American Jews on War and Peace: What Do the Polls Tell Us and Not Tell Us?
2007-12-25 15:02:00 by Dr. James Petras Once again, a poll recently released by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) (1) has confirmed that on some questions of major significance there are vast differences between the opinion of the Presidents of the Major American Jewish Organizations and the mass of American Jews. Introduction On questions of the Iraq war, the escalation of US military forces in Iraq (the ‘Surge’) and military action against Iran, most Jewish Americans differ from the leaders of the major American Jewish organizations. Most liberal, progressive or radical Jewish commentators have emphasized these differences to argue, “most American Jews resoundingly reject the Middle East militarism and GOP foreign policy championed by right-wing Jewish factions.”(2) This progressive interpretation however avoids an even more fundamental question: How is it that a majority of US Jews who, according to the AJC poll (and several others going back over two decades) differ with the princip...
War and peace
2007-12-18 23:36:00 Human behavior never ceases to amaze me. We usually show the best / worst when something threatens our dear way of living. Like, for example, the toilet broke. Again. So I made a truce with Sabrina, my roommate, and we are scheming against the boys. They are the biggest pare of wusses we have ever seen in our lives. One of them is jobless and watches TV all day, and the other one, although he claims he is a cameraman, works in a call center, and he calls in sick every other day, when he, of course, stays home and watches TV. Oh, and sometimes they play cards. At the beginning I thought they were amusing, but now I think they are plain retarded. They can't even call someone to fix the damn toilet, and the landlady gave them money to fix it. And they can't care less, cos they're going to France in a few days. So Sabrina and I are planning to confront them tonight, and to push them do something about it. I have no idea what argument I can use to make them take action. Maybe I can ca...
War and peace
2007-12-10 18:35:00 We're always fighting a battle somewhere. We win some, we lose some. Most are ongoing--we advance, then retreat, then advance. Three stops forward, sometimes one back, sometimes three, then a half forward, etc.. We often live with the conflicting feelings of euphoria and heartache at the same time. I had always thought “heartache“ was a metaphorical word, but sometimes I have walked around with a literal ache in my chest, grieving over the bad choice that one of our “loved ones” has made, such as when Gait recently ran away, and we are sure she relapsed in her addictions. But at the very same time I might be floating from excitement when someone makes a good choice, such as when Pear decided to come back after a few weeks serving men at a night-time “restaurant”. - I know what Jesus meant when He said how much Heaven whoops it up when a broken person says “Enough. I'm coming home.” We ar...
Captain Max Von Stephanitz Speaks About Horand Von Grafrath SZ 1
2007-11-10 21:14:00 Here's what Mr. Stephanitz said about Horand -- the father of all GSDs."Horand (Picture on the right) embodied for the enthusiasts of that time the fulfillment of their fondest dreams. He was big for that period, between 24" and 24 1/2", even for the present day a good medium size, with powerful frame, beautiful lines, and a nobly formed head. Clean and sinewy in build, the entire dog was one live wire. His character was on a par with his exterior qualities; marvelous in his obedient fidelity to his master, and above all else, the straightforward nature of a gentleman with a boundless zest for living. Although untrained in puppy hood, nevertheless obedient to the slightest nod when at this master's side; but when left to himself, the maddest rascal, the wildest ruffian and incorrigible provoker of strife. Never idle, always on the go; well disposed to harmless people, but no cringer, mad about children and always in love. What could not have been the accomplishments of such a dog ...
The Islamic law of War and Peace [according to Prof Majid Khadduri]
2007-11-05 15:48:00 Where does Islam really stand on the issue of war and peace?Yoram Ettinger has kindly brought together significant quotes from the book, War and Peace in the Law of Islam, by Prof Majid Khadduri. Khadduri was an Arab nationalist historian who was made a professor at Johns Hopkins University. This happened long before Edward Said got into American academe. So Khadduri [b. 1909-d. 2007] was a strong voice --and not the only one-- representing Islam and Arab nationalism in the American university, although Said complained in his books that the Western university world was not listening to the poor Arabs and Muslims, nor trying to succor them and their manifold afflictions in their time of difficulty. Khadduri was an admirer of Haj Amin el-Husseini [al-Husayni], Hitler's chief Arab collaborator --a collaborator in the Holocaust too. Emet m'Tsiyon has already posted several items that quote from Khadduri's book, Independent Iraq. These excerpts from Khadduri's book concern the 1933 m...

The Travels/Travails, Part 2 - War and Peace
2007-10-31 17:53:00 [editor's note, by Brian Galliford] This is the second part of Dock Ellis' recent trip laden with Bills talk. Some hilarious stuff - the Rocky IV reference sealed the deal. Part One Part 2 I continued with my talk with Chris. "Still, I bet we beat the Jets 6-3," - how agonizingly close that came to being reality - "and, just like last week, people will just say that the other team happened to have a bad day." "Welcome to the Tampa-2. Until you guys make it big, you won't get any credit for any wins. That's what it is. Leave the glamour to the [expletive deleted] pretty-boys putting on makeup for their ads, or hitting the clubs in Miami." "The best part about how we're running things is that most all of the discussions among the team takes place `in-house'. DJ and Marv have a team that is built to work as a unit. I'm really a big JP fan, and I know we have to have controversies around QBs, whatever their qualities, if there's any chan...
GSD Acclimatizes To Warfare
2007-10-09 22:18:00 Friends! Lend me your ears please. I?m talking about something regarding Alsatians in wars. Alsatians played a real vital role in the wars, although other breeds such as Airedale terriers, Rottweilers, Collies, Lurchers, Giant Schanuzers, Bull Terriers etc. were also trained to become used to gunfire and bangs of exploding grenades and shells. Training up the war dogs was as important as giving guidance for loading of rifles and hitting the target.Dogs ? especially GSDs used to be the invaluable assets to the European regiment in World War I. The funny thing is that the services of dogs were not appreciated during the early years of the World War I. But they started to gain high respect when it was realized that dogs can accomplish great things. With the demand rising high, the War Office had put forward an appeal before the dog shelters and dog owners to give their dogs for war training. To meet the ever rising demand for a true courageous, intelligent and powerful breed of dogs, a...
Fighting for freedom in Burma
2007-09-29 15:05:00 Let’s face us, the vast majority of us know diddly squat about the situation in Burma. It’s one of those peculiar places in south-east Asia that aren’t on the flight path of the major airlines that we tend to get around on so there aren’t any stopovers there such as are commonplace in Malaysia, Singapore and ...
War and Peace in the Ancient World ????????
2007-09-16 03:23:00 K.A. Raaflaub, War and Peace in the Ancient World ????????Blackwell Publishing Limited | ISBN 1405145269 | 2006 | PDF | 2 MB | 400 pagesThis book is the first to focus on war and peace in the ancient world from a global perspective. 19 distinguished scholars, all of whom are experts in their fields, discuss different aspects of this fascinating subject in relation to a large number of early civilizations, from China and India through West Asia (Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Hittites, Israel, Persia, and early Islam) to the Mediterranean (Greece, Rome, and early Christianity) and the Americas (the Aztecs and the Iroquois Peace League). The book demonstrates that ancient societies, no less than modern ones, suffered from the losses and destructions caused by war, and yearned for peace and prosperity. It offers remarkable insights into the different responses ancient societies developed in order not only to defend their territory, but also to avoid war and restore peace. Some early societies...

Rethinking War And Peace ?????????
2007-07-31 18:29:00 ??????: ?????????Author:Diana FrancisFormat:PDF 1.85MBPages: 368 pages Publisher: Pluto Press (July 21, 2004) Language: English ISBN-10: 0745321887 ISBN-13: 978-0745321882 Book DescriptionIs war ever a just way to resolve conflict? Diana Francis argues that it is not. With passion and eloquence, she mounts a head-on challenge to the belief that war as an institution is either necessary or effective for good.Refuting the notion that human nature condemns us to perpetual carnage, she argues that we can change the ways we think and the systems we live by. In a tightly reasoned discussion of the ethics of war and peace she asserts that war is a gross denial of the core values on which peace depends, and that Just War theory has failed and deceived us.The book explores alternative ways of confronting aggression and injustice, showing that these are neglected but well proven. Francis argues that our security can be enhanced by recognition of our shared responsibility for each other and ou...
War And Peace In The Middle East
2007-07-08 13:59:00 My jaw about hit the floor when I read this quote… If Syria?s coup attempt in Lebanon is allowed to mature, the odds are that the war everyone?s predicting will in fact take place. And as incredible as this sounds, Syria is arming missiles with chemical warheads for use against Israel, believing that if they ...

Indicators of peace
2007-07-08 09:55:00 Northern Ireland hasn’t been in the international news much lately but that’s not really an indication of peace as such, more an indication that violence isn’t happening which isn’t quite the same thing (welcome as non-violence always is, of course). In fact the first indications of the arrival of peace was on its way started quite ...

Hypocrisy, Democracy, War and Peace
2007-06-20 15:41:00 Here is an excerpt of a dinner keynote address by Gareth Evans, President, International Crisis Group, to Harvard University Weatherhead Center for International Affairs Conference on Democracy in Contemporary Global Politics, Talloires, France, 16 June 2007. The topic is about the wisdom promoting democratic government vs human rights. International Crisis Group It is interesting to ponder just which of our sins it is that ? in the league tables of most admired professions ? puts politicians down there with used car salesmen and child molesters. I don't think it is any of the familiar seven deadlies: we know from recent US history that electorates can live with lust, and ? if my experience in Australia even begins to match that elsewhere ? gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride don?t seem to be show-stoppers either. My own judgment, for what it's worth, is what people most associate with politicians as a class, and most hate about them as a result, is hypocrisy, and all...
War and Peace and Primates?and Podcasts
