spent doing absolutely nothing. Now this isn't a new phenomenon by any chance... but normally when your just hanging around, you don't actively think about how you aren't doing anything at all (not even talking at times... ). To my great chagrin the screen of my mp3 player has cracked, so when i'm sitting around in college and don't feel like talking much, and am too lazy to go back home... i just end up sitting. Sitting can be fun, but it takes practice to shut everyone out, and frankly i'm out of practice. Eit...

The Wandering Red Balloon
2007-10-07 00:29:00
Just when you think you know it all, some 19-month old kid comes along and teaches you another valuable lesson about life.My neighbour's daughter lost her favorite ball. There are few things that bring this 19-month-old more joy than playing with her favorite ball. And, of course, they want their daughter to have all the happiness she can get. So,my neighbour and I headed out to the  corner store to replace the missing ball. Little Lady enjoyed the outing, since there were so many exciting things to pull off shelves. And when we reached the ball aisle, she nearly jumped for joy. She picked up a shiny red ball and clutching it with both hands, headed for the cash counter. While waiting to pay, the young Lady caught sight of a red balloon that had obviously been used for some promotion, but was now wandering aimlessly around the floor like a lost puppy.Pure joy!If you think a ball can bring happiness, wait 'til you see the sparkle in the eye of a toddler wh...

Clay Aiken Airplane Fight over Clay's Wandering Foot

Clay Aiken was involved in a dispute on an airplane Saturday while en route to Tulsa. It seems Clay couldn't keep his feet off off a woman's armrest and she finally tired of his diva ass and let him have it.FBI Special Agent Gary Johnson confirmed there was a dispute between a male and female passenger but wouldn't say if the female was indeed Aiken.Heh.Johnson added that there were allegations of the woman giving the man a slight shove.Aiken reportedly joked about the incident on stage during a performance later that evening saying he was beat up by a girl.Tulsa Airport Authority spokeswoman Alexis Higgins said the passengers were held until FBI agents arrived to interview them. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made.Source
