Pittsburgh Sports Update
2008-04-27 16:08:00 If I wrote only a Pittsburgh sports blog, I would be required to discuss the Steelers draft. Since I don?t write a Pittsburgh sports blog, I don?t have to mention that I was surprised to see the Steelers select Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall. I would express a concern that maybe Willie Parker?s recovery from a broken right fibula is not going that well. I would write that Najeh Davenport?s career as a Pittsburgh Steeler could be over. However, I would also state that I saw Mendenhall play in several games last season and he is an explosive running back who is fun to watch. Even if Willie Parker is 100%, Mendenhall can certainly take some carries away from Parker to give him rest for the entire season and playoffs. The Parker-Mendenhall combination could be one of the best running back tandems in the NFL. Although I would have liked to have seen the Steelers draft an offensive or defensive lineman in the first or second round, the team drafted two players, Mendenhall...

John Patterson released by Washington Nationals
2008-03-20 19:15:00 The Washington Nationals have released starting pitcher John Patterson, reports the Washington Post's Nationals Journal blog. The stunning move comes only about a year after Patterson had started the opener for the team.Patterson struggled last year with nerve problems in his arm and elbow notes the Post but had vowed to come back stronger this 2008, notes the Post. Instead, his fastball velocity slowed down considerably with a spring training ERA up to 7.00. Recent speculation had the Nationals shopping Patterson for a trade but his outright release has stunned outside observers. Washington Nationals 2008 Season Preview
2008-02-17 17:19:00 (co-written with David Nichols)For fans of the Washington Nationals, the next few weeks will definitely serve to be the start of an exciting year, with the opening of the new ballpark and an infusion of talent onto the roster. The Nationals in 2007 served as sort of a surprise for fans, as they won 73 games and also beat many analysts? dire predictions as to how bad the team would be. Despite crafting a team of youngsters, journeymen and veterans, Washington defied all expectations and was a source of pride in the community. In turn, Manny Acta earned the respect not only of fans, but also the national press for taking a team that many thought had no chance and making them into a respectable unit. The Nationals? front office, led by team President Stan Kasten and General Manager Jim Bowden, have a plan in place to rebuild from within via draft picks, heavy scouting in Latin America and other countries, selective free agent signings and resourceful trading than rather than investi...

2007-12-12 02:38:00 Paul Lo Duca agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals. The deal is worth $5million. He has batted .288 with 80 homers and 466 RBIs. “I’m excited to be part of a team that’s young and has a chance to win this division,” he said. “The NL East is wide open.”

Nationals Sign Lo Duca
2007-12-11 05:13:00 UPDATE, 12-10-07 at 10:11pm: The Nationals paid a fairly hefty $5MM for Lo Duca. This is for a backstop who hit .272/.311/.378 while throwing out a below-average 23.4% of basestealers in 2007. He'd better call a good game. FROM 12-10-07 at 1:59pm: According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the Nationals have signed Paul Lo Duca to a one-year deal. He apparently wanted $5MM; I imagine he got a bit less than that. Four days ago Joel Sherman said the Blue Jays were putting the "finishing touches" on a one-year, $3MM deal with Lo Duca. My reaction: eh. I'm not sure what Lo Duca adds to the 2008 Nationals that they couldn't get elsewhere for less money. I guess they could hope he has a big first half and then try to flip him for a prospect. Mets fans: is Lo Duca good at naturing young pitchers? That could be one decent reason to sign him. showad();

Nationals Hitters To Benefit From New Park?
2007-12-11 02:01:00 I recently caught this BP Unfiltered Post from Nate Silver. He attempts to project the park factors for the new Nationals Park (soon to be renamed after some company), opening for the 2008 season. The choice quote: Basically, we?re removing one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in baseball and replacing it with what looks like it should be a neutral park. Although Nats Park is a natural-grass field located close to sea level, which always represses run-scoring a bit, its friendlier dimensions should help the Nationals score an extra 30 or so runs this year. Left-handed hitters look like they will get most of the benefit. Silver specifically notes left-handed batters getting a power boost, but really HRs will increase for both handedness types. Plenty of Nats hit for decent power in 2007: Wily Mo Pena - .504 SLG (.431 at RFK)Dmitri Young - .491 (.568 at RFK)Ryan Zimmerman - .458 (.483 at RFK)Lastings Milledge - .446 Less than decent but not horrible: Ron Bel...

Kearns Unlikely To Be Dealt
2007-12-10 17:50:00 It's hard not to like the Nationals. They have a savvy manager and something of a patchwork team. They're trying to build a club from the ground up without spending big on free agents. They're also not scared off by supposed attitude issues, acquiring players like Dmitri Young, Lastings Milledge, and Elijah Dukes. Given the Nats' desire to give Wily Mo Pena a full-time job, the team is left with four outfielders for three spots. You might think this would make Austin Kearns available. The 27 year-old hit .266/.355/.411 this year and hasn't shown much power at RFK. He makes $5MM in '08, $9MM in '09, and has a $10MM club option for '10 with a $1MM buyout. However, Kearns is unlikely to be traded according to both Jim Bowden and Manny Acta. They're happy to have four outfielders and hope to get ABs for all. It would be surprising if everyone stayed healthy all year, anyway. With his salary escalating in '09, it makes sense...

Washington Nationals Fans Are Not Happy About Elijah Dukes At All...
2007-12-04 20:21:00 As a fan in the Washington area, I see there are there a lot of people, and I mean a lot of people, that are not happy online.A good barometer of how fans feel come from wbsites and blogs, and it is almost universal that people in the Washington region give a big thumbs down to the move.It looks like Rays' fans are elated that Dukes is out of their hair; however, a lot of Nationals fans are livid and some outright fearful that he'll do something crazy.I read a lot of blogs, and besides the sordid Michael Vick affair I've not seen this much anger towards an athlete, incident or a transaction in quite a while.As a baseball move, I think the Nationals once again got a another potential boon providing Dukes can progress as a ballplayer and live up to his potential. He's only 23, blessed with great athleticism, and power; thus, if he can lay regularly, he may be an effective, if not very good player. However, he needs to be a lot more selective at the plate and be patient, but the to...

Will Andruw Take One Year?
2007-11-20 22:44:00 According to Scott Boras, his client Andruw Jones will not be taking a one-year deal to rebuild his value. Boras cites Jones' home run total, RBI total, and Gold Gloves as evidence that he deserves a marquee contract. That might work if it were 1990 and OBP, SLG, and better fielding metrics weren't standard. Is Boras losing his touch? Boras said the same thing a couple of months ago: "I wouldn't even consider a one-year contract with Andruw Jones." This was a few days after Andruw admitted he'd listen to any offer. Crasnick's article (linked in the first post) indicates that only the Nationals have expressed interest in him so far. showad();
