Fort Lewis 5: War Crimes or Another Example of the Military Justice System
2010-09-28 12:24:00 The case of five (main defendants, with seven more charged and potentially even more on the way) soldiers from the 5th Stryker Brigade charged with murdering Afghans for sport is one of those stories that, unfortunately, has all the elements of a blockbuster media hit: drugs, violence, grisly "factual details," betrayal, and even the alleged hoarding of "souvenirs" related to the killings. If the media reports are to be believed, there was a whole group of drugged-up modern-day Ed Geins running around Afghanistan, acting like serial killers and carrying around pieces of people as casually as most of us carry a pack of gum. The media frenzy is almost as bloodthirsty as the alleged "facts" of the case. They can't get enough of it. It would seem that the only thing that sells better than sex lately is the idea of American troops gone wild.

It thereby confirmed in most regards a 2007 judgment by the Court of Appeal in The Hague, which had found Van Anraat guilty of being an accessory to a violation of the laws and customs of war for having 'intentionally provided the opportunity and means' for attacks with mustard gas carried out in 1987 and 1988. Between 1980 and 1988, Van Anraat had supplied Saddam Hussein's regime with at least 1...
Children as Unlamented Victims of Bush?s War Crimes
2009-05-09 10:05:00 By Michael HaasSimulposted with Information Clearing HouseMay 01, 2009 -- -- Torture has received the most attention among the many war crimes of the Bush administration. But those who support Bush?s pursuit of the ?war on terror? have not been impressed by recriminations over torture. Worse than torture are the murders of at least 50 prisoners in Abu Ghraib, Afghanistan, and Guantánamo, but again the hard-hearted are unimpressed when those whom they perceive as terrorists receive illegal extrajudicial capital punishment. The case for abusing children, however, is more difficult to support. The best kept secret of the Bush?s war crimes is that thousands of children have been imprisoned, tortured, and otherwise denied rights under the Geneva Conventions and related international agreements. Yet both Congress and the media have strangely failed to identify the very existence of child prisoners as a war crime. In the Islamic world, however, there is no such silence. Indeed, the prophet ...

Former war crimes prosecutor alleges Kosovan army harvested organs from Ser
2008-04-22 15:16:00 Carla Del Ponte, the ex-chief prosecutor for war crimes in former Yugoslavia, has unleashed a storm of recrimination with allegations of a trade in human body parts in Kosovo and Albania after Nato bombed Serbia in 1999. Del Ponte claims, based on what she describes as credible reports and witnesses, that Kosovan Albanian guerrillas transported hundreds of Serbian prisoners into northern Albania where they were killed, and their organs "harvested" and trafficked out of Tirana airport. The Kosovan government, now headed by the former guerrilla leader Hashim Thaci, dismisses the claims as untrue, while Serbia and Russia are demanding a war crimes investigation into the allegations. Del Ponte, now a Swiss ambassador, has been ordered to keep silent by the Swiss government. The allegations are aired in Del Ponte's just published memoirs of her eight years as chief prosecutor for the international war crimes tribunal for former Yugoslavia, based in The Hague. Fact or fiction: Should Bush administration be indicted for war crimes?
2008-04-16 11:33:00 From: 411 Politics Fact or Fiction 04.14.08: Week 85 4. This week, on Chris Matthew's show, in response to Matthews asking the question, "tell me something I don't know," blogger Andrew Sullivan of Atlantic.com said, "this man, these men [Bush and other high level administration officials] will be indicted for war crimes." Though we're not sure they will, this man, these men OUGHT to be tried for war crimes.Tom Head: FICTION. George W. Bush DESERVES to be indicted for war crimes, but I don't know whether he ought to be. We need to ask ourselves, first, who it is that would be doing the indicting. If it's a future Democratic administration, then it will be seen as a partisan attack writ large and will present no moral victory, even in the event of a conviction. If it's a future Republican administration, then independent counsel--which we do not currently have--would be necessary to ensure that the prosecution has any teeth. If it's an international human ...

News: US Soldiers Testify About War Crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq
2008-03-18 21:21:00 Dozens of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans publicly testified this weekend about crimes they committed during the course of battle, many of which were prompted by the orders or policies laid down by superior officers. The weekend gathering, called the Winter Soldier Event demonstrated that well-publicized incidents of U.S. brutality, including the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the massacre of an entire family of Iraqis in the town of Haditha, are not isolated incidents perpetrated by "a few bad apples," as many politicians and military leaders have claimed. They are part of a pattern, the organizers said, of "an increasingly bloody occupation." One testimony:"Apr. 18, 2006 was the date of my first confirmed kill. He was innocent, I called him the fat man. He was walking back to his house and I killed him in front of his father and friend. My first shot made him scream and look into my eyes, so I looked at my friend and said, 'Well, I can't let that happen,' and shot him again. A...

The Global Impact of Bush's War Crimes in Iraq: King Midas in Reverse
2007-11-27 08:38:00 by Walter C. Uhler Journalist Robert Fisk recently explained the Bush/Cheney abomination in the Middle East quite succinctly, when he asserted: "The world in the Middle East is growing darker and darker by the hour. Pakistan. Afghanistan. Iraq. "Palestine". Lebanon. From the borders of Hindu Kush to the Mediterranean, we - we Westerners that is - are creating (as I have said before) a hell disaster. Next week, we are supposed to believe in peace in Annapolis, between the colorless American apparatchik and Ehud Olmert, the Israeli Prime Minister who has no more interest in a Palestinian state than his predecessor Ariel Sharon." [Robert Fisk, "Darkness falls on the Middle East," Independent.co.uk, 24 Nov. 2007] On Friday, November 23rd, a bomb exploded in a pet market in central Baghdad. Bush's Campaign of Lies to Conceal War Crimes
2007-10-12 12:16:00 by Walter C. Uhler During his recent, hour-long interview on Al-Arabiya TV, President Bush denied "the U.S. is gearing up to attack Iran" and dismissed as "'gossip' reports in the Arab press that he has issued orders to senior U.S. military officials to prepare for an attack on Iran at the end of January or in February." [AP, Arizona Daily Star, Oct. 6, 2007] He then added: "Evidently, there's a lot of gossip in parts of the country - world that try to scare people about me personally or my country or what we stand for." Gossip is it? Or has the Decider simply repressed or forgotten all the lies he told during the run-up to his illegal, immoral invasion and murderous occupation of Iraq? For example, has Bush simply repressed or forgotten his lie on December 28, 2001, when, after an extensive secret briefing by General Tommy Franks about a future invasion of Iraq, he told the press that his discussion with Franks focused on the Genera...
