Eight pitchers = one win and other random thoughts
2009-06-19 18:25:00
Eight pitchers = one win Can’t beat that. I’m usually against the Jays carrying this much organizational bullpen depth (trade for a bat is my logic) but it certainly came in handy yesterday. HR City A grand total of 11 combined HR by both teams in the past two games. That was fun Back on track I’ll admit, I ...
Pirates-Nationals Notes
2009-05-22 13:55:00
Since I was in attendance, I thought I would share my observations from the Tuesday and Wednesday night games between the Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates. - While it would be nice for the Nationals to be successful one day, in the meantime, I'm going to enjoy the easy access to tickets. For the third time over the past two seasons, I arrived at the stadium without tickets only to have someone give me two tickets. Not sell me tickets, give me tickets. On Wednesday night's game, I was given tickets in the first row of section 100L (center field not far from where Nate McLouth made the game-saving catch). The normal ticket price is $30 per ticket and we even had someone in this section taking orders and bringing food and drink directly to our seats. - Speaking of servers, when my friend ordered a hot dog, our server told him a few minutes later that they were out of hot dogs and had to make them from scratch. Do the Nationals have cows somewhere in the stadium ready to b...

* Ashley Diparlo and Becky Emmers of WTAE's Pittsburgh Channel website are awesome. They are even more awesome for including the Best Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament on their Links N'@ video. This is the first time Sean's Ramblings has ever made a video, even though my blog name was not officially mentioned. * Prior to its tour starting on Sunday in Pittsburgh (and I'll see them in DC in a few weeks), the Post-Gazette caught up with Fleetwood Mac in a fairly in-depth preview. The money quotes:"It's exciting to us," Nicks says, "because we're not trying to shove new songs down people's throats."Plus, Christine McVie is not on tour:"Christine had been keeping big secrets from us all the many years. She was afraid to fly. Because she's such a tough old bird, she never let us know."* Sports Illustrated wrote that the Pirates could surprise with the young talent. (h/t Bluey Blog). * Speaking of hopeful things that probably won't happen, Metro will make it to Reston by 2013...

Willie's Second Chance -- The Washington Nationals?
2008-10-18 07:09:00
I read this online last night from 'We've Got Heart' - a Washington Nationals blog - and needless to say, I was surprised. From the Baltimore Sun: The Washington Nationals are interested in adding former New York Mets manager Willie Randolph to their coaching staff, Newsday reported. Washington, which fired five of its coaches after going 59-102 this season, would like Randolph to serve as a bench coach or thirdbase coach under Manny Acta, who served as Randolph's thirdbase coach with the Mets in 2005 and 2006. The Mets fired Randolph this season.Interesting ? I would not think Randolph would come to Washington just for the sake of having a job ? however, the impact he could have with the Nationals could be profound. A proven winner, a multiple time champion, respected throughout the game (he got a raw deal in NYC, IMO).But would he coming to Washington be contingent on let's say -- a managing job -- if the Nationals come off the tracks like they did in 2008?I?d think he?d want ...

The short story is that I bought four $18 tickets on StubHub for less than $7 each. While waiting for friends at the stadium, someone handed my brother two free tickets. Ten minutes later, another guy gave us three free tickets. This is a brand new stadium and people are giving a...

Pittsburgh Sports Update
2008-04-27 16:08:00
If I wrote only a Pittsburgh sports blog, I would be required to discuss the Steelers draft. Since I don?t write a Pittsburgh sports blog, I don?t have to mention that I was surprised to see the Steelers select Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall. I would express a concern that maybe Willie Parker?s recovery from a broken right fibula is not going that well. I would write that Najeh Davenport?s career as a Pittsburgh Steeler could be over. However, I would also state that I saw Mendenhall play in several games last season and he is an explosive running back who is fun to watch. Even if Willie Parker is 100%, Mendenhall can certainly take some carries away from Parker to give him rest for the entire season and playoffs. The Parker-Mendenhall combination could be one of the best running back tandems in the NFL. Although I would have liked to have seen the Steelers draft an offensive or defensive lineman in the first or second round, the team drafted two players, Mendenhall...

John Patterson released by Washington Nationals
2008-03-20 19:15:00
The Washington Nationals have released starting pitcher John Patterson, reports the Washington Post's Nationals Journal blog. The stunning move comes only about a year after Patterson had started the opener for the team.Patterson struggled last year with nerve problems in his arm and elbow notes the Post but had vowed to come back stronger this 2008, notes the Post. Instead, his fastball velocity slowed down considerably with a spring training ERA up to 7.00. Recent speculation had the Nationals shopping Patterson for a trade but his outright release has stunned outside observers. I'll begin this analysis the way I always do: Chad Cordero is a good but not great closer, will probably get traded at midseason and end up in middle relief for a contender, but is worthy of drafting as your number two closer. Washington Nationals 2008 Season Preview
2008-02-17 17:19:00
(co-written with David Nichols)For fans of the Washington Nationals, the next few weeks will definitely serve to be the start of an exciting year, with the opening of the new ballpark and an infusion of talent onto the roster. The Nationals in 2007 served as sort of a surprise for fans, as they won 73 games and also beat many analysts? dire predictions as to how bad the team would be. Despite crafting a team of youngsters, journeymen and veterans, Washington defied all expectations and was a source of pride in the community. In turn, Manny Acta earned the respect not only of fans, but also the national press for taking a team that many thought had no chance and making them into a respectable unit. The Nationals? front office, led by team President Stan Kasten and General Manager Jim Bowden, have a plan in place to rebuild from within via draft picks, heavy scouting in Latin America and other countries, selective free agent signings and resourceful trading than rather than investi...
Washington Nationals radio to be based in Maryland
2008-02-16 15:11:00
The Washington Nationals have arranged for this year's pregame and postgame radio shows to be hosted by a hotel complex in Maryland. BallparkGuys.com reports that the Nationals reached a deal with the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center, part of the new National Harbor complex in Oxon Hill, to host their radio programming. The arrangement seems likely to infuriate politicians and citizens in the District of Columbia whose city tax money has gone out to help support the team and its new Nationals Park baseball stadium.Relevant link: BallparkGuys.com

The Year in Review -- the Washington Nationals
2007-12-17 07:00:00
Normally, we would say we look at "what went right, what went wrong..." and so on, but not a whole heck of a lot went right for the Nats, so we mention the two or three things that went right, the plenty of things that went wrong, and more as we break down the 2007 Nationals.
Washington Nationals Signs Paul Lo Duca
2007-12-12 02:38:00
Paul Lo Duca agreed to a one-year deal with the Washington Nationals. The deal is worth $5million. He has batted .288 with 80 homers and 466 RBIs. “I’m excited to be part of a team that’s young and has a chance to win this division,” he said. “The NL East is wide open.”
Nationals Sign Lo Duca
2007-12-11 05:13:00
UPDATE, 12-10-07 at 10:11pm: The Nationals paid a fairly hefty $5MM for Lo Duca. This is for a backstop who hit .272/.311/.378 while throwing out a below-average 23.4% of basestealers in 2007.  He'd better call a good game. FROM 12-10-07 at 1:59pm: According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the Nationals have signed Paul Lo Duca to a one-year deal.  He apparently wanted $5MM; I imagine he got a bit less than that.  Four days ago Joel Sherman said the Blue Jays were putting the "finishing touches" on a one-year, $3MM deal with Lo Duca. My reaction: eh.  I'm not sure what Lo Duca adds to the 2008 Nationals that they couldn't get elsewhere for less money.  I guess they could hope he has a big first half and then try to flip him for a prospect.  Mets fans: is Lo Duca good at naturing young pitchers?  That could be one decent reason to sign him. showad();
Nationals Hitters To Benefit From New Park?
2007-12-11 02:01:00
I recently caught this BP Unfiltered Post from Nate Silver.  He attempts to project the park factors for the new Nationals Park (soon to be renamed after some company), opening for the 2008 season.  The choice quote: Basically, we?re removing one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in baseball and replacing it with what looks like it should be a neutral park. Although Nats Park is a natural-grass field located close to sea level, which always represses run-scoring a bit, its friendlier dimensions should help the Nationals score an extra 30 or so runs this year. Left-handed hitters look like they will get most of the benefit.  Silver specifically notes left-handed batters getting a power boost, but really HRs will increase for both handedness types.  Plenty of Nats hit for decent power in 2007: Wily Mo Pena - .504 SLG (.431 at RFK)Dmitri Young - .491 (.568 at RFK)Ryan Zimmerman - .458 (.483 at RFK)Lastings Milledge - .446 Less than decent but not horrible: Ron Bel...
