Army?s ?War Czar?says a return to the draft is ?on the table?
2007-08-17 22:52:00 America?s “War Czar,” Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, says the draft, military conscription, remains on the table as a solution to the stress being placed on an all-volunteer army. In an interview on National Public Radio, General Lute said he is concerned about the men and women in uniform who are under extreme stress as a ...
War Czar talks about reinstating draft
2007-08-11 10:53:00 WASHINGTON — Frequent tours for U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have stressed the all-volunteer force and made it worth considering a return to a military draft, President Bush's new war adviser said Friday. "I think it makes sense to certainly consider it," Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." "And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another," Lute added in his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June We sure could use the help, but it'll never happen. First, we must remember that a draft is military service by force. I don't think the public is willing to jail college freshmen who don't want to be in the military. Second, and related to the first, the draft implies that the government is more willing to fight the war than the people. When a ...

2007-05-07 15:33:00 WASHINGTON (AP) - Now that the White House is searching for a “war czar,” it begs the question of who has been coordinating U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan the past four years. General John J. Sheehan On Why He Turned Down President Bush?s ?War Czar? O
2007-04-16 08:07:00 Eloquent, eloquent, ELOQUENT; but equally hard hitting. The condensed version of the General’s “sorry, not interested” response to the President would go something like this: “Thanks, Sir, but NOPE. You get to keep the dunce cap”: Why I Declined To Serve By John J. Sheehan Service to the nation is both a responsibility and an honor ...

Do We Need A War Czar?
2007-04-13 22:23:00 The White House has confirmed a story that first ran in the Washington Post, suggesting that the Bush Administration was looking to create a new "war czar" position. But is this new position the answer to the problems in Iraq? No. In fact, it seems to be an indictment of President Bush's handling of the situation. It is evidence that the current leadership has been unable to get a handle on the situation or does not know how to proceed. The Bush administration has suggested the position will help to organize and manage the situation, but it will only add another layer of bureaucracy to the increasingly confusing chain of command. The Bush Administration already has a new Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, on the ground and running. Gates already relies on a council of military leaders, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to help guide his position. Does the power of this new position supersede that of the Secretary of Defense? What will this war czar accomplish that shouldn't already be ta...
